Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The school looks good on paper. However, test scores can be deceiving. As a parent, I believe our teens' emotional safety and security are just as important as high test scores. I don't believe they are doing enough about the amount of bullying happening within the school. If you search the internet, a story was reported by Click on Detroit, January 14, 2014. Just recently, the Northville Record published another incident October 23, 2014. A few families were brave enough to share their stories. However, others remain silent for fear of retaliation. Very sad situation.

The new principal Mr. Koski is terrible. He is fake and doesn't care about the needs of the students.

Northville has prepared my children for success. They have had strong academic success, been involved in extracurricular activities which built character and teamwork ( especially cross country under Coach Cronin) honor society and band. They have fabulous friends with strong values and class. My oldest completed first semester of college with a 4.0 and has a solid internship this summer. I have to credit NHS with a solid education and the offering of many honors and AP classes. Northville is a great town, school and community! Proud to call it home.

NHS has treated it's population of Special Ed. students, my son included, with an astounding level of disrespect. Parents have been dismissed when expressing concerns, including by the school board and supt. We moved to Northville because of the reputation of the district. They are great if you have a good student, but don't let your child's needs get in the way of the standardized test scores. This school year has been an absolute nightmare with the district contiuing to mishandle situations without apology. I am truly disappointed.

Northville high school only offer very limited math and science competitions, not even comparable to Novi high. The teachers do not have enough time to write recommendation letter to good students. The new ALPS entrance exam for elementary students is more or less like a joke, the test is not even timed. It is not a good way to select gifted kids.

Academically the school is good, the seminar period is great for the students. My only dislike is that the school doesn't handle conflicts between students well. They seem to let somethings go to far, instead of sitting down with both parents and students and resolving the problem.

The math and science curriculum is not very good; however, the English department has many qualified teachers, and the school offers many AP classes. The technology in the school is out-of-date, but the district does not have any money to replace the computers or TVs. Many current teachers are now also under stress from having so many classes to teach, almost all of which contain more than thirty students, after there have been so many lay-offs. This affects their teaching, as they seem to be less about their job.

Of, course, parents are the number-one ingredient in making a successful student, and our child had actively involved parents, as did all of her large group of friends. From kindergarten through graduation from Northville High School (and yes, there were a couple of bad teachers along the way...but we worked around them, talked to them, got outside tutoring, etc.) the teachers and administrators of Northville were outstanding. The English faculty at the H.S. is especially stellar. Every one of a very large group of friends is now a college grad, most with advanced professional degrees, and gainfully employed. Northville Schools gave them the base, and is still the focus of many happy memories. I am an educator myself (in another district) and I see the difference, very clearly. I am happy to have lived in a community that understands what a good education really is and supports the delivery of that experience.

NHS is a great school. I have had one son graduate from here with a 3.9 GPA, and currently two daughters in grades 10 and 12, both whom have just gotten 4.0's. I am very much pleased with the teachers and administration of this school and how they have worked with all three of my children.

This school offers everything that a student needs to be successful. I have had 2 kids go thru this system and could't be happier. The grauation rate and the colleges that the students are accepted to should be proof to anyone that Northville is a first class school. Extra curricular activities are extensive and top notch.

I've had three children pass through the halls of NHS. I have come to know many of the teachers and administrators over the past eight years and am overall pleased with the school.

I think that NHS is a great school, sertainley better than Novi. Everyone if they put the effort forth can get good grades. The teachers are very accesible and they truly care about the students. The choirs are amazing and the curriculums are challenging and require time and effort, but they aren't impossible.

I tried talking to them many times about my child skipping, and they didn't do nor did they care at all about it. There are way too many kids and the curriculum is really strict to the point where most kids just end up getting by.

The math program is not the greatest, but there are many exceptional qualities to this school. First off, the seminar period is an amazing asset to most students for who many need extra help in a class or to make up a test but do not have time before or after school. The block scheduling is nicely laid out and applied well. The longer class periods greatly help with science labs and tests. I personally find the block scheduling helps me to be less stressed with homework as I have at least two days to complete it and during the time I am able to ask my teacher during seminar for help if necessary. Second, there are the great music programs. The choir and band programs are quiet large, with 1 in 4 students in choir.

The availability and quality of art and music classes are astounding! Whereas many schools are doing away with the art department, Northville's is strong and offers classes not found at many other schools. The curriculum is strong and more than adequately prepares students for college. Teachers are available and supportive.

The academics are not at the quality level of Birmingham/Bloomfield particularly with the Science and Math curriculums. English programs are good overall. District is overrated, but has a really nice extravagant building. School Board and Superintendent are ditrict's cheerleaders, but there are still problems that some parents choose to ignore. Maybe a little too affluent, look at parking lot on any given day. It is a decent school, but has a way to go. Many successful students just have really successful parents who care.

Outstanding schools. Recruiters from colleges now rate Northville High School #1 public HS in State of MI - Northville sent over 45 kids to U-M alone from last year's class. Great facilty, high parent involvement, great programs.

Reasonably decent academics. Students generally succeed after graduation not because of the education but rather that the community is relatively affluent. Assistant Principal role has historically been filled by disciplinarian-types.
