Isaac E Young Middle School

I find this school to be sub-par. Some teachers are allowed to complain to the students at length rather than teaching. The students are not allowed to bring text books home to review. Spanish teachers would rather kick students out of the classroom and blame problems on the parents. The school counselor is too concerned with defending the teachers rather than listening to parent concerns.

This is a really Great school. My son just graduated, and he was given a lot of advanced classes to match his intellect and develop it. He took a lot of classes in High School, being an 8th grader, he took honors chemistry and trigonometry. Counselors are very proactive, they develop programs fit to each individual child. Teachers are very knowledgeable, friendly. Principal is like a father to students, he even meets students in the mornings near the school entrance. I definitely recommend this school!!!

Teachers, Counselors, Staff Administration, and parents are involved in the education, wellness, and success of their students. IEY has so much to offer their students. It has a well rounded education, sports, and extra curricular activities for our students and they are prepared to meet the challenges of High School.

I Iove this school because it has the best teachers who really care about their students. All 3 of my kids went there and they have really succeded in their lives now thanks to the teachers and staff at IEY. Good Luck

I.E. Young Middle School is one of the most diverse schools in the country with students representing 35 countries. This is a school where kids can truly learn to get along with people from all walks of life -- it's not theoretical, it's what this school is all about. The staff is extremely committed, caring and motivated and the school is filled with art, murals, flags from every state in the U.S. and flags from all the countries represented by the student body. In 2008 Metlife Foundation recognized IEYoung as a breakthrough school for the significant improvement in grades.The 8th grade accelerated biology program also has unique hospital mentoring program where students are assigned to with a doctor who guides them in conducting a library research project in their specialized field of medicine. Students benefit from working closely with medical professionals and the challenge of conducting a year-long research project.

I'm now a 6th grader in Isaac E. Young Middle School and it is amazing. The students are in high levels. The teachers teach nicely and they make the students participate. It makes the school a better place. Isaac is a school that cares. The students love to participate and so do I!

My son, who is now a freshman in HS, was on honor roll the entire 3 years while in Isaac and graduated with honors. I found the staff to be excellent with him and the school does a lot for the honor students. On the other hand, I have a daughter who is still in Isaac, 7th grade, who is in inclusion and even though her teachers were good I felt that inclusion on a whole is treated much differently than the honors students. Some of the teachers expected more out of children in inclusion without looking at the facts that this child needs extra help for a reason and needs re-focusing. On a whole the school is great if your child is motivated and stays away from the wrong crowds. Contact your child's counselor to meet all the teachers and get/give numbers & email addresses. It helps.

I am a parent of a current 7th grader at IEY. At first, I was told to send my child elsewhere, as we were new to New Rochelle. I decided to give IEY a chance. I must say that I am very pleased. My child is happy, has very good, dedicated teachers and a pretty decent afterschool program. Since this is a large school, problems are bound to occur. However, I find that the principal and his staff are doing the best they can. I am glad that I decided to let my daughter attend IEY. I have no regrets!

I think the principal is approachable and open to listening to the concerns of parents. Yes,there is always a middle person so you never get a teacher directly! Most educators are academically high caliber. I am disappointed in the lack of tolerance and equality. IEY promotes diversity and great programs but the students are in ethnic cliques and the lunch room behavior leaves something to be desired! (Yet, the food is good!) Dismissal is Ok in front of the school for the first half hour. If your kid goes for extra help or fun activities then worry b/c nobody is watching outside. Walk a few blocks away; you will see fighting and kids out of control. My kid happens to be an honors student but that is b/c of his/her own determination and requests for help. Not a place for the quite child! Stay involved and your kid will do well.

Isaac E. Young middle school is great! My child was scared of going to this school. We told her that a student is good no matter in what school. Now in 2005 My daughter graduated with honors. Which means this school is great! It has many extracurricular programs and will help your child bloom into a fabulous learner. This school is a blue ribbon school. If you are looking for a middle school in New Rochelle try Isaac and you will find this is true!

The quality of academic problems if below average. There are too many 'middle people' in order to spaek with you child's teacher. If your child is having a problem. Some of the teachers do not seem interested in giving extra help to those students who they know need it.

I'm not a parent but better yet I'm a student at Isaac. I'm in my 2nd year and to me this school is great. Yeah we get into fights and things but that's life. I just hate it when our principal compares us to ALMS. It gets very annoying. Anyways IEY has tons of afterschool activities which is great. I'm on the step team and it's real fun. I hope we win this year or at least come in 2nd place. Ther's so much to chose from afterschool. I love my school so much. But last year in 6th grade was real fun.

My daughter is beginning her third year at Isaac. She loves it. She is in the National Honor Society, on the softball team and in the drama club. She takes Latin and will be in all Honors classes next year. The teachers are dedicated and differentiate instruction as needed. They have excellent technology opportunties and a great art program. She has also had the opportunity to do volunteer work through the school at the local nursing home. Her guidance counselor has been very responsive to questions and concerns. All in all, our experience has been a very positive one.

Isaac does need a lot of improvement however, parents are the missing element. Attendance at PTA meetings is at best dismal. Teachers and administrators seem to care about the students however the system does not allow for effective discipline of those few who spoil everything for everyone. My child had a very successful academic experience and that is because I was involved every step of the way.

The few dedicated teachers are the only saving grace at this school. The majority of the security staff, seemingly right off-the-street, only add to an undisciplined, rowdy environment. There are far too many fights and poor leadership. My meetings with leadership were disappointing at best.

Principal is living in a dream world. There's too much student violence, too many distractions for students who want to learn. My daughter is a national honor society inductee. I'm removing her from the school because she is fearful of the violence there and some of the students who come there specifically to pick fights.
