Good programs music, sports and special education. Good communication with teachers, principal and active parent committee. Great school. In previous years parents weren't as active, just depending on the parents and how busy they can be with work. Teachers and principal are very helpful and stay in communication with me regarding my children at the school (two of the three are special education needs) AND good transition from middle school to high school. My kids went to Royal Oak Middle school and the transition was seemless. Good teachers, Good principal, and good special education teams to work on IEP and get state funding to help my kids out. Looking for a good school i recommend this place. I am a care-giver for my sister's kids after she passed away of cancer, so i am going to mark myself as "OTHER"
While the teachers are exceptional, my experience at ROHS was a painful one. The administration does nothing to support students or staff, and the underlying tension is difficult to ignore. I would seriously consider looking elsewhere. I am an honors student as well, and would have really appreciated more class options, smaller class sizes and just a more genuine atmosphere. This school is run as a business, not a learning environment.
I am a student here and I could not ask for a better high school experience. There are so many opportunities to get involved in many different clubs an activities. All the students in my classes are extremely nice and willing to help anyone. All of my teachers are also extremely nice and understand all of their students busy lives, while still pressuring us to excell in all academic areas. However, I am in honors classes so I cannot speak on behalf of other classes.
The post made on February 10,2011. Five stars for you. I agree totally. I think some parents don't get it you have to be involved in your child's education experience and stop blaming the school teachers and staff are not thier to babysit your highschooler but to instruct your child if your child needs help it's thier responsibility to ask questions. Allow your child to get involved. Sports can be costly try band, orcherstra, community service or working part-time so they won't be idle. As a parent join the PTA, volunteer that will show others and your child you care about the school and your child's education and well being. If education is a struggle for your child contact the school counselor or set up a meeting with the instructor and principal. Moving to this community soon. I'm exspecting great things.
Royal Oak high was so much nicer when I went there. It's a joke now. Not even worth considering. I really wish I could send my son to a different school.
My daughter is a senior at this school and I am i the process of looking for her another school. The harassment that is accepted and tolerated by the staff is unreal. I wouldn't recommend anyone let their child go to this school.
My kid came to this school from hazel park, Unfortunately that was a big mistake on my part. Too many students in this school end up in jail. Her grades have dropped from B's and C's to D's and E's this year because the school is not taking responsibility for providing these kids a good education. The lunch program is a joke, we pay full price for lunch and it's very expensive compared to HP. Plus they went to extremes taking the "unhealthy" foods out of the school - according to my daughter most of the food is gross and tastes like cardboard because they're too concerned about no trans fats and no oils and no sugar.. My advice is to just steer clear of this school. My concern is for the happiness and academic achievements of my daughter, both of which ROHS fails to fulfill.
I currently have two kids at Royal Oak High, a senior and a freshman. We've had a very positive experience at the school and give it a high recomendation! The academics are excellent, lots of opportunities for honors and AP course work as well as programs for those with learning disabilities and everything in between. There is a lot of great school spirit in the form of sports, clubs, performing arts, positive after school activities and charitable fundraising opportunities. My boys say fights and drug issues are minimal, not the norm. Honestly, I believe whatever does go on is typical of any highschool or place where there is a high concentration of teens searching for their identity. If you're an involved parent/family/student you can have great experience at Royal Oak High. I have to wonder at the couple of negative reviews I've seen if any of the writers got involved in positive things around the school or if they were more apt to sit back and hope that someone else was going to make things positive for them. Getting involved and having a sense of ownership and pride in your school translates to good things happening and a positive experience!
The academic side of the school i sfine, but there is a culture of bullying that is tolerated by the administration and staff. I am a graduate of the school from before it was consolidated with Dondero, and that culture has persisted since the 90s. There is also quite a bit of racial/soico-economic strife there now due to the consolidation with Dondero.
My children have attended Royal Oak Schools for the last six years and I wouldn't consider moving them to any other district. The service they receive is wonderful. One is very advanced and there are multiple opportunities for growth and challenge. One performs more in the normal range and loves school and is truly engaged which is a blessing since she is sooooo socially oriented. I have the option of my children attending Groves High School (ranked number 2 in the state) and choose to keep them in Royal Oak. Well done!
Our experience with Royal Oak High School has been overwhelmingly negative. From the point of registration where no staff was available, to long waits for class schedules, locker assignments, building tour and textbooks. Administrators appear to be unconcerned and unavailable. Failure to provide basic services in a timely and professional manner are a reflection of the quality of education offered at Royal Oak High School. The only positive are the teachers. Two thumbs way down for Royal Oak High School
We have Challenge Day & the Reaching Higher program! Our school is committed to a good learning environment where diversity is accepted.
Royal Oak High School is wonderful. The teachers are attentive, dedicated, well-qualified and really care about the students. The administration is proactive and puts community awareness, health and wellness, high quality education that meets student needs as their top priority. My daughter has attended for a few years now and has worked hard to earn her high grades and has learned a lot. The music, drama, and Model UN programs are also exceptional. I can't say enough. I won't put my children anywhere else.
Royal Oak High School is terrible. Regardless of whether I attended Dondero or Kimball my freshman year, my sophomore and junior years have been a nightmare. The school has been under constant construction, although little has been accomplished and ROMS puts the high school to shame. I've even had a teacher who spread gossip about other teachers, the administration and students. On the plus side, at least we have ceilings and tiles on the floor now...
Currently attending R.O. High. It was a tough transition, especially for the kids from Dondero having to be displaced, but things have turned out great. The school is still under renovation, but never are classes disrupted. I really love going to school there, and the teachers and other staff made the transition extremely smooth.
Was pleasantly surprised with the consolidation, the students had less problems than anticipated! But the amount of students, fights and drugs is overwhelming! The teachers are wonderful and to be admired!
I love the school and the environment. The curriculum is vigerous and the students kep upwell. The performing arts program is phenominal and score great ratings at various festivals. This school is absolutely wonderful
Great School. It has alot to offer. the performing arts program is very great and show it in their ratings at varioius festival. The new band level is astounding. The teachers are phenominal in every subject. the curriculum is diffiicult but the students meet these challenges.
I think that this school is terrible. The carpets in the hallways are duct taped down, the stalls in the bathrooms either have no doors or the doors have no lock and the stalls are vandalized, the windows are duct taped in the winter to keep the cold out. It is just a terrible school overall. Not just the appearence, but the attitude of some of the students and teachers. A lot of the teachers are rude and have no respect for the students. My child came home crying from being harrassed and nothing was done about it, even after the fact that I called the school. There is no discipline. I would recommend you to send your child to another school. This school is terrible.
