Both my kids attended VEW. For the most part, they had really great, caring teachers. One of my kids experienced some problems with bullying and his teacher addressed it quickly and decisively. When my child went on to Dana Lyon, he experienced the same type of problems to a greater degree and I'm sad to say I did not feel they were addressed adequately there. The current Principal at VEW is not responsive to parent e-mails. Things to be aware of: this is a poor area and many of the students live in less-than-ideal situations. In the lower grades, there are a lot of students w/behavior issues and this can hamper learning. Also, there is little to no enrichment available for advanced students. Curriculum / resources are geared toward the average or struggling student. There is very little science taught. This school, like many others, is caught up in the whole teaching-to-the-test phenomena. One of my kids went literally *weeks* with no recess because there was "no time" for it due to all the work they needed to get done. The teachers are good, caring people, but they are just very restricted in what they can do. I'm sure they find it frustrating too.

We have been thrilled with our children's experience at VEW. Both children have had very professional, kind and dedicated teachers. The school is well maintained and the staff and all terrific.

This is our sons first year and we could not be more pleased with his progress, the support of the staff and the oppertunities for him.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
