At first, I wasnt to excited about sending my daughter to a detroit public school as this being her first time attending school. But I love my daugthers teacher Mrs. Walker she is the best and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I'm have to say that there are some good Detroit public schools still out there just keep looking and give them a try. My daugther will be in first grade next year and I will continue to send her there until we move or she can't go there any more...

The principal has done a 360 degree turn around with this school. When my oldest son (who's now 17) attended the school, it was literally off the hook. When I would volunteer in the classrooms, the teachers would spend 15 to 30 minutes (no lie) getting the students quite. I always questioned why his reading was so poor & found it was because phonics were not being taught. Now, my 7 & 8 yr old attend and they are just blossoming. I am so pleased with what Mrs. Hughes-Norde has done. They use a SRA reading model and they've gotten a handle on classroom behaviour. When I walk into the school, it's quite.

I love John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy. Their academic programs give the children the skills they need to prepare them for the next level. The music and art activities gives them a chance to expose their talents. The parent level makes me feel like my kids are safe and in good hands.

I personally think the school is a great academic learning environment. The teacher give great attention to each students need. They have agreat music, dance, and choir activities. I didn't want to take my middle school age child out. If they went up to eighth grade my child would still be there. It's an overall great elementary school to send your child to.

I have two children who attend John R. King and I can say that they have a great time learning and being challenged with academic as well as extra-curricular activities. Mrs. Hughes is an excellent principal who goes out of her way on many occasions to ensure the children's well-being. Mrs. Smith, the communities-in-schools director, goes above and beyond to help the students and parents have great experiences in learning and the arts. Mrs. Stokes has implemented the UAW after-school programs which enhance the children's interest in several areas from science to rollerblading! Mrs. Jackson, a parent, who leads the LSCO, also helps to give parents a heads up on what's going on in our district and what we can do to help. All in all, the teacher's offer much of themselves everyday and the staff is like family for my children. My kids love John R. King! Anjela Moore

As a parent of 3 J.R. King Academic and Peforming Arts Academy students I am very pleased with the education I feel my children are receiving at this school. The skillman foundation has named this school as a good school and they are working to become a geat school. They have a wonderful principal in Ms. Hughes and Mrs. Stokes is moving the school forward with her initiation of the UAW program and Afterschool programs. The school deserves more recognition for the attention placed on education and arts. They have wonderful motivated teachers from the pre-school and up. This year the school has even added a 6th grade curriculum. I feel proud to say my children attend this school and that it is a Detroit Public School. I think with continued effort by the parents, students, and staff this school will excel beyond our wildest dreams. Go J. R. King!

As a community activist I have been invited to the Christmas concerts and the Career Day events for four years. J R King is a jewel. The principal insists on top notch staff for her students. Whenever I have visited the students greeted me at the door then guided me to the appropriate room rather than vaguely point out where I should go. The performances of the students are first rate. If I had children and wanted the next best thing to private school, I'd pick J R King Elementary School.
