Primrose School

I agree with the review back in 2009. If your child is middle of the road or compliant then they likely will do well at Primrose. The problem is educators are evaluated on their students succeeding so students who are not doing well will sometimes be moved around or told that perhaps primrose is not a good fit. I personally find the special ed teachers lacking compared to some of the special ed teachers in surrounding districts BUT I find the resources and amount of help a child can receive with various therapies to be stellar at Primrose. I don't get the feeling some of the special ed teachers know how to deal with some of the unique needs of some of the students and none seem up to the challenge. However, SIS and the high school seem to have excellent reputations in dealing with students who are very challenging. In a nutshell if your child is middle of the road, they'll thrive here. If not, it's a coin toss.

Son is a student there. Good facilities. Outstanding teachers. Stimulating, diverse. Excellent administrators, knowledgeable, helpful, available. Very good parent involvement. Our son has advanced quite rapidly there.

My daughter is a first grader at Primrose. She is having some learning difficulties and I must say that Primrose is handling it quite well. They have created an ISP (Instructional Support Plan) for my daughter which has placed her in smaller groups so she doesn't feel lost. She is also in the Reading Recovery program which includes one-on-one time for 30 minutes a day, everyday. I see a big improvement. Her teacher is also very involved and very attentive to my daughter's needs. She emails me with updates and seems to genuinely care about her progress. If you think your child has some difficulty learning, speak up!! The help is there if your child neeeds it!

The Kindegarten Program at Primrose was excellent. My son had Mrs. Maria French and by January he was reading books from cover to cover and comprehending and having discussions with us. Also the school really made his interest in Math grow. He likes to add and subtract and for a 5 year old I think this is great. The enthusiasm and excellent classroom skills of Mrs. French and the teaching assistant Mrs. Tomasullo have given our son the greatest education start. So far we are pleased with Primrose Elementary and we look forward to a great 1st grade. Please keep in mind that its a parents responsibility to reinforce what the children learn throughout the day whether its after school, early evenings or weekends. Its your childs future, work with them!

I have three children in Somers schools. The teachers - with one or two exceptions - have been outstanding. I do agree that students with any special needs are not necessarily given the attention they may need. I would also say that this is a school district not taking the dual working parents into account.

I have three children that went through Primrose all at different levels of acheivment. They are all thriving and I attribute much of their success in the older grades to the strong foundation Primrose provided. We are fortunate to live in Somers and have access these quality public schools.

Primrose is a good school if your child is a middle of the road student. If he/she does not present with any educational challenges, it is likely that your child will have a good experience at Primrose. Unfortunately, this school is really dropping the ball for those children who fall out of that middle of the road category. The re-mediation that is offered for kids who are struggling readers is a joke at best and shows zero signs of improving. If your child appears to be advanced academically, they will likely become very bored with the curriculum and sadly there is nothing in place to provide them with enrichment. Though no public school can be a perfect fit for each and every student, to say that this one is not meeting the needs of a vast number of the students who attend, is a gross understatement!

This school has too many classes and is overloaded with students. The workload for a first grader is ridiculous! The administrator is unconcerned with parent/student morale and only sees things his way. You will not get very far in dealing with him and have a better chance of having a happy child if you move out of the district or consider private school.

Primrose has a very involved, caring and professional staff. I attended Primrose as a child and my daughter now is in grade 2 and loves the school as much as I did. I know she is getting the absolute best education there is. My daughter looks forward to school everyday because she has had three wonderful teachers in the past three years. I feel safe having her at Primrose because of their high standards of safety procedures throughout the school. Primrose is an overall excellent school.
