My son has been attending Growing Up Green since they first opened. This school is a gem in District 30. We love the philosophy of the school, the teachers are awesome and truly care about the kids.
My daughter is in second grade and adores her school. She loves learning, and speaks about all her school projects with great enthusiasm and engagement. She has had wonderful, caring teachers every year, who know how to make learning fun and meaningful. My son will be entering kindergarten this fall, and we are happy to have him join the Growing Up Green Community.
As the years go on, I am very unsatisfied. Most parents complain about the academic weaknesses of this school, this year they have added more staff and advisers but the school is so mismanaged and unorganized, it really doesn't help. They need to be more aggressive with their teaching methods and have a stronger curriculum. I wince every time I see the homework. This school lacks sufficient programs, variety, sports in non-existent and the After School Programs are ridiculous. It's a good school if you want a close-knit community but if you want an education don't set your foot in here!
Our son started Kindergarten last year and had amazing teachers and a great experience. This year he has great teachers and is having another GREAT year! Great friends, great school atmosphere he's excited to go to school and I'm excited he's in this school!
Great school, my son started kindergarten here this year, and I can really see progress.
My 2 sons goes to this school and what I love about this school is that you could so confident leaving your kids there every day. My older sin is on 3rd grade now and he is been there since Kinder and every year he is been such great progress coming back to school after summer. Since last year coming back on the first day of school was so hard but since last year thanks god for the help of everyone in school his progress are unbelievable he only suffer for the first two days which in the past will take him a month. My younger start Kinder and same thing happen to him with the anxiety of me leaving him there I am so glad that his both teachers in his class they love their students like their own children that for the past weeks he is no longer sad and crying after mommy leave him their. I loved my kids school for everything they are. I will highly recommend this school please try it and you will see it.
My child was accepted in this school. I like it because it is not to crowded. Looks this is a great school.
Teachers and staff in this school really care about kids and parents as well, very aproachable and always ready to listen. Specially got to appreciate it after my son went to camp this summer in one of Astoria's catholic schools. Teachers in charge of camp were rude and narrow minded. It will be so refreshing to go back to our school this fall and wonderful Growing Up Green community.
Parents should know that what i loved about this school is that any parent could b very involved with the teachers and school. They help parents and students. They give you a lot support for new students and regular students. My older son will be attending 3rd grade and my little one will be going for Kinder so excited.
Wonderful caring teachers. Parents have access to the classroom. Teachers are very approachable. A healthy holistic approach to education that is not all about test preparation.
Growing Up Green has proven to be a wonderful fit for our son and our family. We really value how the teachers and staff interact with us and with each other; they really model respect and how to be good members of a community. We value their methods of hands on learning and how they teach kids of ask and answer their own questions.
We are so lucky our daughter got in here! No more morning "illnesses" - she LOVES school again! At the end of last year (3rd grade in a different school) she was hating it. Now that she is at GUGCS she is rediscovering the joy of learning.
My son is just loving Kindergarten here. He has so much fun with the class pets, the frequent field trips and the daily specials (art, music, language, science lab, gym). We love the focus on social skills and science. Parents -- no, the entire family -- are made to feel extremely welcome anytime. (Not the case at all NYC public schools!) I agree that the principal provides strong, clear-headed leadership and sets the tone for their "responsive classroom" cultural approach, which is effective at keeping order through positivity, not yelling. It's heart-warming to see the kids help teachers keep the focus on learning. The biggest weakness is the old school and small courtyard but the staff makes the most of that shortcoming with garden boxes and sports equipment outside. Fingers crossed for a middle school and larger facility! Signed, Heather Moore, happy parent
When I walked into this school three years ago, I knew it was the place for my child and I was not disappointed. The academics are wonderfully engaging with an emphasis on science, hands-in discovery and team-building. The principal is one of the most dedicated administrators I've seen with an exceptional ability at hiring a great teaching staff. He continually works to lessen the teacher/student ratio. Just last month he added two more teachers to pull students out of classrooms for lots of small group work. My children are in 2nd and K and they absolutely love the school and I am amazed at what they are learning.
This is a great school with excellent teachers! The staff is very friendly and always willing to help. My daughter loves this school, she has learned so much and she never complains of being bored in school. The teachers are trully what make the school so special! They are very nice, caring, hands on teaching at it's best. Our family is very happy to be part of growing up green!
The school runs on all of the hard work of its teachers. They represent some of the best in the NYC system right now. Unfortunately they administration is ineffective at best, led by a substance-less Principal that fails to address problems with bullying, high staff turnover and high student - teacher ratio.
WE LOVE THIS SCHOOL. My daughter is in kindergarten. This school provides everything that I was hoping for for my child. The science program is wonderful. Animals in every room. A nurturing and supportive environment. All the staff knows all the kids names. Many strong field trips. Lots of parent involvement. Open school so parents can come whenever they want during any program. My daughter is reading and writing and has begun to LOVE reading. The teachers are amazing.
Yes they do have a nice "goal" about the green factor but GUGCS does not know how to handle disipline, they go to far for what most people with consider commun behevior of a child under 7 years old. Lack of effective prevetive action.
Excellent School. Amazing, engaging curriculum with lots of hands on learning & field trips. They have music, art, gym, computers and science lab twice a week. Students are having fun, so they don't realize how much they are learning. The teachers listen & care, we can contact them by cell & email whenever needed. And GREEN means more than just recycling. They are learning to be respectful, responsible members of the school community & the world. My child says "Great!"
My daughter is a 2.Grade student at GUGSC. And She loves it. Excellent teachers, strong curriculum.
