This school could not be worse. There is no discipline for the jr/sr high students, they swear directly at the teachers in class with nothing being done. Classes are rowdy and out of control. Candor's focus is on sports over education. They are very proud of their athletic record, but little emphasis is put on respect in the classroom. One teacher even stated in exasperation, 'I feel sorry for any student that comes here and actually wants to learn.' I can't wait to move out of this district.
I am a graduate of Candor Central School and didn't realize how good an education I got at Candor until I got into college. I was much more prepared for my college courses than any of the other students in my classes. In many cases, my 1st year courses feel like refresher classes.
We have been in this district (from out of state) for just over 4 months. We have been very pleased with the caring faculty at both the high school and the elementary school here in Candor. The small, close-knit community is a wonderful place to raise a family. While my children have had some difficulty adjusting to the difference between Candor and their old school (curriculum), the staff has been very eager to help and I can see the improvement. I highly recommend Candor schools if moving to Tioga County.
Candor is one of the few places where the school and community work closely together. The school is small, and there really is personal friendship and concern among students, parents, students, and administrators and teachers. For a still rural area, the population is surprisingly diverse. Classes are smaller, giving students more individual attention. The academic curriculum is standard and offers the same opportunities found anywhere else. It is the caring faculty that makes the difference. I can also speak positively for the music, art, and sports currucila. The teachers and coaches involved do their utmost to help and encourage students make the most of these programs. I like Candor's schools. The atmosphere there is supportive and not intimidating. I taught at Candor many years ago but have kept in touch. I regret ever having left Candor; I feel like I left my life there. I would go back if I could.
