Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

So far we are quite happy with this school. My daughter has only been in the school for a year, so I don't have much to say yet.

The school staff is racist! They dont give the kids that are struggling the help they need. They inform the parents late and they dont provide any solution on what can you do to get your child the help needed. My son fell behind because he did not get the assistance he needed. The school informed me later during the year. I had to do my own reasearch on what I should do and what resources can I use to get thehlp needed. Its a shame that Outside tutors helped my child and the school did not. Also these gifted and talented jids should get retested yearly. Also the principle is always in a meeting and bever available for parents concerns.

We are very happy with P.S 166. The teachers and staff are wonderful and responsive and we have been really impressed with the curriculuum and standards. Any issues we have are dealt with in a responsive way and our son has thrived in his two years here

We are extremely please with our daughter's teacher this year in the 4th grade G & T program. She works hard and is connected with the parents. However, the overall building morale seems to suffer- perhaps due to the stressors of the administration? None the less - Mrs "L" is great and challenges our daughter in a supportive and kind manner.

This school USED to be agreat place and a wonderful environment, but in the past 2 years it has gone downhill. Low morale among staff, discipline problems have increased and the general atmosphere of the school has declined! Not a pleasant place!

One's experience at P.S. 166 is largely dependent on the quality of the classroom teacher. There are many excellent and committed teachers at P.S. 166, but there are also ones who are terrible. Be very involved and watchful, and contact the parent coordinator and principal at the first sign of trouble. Overall, our experience has been very positive. Our children have been at PS 166 since 2009. Since then we're on our fourth principal, our second assistant principal, and the common core standards have everyone scrambling to catch up. The emphasis on the state tests is really marked, especially in the upper grades. They really drill the kids, and then once the tests are over, it's as if everyone is just running out the clock to the end of the year. I found this troubling. The parent coordinator is excellent and does a great job. Overall, we've been very happy with the school and I would recommend it. As a parent, you really need to be involved and watchful to ensure your child gets the best experience possible.

I wish it was K-1! I have 2 in G&T. We have had a home at PS166 for 6yrs. We came from a private school(Clarement) and many parents from that pre-school took advantage of the G&T program at PS 166 as well. My children were challenged in a nurturing environment. The highly involved faculty, PTA and other parent involvement was key. I have always felt welcomed in the classroom and would stop in often to drop off projects or participate in a class event (e.g., book publishing party or science fair). The hallways are silent during class time and the kids are relaxed and happy. All of the students were highly motivated and academically competative. The Chess Team is the #1 extracurricular activity regarding participation and competative performance but they also have a great theatre program as well as a track team. The afterschool enrichment is also great bargain with reasonable fees for classes such as Lego Robotics, Cooking, Private Piano lessons, Ping Pong, Math Games, etc.). They are also a "green" school. They have a new reading garden and discussions of a new playgound are happening now. An upgrade in the technology department would be nice. I highly recommend PS166.

I am a P.S.166 Graduate. During my 6 years at this school, all of my teachers were wonderful! I feel that I learned a lot at 166. I love all that they had to offer. While I was there, they offered Music Class, Physical Education, Dance Class, Computer, and Art. I was also in Honors Chorus. I was very pleased with my education when I graduated. The teachers that I had were GREAT educators. In 3rd grade, I received a 4 in my NY State Math test, an average is a 3. I hope nothing in P.S.166 has changed!

As a parent, I'm a bit shocked that Principal Hand and the teachers received only four stars. It's staggering how professional, kind, and excellent these two categories are.Without the Principal's leadership, the other four categories five stars wouldn't be here.

This is a great school. My son is in Kindergarten and he just loves the school and his teachers. It is amazing what he has learned in the past couple of months. He also is given the opportunity twice daily to do what he loves most and that is to draw. The school allows children free time to do what the children are passionate about.

PS166 is a uniquely small and personal public school in a beautifully designed building. The faculty staff is dedicated to the kids and the high academical standards. The G&T program stands out thanks to the teachers and the contributions of the parents, and my 1st grader has exploded in knowledge and is excited about her home work and to go to school every day.

I cannot say enough good things about this school. The teaching is exemplary. The classrooms exciting. The children engaged. My son, who switched from a private school, has never been happier, more challenged, and excited about learning. I only wish we began here in kindergarten. What a gem

Having been a supervisor of instruction, a professor of education, and a basic education administrator for a long career, I have a very critical eye when visiting classrooms and watching instructional activities. The program selection, the enrichment opportunities for learning different children is notable and an atmosphere where 'learning progress' is key, makes PS 166 a school of which to be proud. I feel extremely confident that children at PS166 are receiving an excellent and challenging education. My career has been in upper middle class achieving school districts and this 'urban gem' is every bit as good as any I have seen.

The existing small classes, and highly involved teachers are something any school can achieve, given decent management (regardless of how rare such management seems to be). This school exists in a fine, historic school building that gives the kids a sense of history, and the value of institutions that have existed long before they were born. This is a much needed sense in our contemporary society, where 40 year old schools are 'obsolete' according to popular opinion. Teardowns of perfectly good buildings, and disregard of time proven principles will not be lightly endorsed by these future citizens.

PS 166 provides all students with a rich curriculum. Its teachers are up to date with technology and give students opportunity to enhance their knowledge. PS 166 takes seriously students health. Besides having the most professional and caring nurse, PS 166 (since last year) started a Going-Green campaign. Posting 'No Idling Signs' and switching its cleaning products. Debbie Hand is a dedicated principal which works extra hours and wears many hats. I can't think of having my daughter in no other school.

My two grandchildren attend P.S. 166. They enthusiastically embrace their academic studies, artistic programs and enriching field excursions. Much of their eagerness to participate in school activities is due to the excellence of the curriculum along with the energy and commitment of faculty. Bravo P.S. 166!

There is tremendous commitment by the parents to support both physically (in time) and financially the academic goals of the students. We have great partnerships with local cultural organizations. We are new to PS166 this year (incoming Kindergarten family) and we have been nothing but pleased with the school, teachers, principal, staff, children and families. From the initial contact with the parent coordinator over the summer, to the PTA president and all staff in the building we have felt a warm welcome. This feeling of welcome creates a strong community feeling. In addition, the building is located on a beautiful block across from a lovely public garden. The school's exterior is gorgeous (a landmark building), with an outdoor reading garden and new Kindergarten playground. The children are lucky enough to experience a wide variety of 'extra' classes where they leave their regular classroom and travel in the building to weekly music class, science lab, dance and PE (also studio art in upper grades). We look forward to another 5 years at PS166!

PS166 is a wonderful school. We now have a new pricinpal -Debbie Hand, who has proven to be an excellent leader. My son has been in both the general education and the Gifted and Talent classes. No matter what one might say the teachers are excellent on both sides of the fence in this school. There used to be more of a division between the 2 programs but lately it seems to have been corrected. We have a new science lab and the afterschool programs are great too.

I moved to the upper west side from Midtown 64th street, I remember enrolling my daughter found the school to be beautifully kept both inside and out. but did notice from the beginning that the school was serogated not to mention the principal at that time Mr. Ronga assumed that I was coming from 135th Street because of my nationality as if , Hispanic people are not allowed to be well off. Not to mention he never mentioned to me a Gifted and Talented Program, I came to find out about it this September which by the way is my Daughters last year before she moves on to Middle School. Finally the Board of Education is listening to the parents and replaced the Principal with Ms. Debbie Hand which I think will be a great asset to our community and it is a shame it took 3 years.

PS 166 got a NEW principal this year (2008/9), Debbie Hand, and she has shown, from the onset of the school year, a strong hand in leadership and parent interaction. She is a polished professional who has garnered the parent body's confidence. The teachers and the program are great, and I'm sure will only grow in their excellency under her guidance.

My son loves the gifted and talented program at 166. Teachers are warm and of high quality. The building was renovated in recent years which makes the environment very friendly for students. Opposite the Claremont stables -- you see horses on the street on your way to school -- neat! Playyard was also renovated.

I am a parent of a 3rd grader and a former student myself,my son also attended 1st-5th grade now in 7th grade, the school has gone through tremendous changes over the years for the better quality of education for the students. P.S.166 is like a family, its a second home away from home for my child, the teachers and school staff from the school secretary to the school aides,Know the kids by name, parent envolvment has increased over the years also and has helped raised money for the school. The school has a great afterschool program on site 'Enrichment Club' and a Chess club, the after school program offers many different classes from cooking-art/dance,sports etc. I love to attend the end of the school year dance festival that the entire school performs outside the renovated school yard, and all year round events that our students and parents/staff work hard on.

This school offers traditional curriculum such as math, science, english etc.. It also includes art, computer, gym and music. The teachers are dedicated to the students and really care for them. P.S.166 is diverse and the building is one of the best in condition. The principle is not so inviting and at times can be rude to parents. Some of the class rooms are unorganized but most have space. There are two playgrounds. One in the back for the smallers kids and the main one in the side front of the school for the bigger students. The playgrounds are well gaited and supervised. The children participate in activities that are shared with the community on holidays such as Halloween, where they have their famous haunted house and games. Across the street from the school is a horse stable, and you know you don't find much of those in New York City!
