We are extremely happy with GSB. My son is in middle school and loves his teachers. They really care about the children. Academically, GSB is superior to any other schools around!

Gill St Bernard's School has been a great learning environment for our children for several years. Faculty and staff work together to meet the needs of each child and to lead them to academic success. The GSB community emphasizes core values which enable our children to flourish and to grow as individuals. We feel very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful school.

A wonderful place for children to learn and grow. I cannot say enough about the atmosphere that GSB creates for it's students and families. As an alumna and a parent at GSB, I am proud to say that GSB has continued to be a wonderful experience for me. More than just focusing on academics, GSB helps children grow into responsible, thoughtful, and inquisitive young people. Academics are intertwined with real world experiences, the facilities are beautiful, and there is an understanding that the school will provide the best so the kids can be their best. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the school community through educational seminars as well as the Parent's Association. Faculty are happy to discuss any issues you or your child may have, and are very accessible. Overall I am excited and very happy to be back at GSB, as a parent this time, and more importantly my daughter is excited to be a part of the school.

My daughter is currently in her second yea at Gill. When we began looking for a new school for her we wanted to find a school environment that would challenge the whole child, not just the athletic or academic child. Gill has been just that. She is challenged every single day with the school's rigorous academics. Being in education myself, I can say that my daughter is being well prepared academically. The academics at GSB are second to none. When extra help is needed, it is always available. The staff at the school always goes the extra mile for their students. The students also are given many experiences to give back to the community by doing community service. Respect of all members of the school community flows through the entire school. She has been encouraged to join the team sports at the school. Students who are artistically talented are given many opportunities to participate in the arts. Socially, my daughter has fit in well. GSB certainly is one of NJ private schools BEST KEPT SECRETS! For the negative comments made, it appears that they are more concerned with athletics than academics!

In an area where quality schools abound, Gill stands out from the crowd on many different levels. My children have had very positive experiences and have developed wonderful relationships with their teachers and peers. They are challenged, respected and held accountable for their actions. I have full confidence that not only will they be very successful as they continue their education at the next level, but they will also develop the skills necessary to pursue whatever path they choose.

Great teachers and great school! Very friendly and warm atmosphere. Both academic and athletic programs are great. It is the best of the area. It is much friendlier than Pingry.

GSB is an outstanding school and we are so delighted that our boys have been there for the past 3 years. They came in to the lower school beginning in Pre-K and Kindergarten and their raw energy is now very focused on academics, creative arts, sports, positive friendships, and other constructive activities. The teachers are simply outstanding as they worked with our kids on understanding their learning style and making accommodations for minor learning differences. Minor differences that may have been a basis for rejection at other private schools and possibly overlooked at a crowded public school. They balance a caring environment with accountability for each student putting forward their best effort and showing strong character. In addition, they have a robust creative arts program which led us to the discovery that our son has a terrific voice and loves to perform. GSB is a very special school and I would encourage any family to take a serious look at the school before making any final decisions.

Gill has been a wonderful experience for us as this is our 7th year. The teachers are engaged and want your child to succeed. They are available to help when needed, but more importantly, the children are advocates for themselves. They have the confidence to seek out help when needed, the compassion to help others and the independence to know what is required of them. I could not be happier with the positive results I have seen in my children. Gill truly feels like an extended family.

I feel sad for the unhappy parent review posted here GSB is not perfect but in my eyes (3 children attend from lower shool to middle school amd upper school) it is as good as it gets. Any private institution depemds on donations but it is not at the forefront of this school and there is no fAvoritism based on net worth. I am not going to refute any further because I would rather focus on the fact that GSB offers an amazing environment to both students and parents alike. This is an extremly well rouinded and grounded school and one just needs to come visit and experience this for yourself. Most important is the fact that my kids are extremely happy here and are reaching their full potential both academically and socially. This school fosters independance and prepares kids for college ( the one that is right for them) and for life. Wish I had attended this school as a kid and by the way,we switched our kids into this school from a public school and we make sacrifices financially to do so.

I have such piece of mind sending my children to Gill St. Bernard's. The level of trust I have in the teachers, staff and administration is fabulous. I do not need to worry that my children are being well prepared for the world they will live and work in. Everything at GSB is geared toward maximum success for each individual child. The character education program is one of teh best I have ever seen!

We have been very disappointed with this private school. Unfortunately, after sending our children here for the past 3 years, we can no longer support this school. The public schools in the area are superior to this private school and can actually live up to the unaffiliated stance that this school claims. The school does not address bullying- very unfortunate for the students and frustrating for the parents. The student's experience is very dependent on the teacher that he/she is exposed to in a given year.

After 4 months in public school, our once engaged and curious first grader was starting to tune out of academics due to boredom. We transferred her to GSB this January and it has been a noticable transformation in just 2 weeks. She enthusiastically shares what she learns with us on a daily basis and looks forward to returning to school every morning. The teachers, students, and parents made this mid-year transfer so easy for all of us by being so welcoming and inclusive. GSB is an wonderful environment and I would encourage any parent to visit the school, meet the staff, and most importantly, speak to the students and their parents!

My husband and I decided to send our children to GSB six years ago and still consider that to be one of the best decisions we have made for our children and our family. The school has challenged my children academically and nurtured them emotionally. I could not ask for a greater balance. The influx of new families to the school and the long tenure of existing families is a true testament to the overall satisfaction of the GSB community.

Our family has benefited from a GSB education for 14 years! Our oldest child has had a successful transition to college and we have several students still at the school. The teachers are committed and caring people that nurture each child as an individual. The staff has supported the academic, social and emotional growth of each of my children and continues to do so daily. The school is large enough to offer a variety of courses, activities, athletics, and performing arts, yet small enough that the faculty and staff know their students. It is an excellent blend, and we are delighted to be part of the GSB family.

I have two children at GSB. My husband and I are both in the field of education so we are very critical as we looked for a school for our children to attend. After 3 years at GSB, we could not be happier. The teachers want to be there, they enjoy teaching and challending the children, and they treat them as individuals. We could not be happier!

After investigating nearly every private school within a 20 mile radius of our home, we chose Gill for our son, and couldn't be happier. Gill creates a positive and nurturing environment for learning and growing. They foster exploration, self-esteem, confidence and poise. They reach and challenge each child as an individual, and appreciate everyone's unique talents. We've been in the Lower School for 3 years, and recommend the school to anyone seeking solid academics in a loving environment.

As a Pingry graduate, I wasn't sure about Gill St. Bernards at first. Now that all three of my kids have been there for several years, I can honestly say that we made the right choice. Gill has a wonderful balance of top notch academics combined with a nurturing extended family environment. It lacks the aggressive cut throat atmosphere that I was subjected to during my schooling. None of my three kids would have thrived in that type of environment, but they are clearly blossoming here. The only criticism that I would have for the school, is that they have to live up to their assertion that they are non-secular and pear back some of their religious influences, mostly around Christmas, into a more neutral and all inclusive holiday program. They have truly found a great balance between academics, athletics, and social development. Gill creates socially mature and well balanced young men and women.

As a parent of a high school student, I underestimated the importance of a safe, supportive learning environment for my son. I learned over his time at GSB that he reached his fullest potential in a setting that appropriately challenged him academically and allowed him to pursue athletics and the arts. Not sure how they do it, but they excel in a lot of areas without becoming so competitive that students become guarded and less willing to put themselves out there.

Our daughter has been at GSB since Kindergarten. After five years I can honestly say GSB is a perfect choice for her. We loved the experience of Lower School. We hope the same continues at Middle School. Based on feedback from other parents we will not be disappointed. My only complaint is the uniforms will not be continued in Middle School. As a parent of a girl, I strongly believe it should be continued through MS. I have been told this is a closed subject even though most LS families would like to continue with it.

My children attended Middle and Upper School and graduated from GSB. One recently graduated from Cornell in the Hotel School and will be attending law school and one is a Senior at Cornell's Engineering School. Both were completely prepared for college by their GSB teachers. I commend Gill for guiding them in their academics and in athletics and, also, for reinforcing integrity, positive values and a great work ethic. Thank you, GSB!

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
