Small school where the students and faculty all get to know one another, which is rare these days. I feel like the students are focused on learning and the teachers work well with one another. I do wish they would rely on email more, instead of sending a backpack full of notes home. An email every week from the teacher and another from the school would really increase parental knowledge about what's happening. Looking forward to the new principal and his ideas.
Lakewood is better than most in NKC, nice in that it is a very small school. As a parent, you will have to spend a good amount of time teaching your children the things they should be learning in school, because there is very little actual teaching happening at Lakewood. A great deal of time is spent entertaining the children and making sure they have fun at school. There are movie days, pajama days, playground days, party days, etc. Total focus and considerable pressure on the MAP test for what should be a simple assessment of what the kids already know. If teachers would teach the kids all year long what they should be learning, the MAP tests will take care of themselves. Instead they try to bend the entire curriculum towards doing well on the MAP test. It makes them seem appear more concerned about their own hides and funding than about the students. The teachers I've met are very pleasant and friendly, but there is quite a bit of bickering and in-fighting ("that's not my job", "I'm going to the union about that", "The principal likes her better.") A new principal starts in 2013-14. Perhaps he will bring the leadership and management skills that have been lacking.
Lakewood is a absolutely wonderful school, full of loving and caring teachers. My son who is now is highschool still volunteers his time too visit his elementary school. My daughter goes there and will be staying right there. Lakewood forever
