Alcona High's the School that makes me proud to be a member of her loyal crowd. Yes Alcona has had some of the greatest teachers, staff, environment and fellow students, who care one for the others. My chemistry teacher had a Masters in Chemistry. My football coach had played college football and was briefly in the NFL. Our vocal music teacher taught us so that we got all 1s (highest scores). The Marching Band performed all over the state. The basketball team was in the playoffs. The rules were fairly and equally enforced. We had many in my class that went on to college and like myself graduated. It is safe! None of the student athletes (when I was there and playing) were on drugs and the few that were drinkers were careful not to get caught and did not abuse alcohol on a regular basis (no I did not drink). Our teachers came to our dances. Our parents would trade off being chaperones and come to some dances. We had a state champion in track in the 440. Wow as I think back, I wish was a kid again, back in Michigan at old Alcona High.
My 4 children as well as myself attended and graduated from Alcona Schools.I try to maintain a connection so that I may keep a finger on the pulse of the school and from my perspective we have a very good school system K thru 12.As we all struggle through these trying times it is comforting to know that our hard earned tax dollars are being wisely spent.
This school cares about its students so much! And the band director is doing great things with the music program despite low funding.
from personal experience at the school it had by far one of the best staff and teaching methods
The teacing staff and principal are among the best I have encountered. The school provides a safe and appropriate environment for learning. Although the school has suffered a bit due to the lousy Michigan economy, they have managed to maintain high standards.
Many schools are struggling with the state mandates on curriculum and making sure every student has the opportunity to succeed. Alcona has a couple of really unique programs where students can actually learn business skills and meet the state expectations at the same time. Expectations are high at Alcona. The ACT is a test; that is all. It used to be that the ACT was an option and that students could retake it if they chose to. Like all new educational mandates, the school is trying to get their curriculum alligned. My child loves the school but there are high expectations. She doesn't get all A's but she has to work hard for what she does get. The principal is one of the best I have seen.
They are very ineffective in the way their curriculumn is set up. My son couldnt even get a decent score on his ACT and he is an all A student.
I'm actually an alumni of AHS, it was a great school and i appreciate it even more now that i am not in the area and have seen other schools around Michigan, one of the better Community Schools there is
I think alcona is a wonderful school with a great caring and loving staff. Everyone is always eager to help and I am proud to be a part of our school.
