Scranton utilizes social and academic aspects fairly well, although the staff-student relationship is very poor. The teachers do not emphasize discipline in everyday work at all, which makes up a fairly poor learning environment, depending on the student. It can be very hard to concentrate in class when your peers and teachers do not support a hard working environment. The new 2011-2012 grading system is atrocious as well, because it poorly correlates with their online grading system. Overall, it is a pretty fun experience, other than the fact that the school poorly manages its academic structure. I am somewhat disappointed.
I have had both my daughters attend Scraton.onin the past two years. One needed some special ed support the other did not. Both of them did not get the support needed from the school. The class rooms were to large to get the help needed, the teachers are over worked with so many kids that they don't have the time to spend on any one child. We ended up taking them both out in the middle of the school year to attend a different a school.
Scranton Middle School has great teachers and extracurricular activities. You have fun but still learn a lot.
We moved into the district 2 years ago. We were told the district was going to be a good school, not the best but good. Upon moving, we found the schools to be a complete disappointment. The entire district is the problem here. If your child needs special services from this district, good luck. Their educational structure is poor, teachers are inconsistent in their ethics, policies, and are unprofessional.
As a new parent entering the Brighton School System, I have to say I was greatly impressed with the reception my daughter and us as parents received. We are doing school of choice and have many schools from which to choose and by far Scranton with the many different extra curricular activities from which to choose. Along with the core studies. We are very excited to be a part of this school and look forward to a successful year.
Scranton is a great school great academic qualities. and extracurricular activities
Scranton Middle School was such a disappointment. During my son's 3 years there he had three different principals. The quality of the teachers is all over the board. Some actually taking their union business right into the classroom. A number of teachers are very good while others are horrible and should not be in the classroom. The discipline is capricious and enforced inconsistantly. I would avoid the district all together if you are considering a move. The per pupil funding is ranked among the lowest in the state, while the teachers are paid 53rd best in the state. The teachers have no contract and the climate is less than positive.
The staff at Scranton gave my children excellent attention and extra help, after school and on their own lunch times. It is true that the office staff is unfriendly at times, but that is not the reason we send our kids to school. The administration deals with difficult kids carefully and with compassion. I found creative and interesting programs throughout my two daughter's stay there. They went to high school and college and did very well. They consider their years at Scranton to be among their best, even though middle school years were hard for them, as they often are for many kids. I love this school! Parents are involved and supportive and I was impressed with the professional treatment given to kids and parents.
We are extremely dissatsfied with SMS. The office staff are unfriendly, the discipline policy does not work, the school refused to provide a Section 504 plan even though it's required. The teachers are uneven in quality, some excellent and some atrocious. Administrators simply don't care about all of the students. We moved our child to an alternative school where 90% of the kids who attend come from Scranton. You would think this would send a message to the district and the administration. The facility is nice and the extracurriculars are good, but that's not why I send my kids to school. Bottom line the quality of education there is not what Brighton says it strives to provide.
