I am thrilled with PS 11. My daughter is in kindergarten, her first year in the school, and her growth has been tremendous. Her teacher, Ms. Pitts, has not only taught her how to read and write but has instilled a true love of reading and writing. My daughter now writes in her journal when she's upset, creates menus when we're planning a party, makes signs and hangs them all over the house -- she's teaching me things about animals that I didn't know! Aside from her individual experience in kindergarten, I'm also incredibly impressed by Principal Wrighton's wise leadership and commitment, as well as the commitment of the whole school team and especially the Assistant Principals. The PTA is strong and active, providing amazing after school enrichment choices and lots of fun events to engage with the school community.
PS11 is truly a community school. We love that this means all sorts of families and students from all backgrounds make up the school family (and all live nearby). The staff and administration place a strong emphasis on socio-emotional development and I feel my children are truly known and are taught to love their classmates as family. I often say that PS11 is the happiest place on earth - it is intoxicating and contagious as you walk through the halls. Major strengths of this school are their emphasis on analytical and critical thinking and their focus on the arts and sciences. Their fifth graders are truly impressive and articulate. Many have said to me they value that their strengths are nurtured at PS11 so that they had a clear idea of what they wanted for their middle school experience. My kids love learning, love going to school, and you couldn't ask for a nicer group of peers (who they see in their neighborhood).
PS11 is a wonderful neighborhood school with a very active and passionate parent body. I'm happy that I chose this school over some other well sought after schools outside of district 13 or a charter school. The environment is welcoming, expectations are high and the academics are rigorous, but balanced enough so that the children actually enjoy learning. Test prep is important but it isn't the mainstay of the classroom so that the children are actually learning about historical people and subject matter, reading engaging non-fiction and realistic fiction whole class novels and writing essays, not just learning how to take a test. There's a lot of enrichment offered and new things are being added all of the time. Newly added this year, a debate team who has already won awards. As far as improvements go, most of the improvements I would want to see would have to come from the Department of Education. Sure there are personality clashes at times, but that's a part of life and the source must be considered. With 700+ students, utopia doesn't exist.
If you are looking for a school of academic excellence, a challenging and rigorous curriculum in a nurturing setting, enrichment opportunities, extra-curricular programs, classes in The Arts and Sciences, high expectations for all including behavioral expectations, an active parent body, a diverse community, and so much more, the Purvis J, BEHAN school -PS11 just may be the school for you and your child(ren). Currently serving 740+ students and growing, Pre-K - 5.
This school potentially has all the good components of a great public school. Unfortunately the environment between staff and parents is extremely dis-satisfactory. If there is a problem with your child that is more on the fault of the staff, they do not want to hear it and they will make it very obvious. Especially the principal and one of the assistant principals. They speak to you in a very condescending manner as if they were the only people who went to college and got degrees. As an African American its very sad to get that treatment from the principal since she is as well. I have never had any issues of respect and professionalism when dealing with the white staff for the last 3 years that my child has been attending. I try to go with the flow because I believe my child is getting a good education but its sad when there's this lack of feeling welcomed. I think this school needs new leadership.
I had to remove my son from this school. I think the principle in insane and a control freak. I had to remove my son from this school because his teacher was bring very unprofessional. My son is a good kid and it his new school he was immediately placed on the honor role. I think if this school wants to make it they need a new principal. If you can don't send your child to this school you will regret it.
My daughter has been here since PreK and is now finishing up first grade. PS 11 continues to be a wonderful place for our family. They've started a violin program for all second graders (new this year), have a five-day a week afterschool enrichment program, cookshop, playworks, visits from local authors and artists, weekly science, gym, computer, and art classes. Ms. Wrighton and Ms. Hope run a very well-organized ship: a school that truly accommodates a very diverse group of wonderful, wonderful kids. Since PreK, I had the chance to tour a few other schools. What has kept us at 11 is the openess, enthusiasm, and wealth of activities. Notably, PS 9, which is quite similar to 11 (and also a great place), didn't feel quite as much like home to me. Perhaps because we were already entrenched here! If I had any critiques at all, they would have more to do with the new common core standards, which seem to impose kind of arbitrary objectives on how and when children should learn. I do think, however, that PS 11's administration has a realistic handle on how to implement them effectively without sacrificing the many enrichment classes that make it a great school.
i had to take my daughter from this school she had hard time and got depressed for the but true 3 years thats she was there she had nothing but problems i believe this school is very unorganized when my daughter had problems with other students no one really helped her she was so depressed i had to transfer her sorry but true
P.S. 11 has been the precursor to my numerous successes throughout my personal & professional attainments in life...The science and recreation instructor and the many other staff persons are the standard by which I hold other educators...From the Royal Rangers, Air Force ROTC, Collegiate Career, Civic Volunteerism and working in the Non-for-profits...The educational dreams and aspirations eventually pursued began there...and although life has thrown some curve balls at me from time to time the educational anchor given to me there has allowed me to stay in the game on an equal playing field....theirs is the model worth replicating...
My child has attended PS11 since 2nd grade until her recent graduation. She has loved the school the entire time. Mrs. Wrighton is a very caring and excellent principal. My daughter's excelled in her academics by her last year in PS11 and that's because of Mrs. Wrighton's diligence in making sure that everyone of her students do well in her awesome school. With all the various programs they have at this school to help the children, they cannot fail. The teachers are great and the parent involvement is excellent too.
I am a proud parent of a child in Kindergarten at PS 11 a wonderful school. From the first day school to the present my son's experience has been great. He has been blessed with a wonderful teacher in his own words Ms. Pitts is AMAZING. The administration and staff are very friendly, warm and welcoming. I truly feel that I have found a caring and safe place for my son a school that gives a feel of family which is very important.
HAPPY is what I am to be a PROUD PARENT of two children who attend PS 11! What a great, positive experience my babies are having at such a wonderful educational institution - they love their school. The administration and staff set the tone for what is a friendly, warm and welcoming environment. I have truly found a "school family". They are caring and attentive to every need that children have. Their tireless efforts to continue to make this school an academic paradise is so very evident. I have peace of mind when I kiss my children good-bye and entrust the staff with caring for them in my absence. KUDOS to all the wonderful parents who volunteer their time and put so much energy into working together toward reaching the epitome of this school's success... you are to be commended! What else can I say? I feel like I'm one of the lucky few...it's my pleasure to be here!
We just came out from the PTA meeting and I must say that after every PTA meeting I return home with more energy and willingness to give my time and energy to this amazing school and community. The principal is indeed outstanding! And the school is going towards what we are dreaming of every day. There are more trips, and the curriculum is going towards more project-based assignments in class. More enrichment during schools hours that includes musical instruments with Poetry and Motion as well as a farm box initiative as part of Cook Shop every Friday. We are building a new greenhouse and the kids are going to start planting in Feb. We have a new recess program with recess coaches starting Jan 17th. That means more physical activities through games even in cold months of the year. The kids have more Art and Science (my son has both, each twice a week). I think the kids at PS11 are very happy and doing great academically. What a great school!
"PS 11 is a wonderful school. My Son is very happy and motivated, and I am amazed at how much he is learning. This is his second year at PS11 and we can't be happier with the students, teachers, and the community. The school welcomes parents who want to get involved. There are so many ways to help! We just got the enrichment after school brochure and we have so many great programs to choose from :Dance, Art, Piano,Chess,Tennis, yoga, soccer, violin, singing, drama, guitar, mad science. The school also offer enrichment programs during school hours: chess, cook shop , music and poetry. The principal is extremely warm, dedicated, and intelligent . An inspiring leader! The assistant principal, parent coordinator, teachers, staff, PTA and parent body are extremely welcoming and friendly. This is an amazing school."
We left this school this year and as members of the neighborhood were hesitant to "give up" on the school, but the reality is that we didn't feel welcome as a mixed family with a child who was mixed ethnically. The "white" side of our family was met with distrust and never felt welcome by the PTA and leadership. The school says they are open to the changing community, but their actions show a different level to what they are saying they stand for. We wanted to stay, but were not confident that we would see any improvements. Teachers were all friendly and they seem to teach well, but if you challenge anything set in motion by the PTA or school leadership your suggestions fall on deaf ears. Our new school is incredibly diverse and overwhelmingly welcoming to new parents of all ethnicities joining in on activities.
My son goes to pre-K at ps11 and having been at two pre-schools, he keeps making me promise he can stay here. The students, teachers, administration and parents all help to make the school a warm, safe, exciting place to be. The administration supports the teachers unequivocally, and it seems as if they've protected the students from feeling the pain of the recent budget cuts. PS11 has a wonderful reading program --we're looking forward to kindergarten.
The leadership of this school is unimpressive as they are incapable of dealing with the dynamics of the changing neighborhood. The school lacks vision as well as strong leadership. The teachers are mostly fine. Parent involvement is met with distrust and thanklessness and if you have any suggestions on how to make things better it is met with contempt and defensiveness. The school sells itself on being progressive when it fact it is very conservative and meets suggestion of improvement and change with strong resistance. Academically the school is fine in respects to meeting achievement standards and grade levels but what it lacks in its social atmosphere out weighs those benefits.
If you have a child that is advanced this is not the school for you! Since phasing out their lead program in favor of the new school wide enrichment model accelerated students are left bored and unchallenged. The principle treats any parent that challenges her current polices or programs with disrespect & disdain.
My daughter attends PS 11. She has chess, art, music, science, and cooking class. She has the option to participate in after school programs like dance, piano, sign language, drama and Madd science. She always has something interesting to talk about when she comes home or an activity /project at school that she wants me to attend. I am impressed with the efforts of the PTA and the principal to reach out to all parents. The PTA even braved the NY winter cold with a table full of muffins, hot coffee and fliers to greet parents bringing their kids to school in the morning. In my opinion this school is definitely on the upswing and has the atmosphere, drive and test scores to be competitive with some of Brooklyn's best public schools.
My son has attended PS 11 since the second grade. This year (2007) he graduates. He is a high acheiver academically and PS 11 has done a fine job meeting his intellectual needs. Notably my son's emotional maturity has not matched his academic advancement and PS 11 has also done an acceptable job dealing with his immaturities and sometimes challenging behavior. However, because of his strong personal effort and support at home, combined with good communication and cooperation with the administration he has finally achieved an appreciable balance of academic and social skills. PS 11 is getting even better as a more involved and action oriented parent body has enrolled thier children in the school over the past 2 years. There are good enrichment programs, the SLT is effective, PTA is excellent, teachers are dedicated, new pricipal made a difference. The community is progressive inside and outside the school. Kudos!
