My A/B student son went to this school for about a year and a half. He was unhappy at the regular public school socially and this school was supposed to be more technology based and that appealed to him. First off, I was disappointed in his, for a lack of a better term for it, home-room teacher in that this man could not even speak proper English, his grammar was terrible and I wondered how he became a licensed teacher. Next, this school is project based and is only for kids who are SEL DIRECTED, student spend much of their time working on their own, this was not a good fit for my son who ended up not doing his work and clearly needed more structure, he dropped to a C/D student. Next, I found that this school became a dumping ground for students that were failing in the regular public school district, these students can be a drag on other students bring them down which seemed to happen more in this school because of the "self directed" nature of the learning. This school will only be a good fit for the student who cane tune out the negativity around and who is highly intrinsically motivated to work.
Scores are failing in all subjects on tests. What is the time being spent on if students are not doing well on the basics. It doesn't matter how well behaved they are if they are not being educated.
New Century in Hutchinson is a project based learning academy where core subjects are presented in real world applications and students are challenged to think outside the box. This is not a school for kids who don't govern their own behavior. Students are expected to self mediate and pace their learning. It's a great school for creative kids who can organize their time on their own terms while producing higher level critical thinking presentations.
I graduated from New Century Charter School as a "Charter Starter", I went on to study for my Bachelors Degree in Culinary Management and I am now traveling through Germany working hard and enjoying life! I'm very thankful to my High school, in my 5 years at the Charter School I grew confidence, knowledge and I made friends not only with other students, but also with the amazing staff. If you are looking for a change of pace from the norm I do recommend visiting and/or transferring to this awesome school!
