Cotter is an excellent school. The culture and atmosphere at Cotter is what seperates it from the public school system in Winona. Students learn integrity and honesty, in addition to solid academic programs. There are no locks on the lockers at Cotter because students wouldn't steal from one another. The international students at Cotter add a cultural aspect that is lacking in the public schools. My son interacts with international students in classes, athletics and other extracurricular activities. Cotter students are required to take a religion class every day for all years at Cotter. Cotter is also a good value when compared with other other private schools. All graduating students receive a four year scholarship toward college (average is about $1,500 per year for four years). This is essentially a 25-30% refund in the tuition. The Cotter high school prepares all students for college because all students take a college preparatory curriclum. There are not watered-down classes for students who are not acadmeically motivated. Overall, Cotter is a great place.

Cotter's academics are absolutely no better than the Winona Senior High's. Especially when one considers the enormous tuition that parents are paying for. The arts department, aside from the fantastic band, lacks considerably to the Winona Senior High. The band department is certainly Cotter's crown jewel. The athletic offering is a moot point, since a student attending Cotter can participate at the WSHS. However, Cotter's athletic program contains exceptional coaches and the small numbers allow for more playing time and development, which certainly allows them to excel. Amidst declining enrollment, Cotter has relied on international students in the last several years to continue operating. One would think this would provide for an amazing cultural atmosphere, but in fact, this has caused a definite split in the student body. It doesn't take a person long to walk through the halls and see the disconnect between the students. If you are looking for Catholic teaching, it is available. However, if you are expecting your student to attend a weekly mass as you might think, it does not happen more than a few times a year.
