No school is perfect. . .and that's why I LOVE Shepherd of the Lakes. At SOTL God's grace is understood and shared. I had the recent experience of observing a class prepare for the end of the day. The students gathered what they needed, packed their bags, and then together the students and teacher sang the song every child at SOTL learns in chapel, "Father bless us as we go, Jesus walk beside us, Holy Spirit guide us." Those students leave, daily, knowing that they have a God who loves them, walks with them, and guides them. That is priceless. Thankful!

Our child has been in of Shepherd of the Lakes School for 7 years! Our child has grown into such a well rounded person in great part because of this school. Every single teacher, including the Specials, and Pastors have been extremely supportive of our child and family. Their doors are always open! The children have a unique bond with each other and at any given moment will pray for one another! We love that our child can ask questions about God and get a well educated Christian response. Our entire family have made lasting friendships through the school too! We could not say enough wonderful things about Shepherd of the Lakes!

Our family is blessed by loving staff, knowledgeable and loving teachers, and a wonderful environment that is Christ centered in their approach to education. My kids learn the necessary facts in school but they also learn about God's love for them.

My children have attended this school for 3 years and will continue! The school staff and teachers are kind and are supportive not only to the children but the parents as well! There is no doubt that the best interests of the children are always at the forefront of every decision and event. The church staff and congregation is filled with families who are united in one mission to transform homes through God's grace! We are blessed to be a part of this Christ centered environment!

My family has loved being a part of this school. The teachers are wonderfully responsive. My kids achieve at a level consistent with their abilities. There is wonderful support from the church leadership. Many parents volunteer a great deal. It has been fun to watch the school grow so dramatically over the last few years.

This is a great school. The children are cared for amazingly. There is great support from the church. We have been here four years and will continue with all of our kids through eighth grade. The school has doubled in size over the last few years, many new programs have started, we have expanded grades, and the church just decided to expand facilities. We are blessed!

This is our first year at SOTL and each one of our three children are thriving. This school is strong on academics and parental involvement. Our children have enjoyed the extra-curricular activities such as math club, boys and girl scouts, and running club. Small class size allows more attention to students. What stands out most is the encouragement our children receive in their faith in Christ. This runs through every facet of their school experience; the greatest of which is the teachers' modeling of Christ's love. My children range from easy-going to difficult. It does not depend on the child. Students learn this love and have grown to care and pray for one another. We are not Lutheran, but it has never been an issue. Lastly, I want to commend the staff for their patience and care. Mrs. Gaertner, Principal VanDeven and school secretary Mrs. Horst have gladly answered our many new-parent questions and always greet us with a smile. We have re-enrolled and look forward to next year.

Our family appreciates this school. Our kids are lovingly cared for by their teachers. We find the teachers to be responsive to our questions and they earnestly desire the best for our children. The academic environment is strong and respectful of the different learning styles of children. The administration and the teachers work together to create successful learning environments. The Christian environment is expressed in many ways, including room for kids and parents to make mistakes and find forgiveness and reconciliation. Our children have been attending this school for the last five years and they will continue in this school.

We were told such wonderful things about the school when we toured, we were sold and enrolled pour children. We refer to it as our biggest mistake ever. We have contemplated leaving early so many times, ultimately we will never come back. The teachers are okay but ultimately they all solely care about image. We will warn everyone who ask about SOTL to run!!! Worst place ever! The principle is so rude, unprofessional and pain hurtful. She has made numerous parents cry! A grown woman. The principle makes some feel completely unwelcome. Don't hint that you looking at other schools she will ignore you completely...won't even look you in the eyes. Awful school. The administration and Senior pastor are terrible. They try to justify their behavior by saying that everyone sends but the truth is you would not expect treatment like this anywhere in the world a public school would treat you so much better and be so much more Christian then this school. Run! Definitely look at another Lutheran school. I would wish this school on anyone. No one should pay so much money to be treated so terribly. Sad place.

I agree that there are pros and cons with every school. What troubles me is that the staff reached out to several of us whom they knew would write good reviews to ask us to post on Great Schools, and they had negative reviews removed. Is that Christian? Hiding opinions? Anyone considering this school should ask one question: how many current families have re-enrolled for next year? It will tell you a lot. I feel like the administration strongly bent the facts when they convinced us to enroll at SOTL.

My children have attended Shepherd of the Lakes for 5 years, and we love it! The academics are great, and my children are so happy to be able to talk about Jesus in school. The staff, from the aides to the teachers and the principal, truly care for and are concerned about the students. Problems are approached from a biblical standpoint. We, as parents, are glad to know that what we teach at home is being reinforced at school. We would never consider sending our children anywhere else!

In response to the poster who questioned the reviews: I believe the one review that was removed by the moderator of this site was taken down because it contained inaccurate information. The school cannot remove comments on its own. You are right - there are pros and cons with every school. Each parent has to decide what is important to them. For our family, it is a great curriculum combined with a Christian education, and we are pleased with what we have received at SOTL so far. Our children have tested above grade level in math, science and reading. They know that being a Christian means that we are not perfect or better than anyone else. We make mistakes and sin, and that is why we need God's grace. If you want a quality, Christ centered education, I would highly recommend SOTL.

Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran School is an exceptional academic facility. My Kindergartener is already reading at a first grade level. My daughters love going to school, in fact, they never want to leave. This school has everything: Spanish, music, art, math club, girl scouts, fantastic teachers and a fabulous principal.

I love SOTL. I have two children there and would never consider moving them somewhere else. They talk about Jesus everyday and are challenged daily. The teachers are accessible and if you need to speak to the principal you can anytime. If your looking for a great school I highly suggest going to visit SOTL.

We have been going to SOTL for 4 years and plan on doing so all the way through the 8th grade. The class size is small, the education is OUTSTANDING! Best of all they learn about God! The staff if loving and caring to every child. The families are so welcoming and friendly! The school is growing by leaps and bounds thanks to an amazing principal and staff. They offer many after school activities and clubs. As well as Gym, Technology, Music, and Spanish. They do not have a gymnasium yet but are planning on it in the future. My 3 children love it at SOTL and can't imagine ever leaving!

We have 3 children in this school. We have been a part of this school for the past 8 years and have seen it improve in staff leadership, academic excellence, a sense of teamwork between staff and parents and enrollment. My children have always been challenged academically. Due to the small class sizes, I feel confident that my children will not be overlooked academically or socially. SOTL shares Jesus' love with it's students everyday. I LOVE this! The school is not perfect, but no school is. I could never imagine leaving this loving community!

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
