Memorial School has an exceptional teaching staff with excellent teacher-student ratios. Current principal, Donna Calabrese warmly learns each student by name and is highly visible to parents during daily dismissals. Our family has joined many other parents during Family Math Night, Book Fairs, Family Zumba Day, Field Day. We love that Memorial School encourages parent involvement and civic engagement. Memorial kids just enjoy being kids: they aren't concerned about wearing the "right brand" of shoes, jeans. It's not a rat-race to impress or fit in. That's a huge reason why we've never encountered bullying at Memorial. Our kids are very excited about joining the new Walking Club at school, promoting health and fitness outside P.E.. Unlike other West Springfield Schools, 1st-4th grade Memorial kids get to take Music and Art classes weekly, year-round. There is an in-house, very affordable after-school program with a snack and homework help given by classroom teachers. It's wonderful to be able to give your child a chance to join a fun after school program that offers Lego Robotics without sacrificing his homework or grades. I speak to you as a parent who has put 4 children through Memorial School. I recommend this school and encourage you to meet the staff.

Develops respect: Strongly agree

I noticed a huge development in my children come their 4th grade year. They were more respectful listeners, they chose their words more carefully. Their teachers were speaking to them in calm, quiet tones and my kids mirrored that. Remember when your kids are yanking on your leg, interrupting phone calls with, "Look at me! Look at me!!"? Yep, that stopped happening. They respect turns and opinions now. I was floored.

Develops empathy: Strongly agree

Memorial School definitely fosters compassion, caring and empathy with its students. Each year, the 5th graders work on a special service project that helps them understand how to act on these qualities and become empathetic young people.

Develops honesty: Strongly agree

I've witnessed a student being held accountable to Memorial's standards of honesty. There was no public humiliation, shaming. The student was required to tell the truth, understand her wrongdoing, accept consequences which included a heartfelt apology. As a parent in this situation, I don't think that I would have done anything differently.

Memorial School provided a solid scholastic foundation for all four of our children. This diverse school exemplifies teaching at its best. Children are exposed to many different cultures of people, as well as diverse learners. Each of my children have gone on to higher schools of education and I know that their exposure to great teaching were the basis of their success. We are truly indebted to all of the staff at this school for their dedication to our children's educational experience.
