Overall, this school is not worth it. The teachers don't challenge the kids and are never helpful and neither is the principal nor the staff in overall. My daughter had problems in school with math and reading and despite the fact that the school sent out letters to possibly send her to summer school, the teacher never wanted to meet with me to discuss the problem. She always put up an excuse. The after-school program is just as bad. My daughter went to the after-school program to prepare for the citywide tests but she always came home complaining that her teacher only taught for 30 minutes and the rest 30 minutes the teacher only talked about her personal problems, and even did her nails. Parent involvement is rarely seen. Overall, this school needs serious changes!
They are involved working in helping each kids needs. Its a very safe place for kids and parents peace of mind.
ive havent seen any thing good about this school,my son comes home and says the teacher yells at him ..i dont think this school dont have what it takes for a child that has a learning disablty and adhd.my child was there 4 one week and the teacher was comparing her own child to mine .qll children acts diffrent no child is alike ..i didnt like that at all ..im from out of state ,and i feel like we r getting treated unfairly...
My daughter is in this school since kindergarten and in the gifted program. Her teachers thus far have been great. However, if it were not for the gifted program which runs very different from the other classes as far as academic expectations i would not have her there. I do not care for the school at all. After school and summer programs have nothing to do with them thats the center for family life and open to kids that do not even go to the school, so you really can't give the school credit for that. Both the principal and vice principal are not very helpful. And the school is not up to par when it comes to standardized testing. If it were not for her small class that she travels with year to year and great teachers in the program she would definetly be in ps 172.
PS 1 principal seems using excessive power for running the school at the expense of students educational future. Both principal and teachers seem self-serving for screening out challenging students when it is school's responsiblities to educate all children with proper guidance. There is not much parents involvement when parents concerns and questions are not answered or answered very late. School breakfast opens late that students with extended day program enter by 8 am, students without extended day program enter by 8:15 am, and all others enter by 8:25 am. How can parents go to work? Nearby schools open for breakfast by 7:30 am and close by 8:15 am. PS 1 after-school programs are good which are run by outside non-profit organization Center for Family Life. Any credit about after-school programs, mini-camp, and extra activities should go to Center for Family Life in collaboration with PS 1.
This school is great if you want your children to learn sports, arts or music. The teachers are unexperienced in my opinion or at least from the experience my daughter has had there. The school is also very slow with responding to parent concerns. The parents who are involved only get rejected of their needs. I wouldn't recommend this school for someone who has their childs education at there best interest.
This is a good school, but not the best school there is out there. Teachers are great and after school programs are excellent as well. However, there needs to be more parent involvement and discipline.
This is one of the greatest schools I/ve known i went to PS1 myself form kindergarden to 5th grade. Its is a great school. No they dnt need more securtity guard they are a great school with great teachers
I think they need more security guards there. At least for the mini school. But everything else a perfect school good teachers and a good principal. It also needs more parent involvment.
My duaghters have been attending ps 1 since the 2nd grade. The teachers are heaven sent, and are an asset to have at this school. There is a wonderful afterchool program that keeps my daughters occupied w/dance, art, music, sports & friends until 6 pm. They love it here, and so do I.
