The one positive about this school is the proximity to our home. Other than that, I am horrified. My child can certainly be a bit talkative due to being excited about being with classmates and engaging in the whole learning process, but arrived to join the pre-k program as a well-spoken, well-mannered 3 year-old, with advanced education from home schooling combined with a great daycare structure received from 9 mths. The teachers admittedly pointed out that our child was advanced & it would be difficult for them to provide a curriculum for children with different/advanced levels of education. Because their program lacks the enrichment & challenge for children with advanced education levels, we've found that our child has lost some of the excitement for learning. If not for our continued efforts at home, we believe our child would have lost all zeal completely. Our child has developed a mechanism in which to purposely dumb-down and pretend to not know the work so as to receive some type of attention in the school environment. BTW, the homework given is beyond sub-par with grammatically incorrect & unclear directions. The school's programs are severely lacking.

PS 138 is a great school. I have a 5th grader and a 1st grader, and both are in JPL.

Most teachers are great but also some have given up... One day coming in the school an eight grader was shouting at the guard saying, "P*#@!Y" and the guard shouted the same bad word out...WOW!!!

My kindergarten son has been involved with a series of incidents in both the cafeteria and the gym since entering 138 this year. He has come home with a bloody nose, a bump on his head after having it slammed on the cafeteria table, and he had a spork thrust into his eye. I spoke to both the principal, the assistant principal for the lower grades, and the dean of discipline to no avail. The school has a serious problem with a lack of security and attentive personnel. This is a very dysfunctional school and the administration is nothing but inept. I believe it should be shut down or completely revamped. Similar to what a previous posting mentioned, when I complained to the principal she did not say anything and was unable to maintain eye contact with me.

I'm very unhappy with this school. My child attends 1st grade here, the grade where she builds her foundation for future academic success. I feel this very important period has been wasted at PS 138. Her class in particular is so disruptive, academics in thwarted in the face of discipline. That is the teacher's and school's main focus, making sure the children behave. Yes the kids need to behave, but I shouldn't only hear about my child's 'progress' when she was disruptive. The school really needs to consider positive reinforcements to encourage the children to want to succeed. My child told me the other day she misses her prior teacher because her current teacher is always angry and yelling; that should not be her experience.

I attended this school as a child and now my nephew is attending PS 138. There has been a tremendous improvement since the new principle has been in place. There is a strong focus on academic achievement and excellence. Disruptive behavior is not tolerated and the school staff does work proactively. I have had the pleasure to meet personally with Mr. Dankos (Dean), Ms. Tyler and my nephews' indivdual teachers. They worked closely to assess and resolve some of the issues that he was having during the first half of the year. Their genuine care and concern was evident in their actions. Once staff is aware that there are concerned and involved family members, the help is there. Unfortunately, there is a gross lack of participation by the parents in the school. Maybe parent workshops would be effective in getting them to come out.

P.S. 138 is more focus their academic programs. they strive to make your children come out on the top. They do provide art and other activities. But what they need the most in this school is parent involvement. The school lacks parent involvement most parent just drop their children off and don't come back till it is time for them to come out from school. P.S.138 is a good school they teach your children the requirements of the city wide test. If your child is falling behind in their work they will pull that child out and give them an one to one leasson on the subject that they are lacking in.
