The teachers at Village Community School school are phenomenal one wouldn't hesitate to help any student under any circumstance. I will be graduating this year and have been at this school since 2005. From experience, I know VCS helps children grow to be empathetic, outspoken, and challenge-embracing members of society. Their curriculum is fantastic, revolving around social studies, (current and historical). Their athletics are the best, and there is no gender discrimination whatsoever. School plays, sports teams, after school, and electives are all open enrollment, and nobody will be excluded or cut from the activity. Village Community School is an outstanding school, and should definitely be considered, (and be sure to read their mission statement and diversity statement).

Village Community School, or VCS, is a private co-ed day school located in the west village, drawing some students from other parts of the City. The teachers there are excellent overall, although there are always some exceptions. The kids that graduate from there are generally all well spoken and kind. The educational platform is progressive, with a unique "interaging" of students until 6th grade. Some parents like this and others don't. In the end its not that big of a deal, although it usually does result in an extra year of school for most kids, and that is not seen as a negative. It is located in a modern building that actually seems like it was built as a school, as opposed to many Manhattan schools which are cobbled together. They do not assign grades until the later years. Homework really ramps up in the "upper school" (grades 6 through 8). The school really tries to focus on learning for its own sake and does not emphasize grades. This is a great thing, but may hinder kids as they transition to other schools for the high school grades. Overall its a wonderful school with a very good set of teachers, and a solid, well respected (if somewhat stiff) head of school.

A diamond in the rough. VCS does an excellent job of identifying each childs abilities and challenges each one to do their best. The social aspect is dominant in the lower school and as the grades progress the students rise to the challenges of team work and independent thinking. The parent community is supportive and actively engages in activities to support the students and teachers.

Problem is there is real no curriculum in this school. Kids are happy but most have and need lots of tutoring- the school expects it. Administration a nightmare.

This school is, well, weird. Even the system in which they move kids up in the grades is weird. The athletics are good, but they are 'free thinking' in a way that allows kids to get the wrong answer and still be right....

VCS is a wonderful progressive school. It is very down-to-earth and rooted in solid values in a city that can be too materialistic and flighty. The academics are solid, the kids are kind and confident, and the school turns out true critical thinkers with a sense of who they are, what they want and the skills to achieve their goals. My one complaint is that the arts program is not particularly strong. The music program is very weak, there is no dance, and the visual arts could be better. Outside instruction is probably advisable. Other than this, a really great school.
