Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Communication is horrible. If I want information I have to call the office. Half the time I call I'm placed on hold while they try to find out the answer. I'm talking about simple things like, are the kids allowed to wear costumes on Halloween. It's the day before Halloween, we should already know! I find the teachers I've dealt with to be the type that just want to clock in and clock out. I STRONGLY disagree with their policy of birthday celebrations for the young grades (no celebration at all for the older students). Grouping everyone together once a month and excluding parents is a horrible policy and does not make me or my child feel part of a school family. They hardly go on trips. They say their primary focus is education but the work my kid is doing is a joke. I am all for strong academics, which they lack anyway, but they're missing the mark with allowing parent involvement (except for the select few) as well as a whole world of educating children outside of reading from a text book.

Good and safe school overall. There is a great family feel. My daughter is happy in the school and it feels like home.

This school is the epitomy of what can go wrong in a public school. Lazy and incapable administration and staff . The entire staff needs a lesson in manners and how to be true professionals, from the administration to the teachers to the school aides. At lunch time the aides all gather round and talk leaving the chidlren to fend for themselves in the mayhem of the cafeteria! They never take the children out to the playground during lunch. The staff is jaded and set in their ways.

PS 2 is a really good school. My son has been going there from kindergarten and he is entering 2nd grade this year. My son's kindergarten and first grade teachers were amazing. It is true they don't go on many trips which I hope will change this year but overall the school is definitely a good one and I am very pleased with my son's education experience so far.

I don't like Ps2Q it is not a good school in many ways. The principal doesn't pay any attention to special ed program there. He doesn't even greet special education parents or children. My son is enrolling the special education program in the school since 2007. The speech service is not good one either. The speech teachers too busy doing everything else but teaching lessons. They only do care about general ed population and don't pay any attention to special ed kids. They forget about the funding they get for special ed children in the school.

I have been involved with P.S. 2 for a very long time. It's a great school with a great family feel. Everyone looks out for one another. The teachers are amazing. They truly care about each child as an individual.

I love PS 2. The staff is excellent. They are super friendly and with a school this big I find it very comforting thst as soon as you walk in the door they staff whoever it msy be knows who you and who your child or children are....And in my case I have 4 and they know each child...by face and name.

This school is overcrowded and inproperly managed. They have cut teachers which are needed. They have a principal, why the need for 2 assistant principals. It just goes to show the principals lack of involvment and inadequacies that he needs 2 individuals for support. Math and reading scores are low, methods of teaching are ineffective and the children pay the price. This is a classis example of how the board of education likes to waste money on an executive level. The teachers and support staff to the school is courteous and genuinely care about the well being of our children. They struggle to do their best to teach and take care of their students with the lack guidance and experience that an effective principal should have.

I find communication between school and parents to be insufficient. Most announcements are given in very short-notice, which hinders my ability to play a more active role in my child's activities.

I am writing in response to the latest parent review. On the contrary, I have found that three of my daughter's past four teachers are exceptional. This year, in fourth grade, Ms. Graham has her students using a wireless computer lab on a regular basis. She is creating powerpoint presentations. She is using the Daily News. I am very content with the education that she is receiving. My only reservation with the school is the principal's lack of involvement. He is the weak link in an otherwise exemplary school

P.S. 2 is a school that is run by people who know how to run things and have been doing so for a long time. You know how you ask a professional a simple question and their response is, well I've been in this business for umpteen years and this is how we do things... P.S. 2 is quite simply - old school. It's clean, efficient and to the point. Get them in, get them ready for the tests and get them out. NEXT! I have found my child's classroom to be uninspired, and messy. His teacher seems worn out as if from another time. I actually feel sorry for her! People have raved about 2 being one of 'the' top elementary schools in Queens. I think some of this is just plain hopefulness and test scores.

I have 2 daughters in PS2 that have been in the school since Kindergarten. PS2 is an exceptional school with excellent teachers. I find the principal and the teachers to be sincerely caring of the children. I wish PS2 went to 8th grade!

This is a great school with only one downfall, the principal. He needs to get more involved with the children and have respect for the parents. He has the parent coordinator do all his dirty work and clean up his mess. She should be principal then the school would be perfect. Its a great school just don't expect anything from him.

Although the school is performing extremely well in the early grades, there is a sharp decline in math and English by 4th and 5th grade. Why is this happening and what is the principal doing to address this issue?

I have a child who is currently attending PS2 and one who has graduated from PS2. I'm very happy with the school. The teachers are great and I have had several meetings with the principal, and he has been very helpful. My experience with all the teachers except one has been exceptional! The parent coordinator is great. They have a wonderful resource program for children who may need extra help. I give them two thumbs up!

The principal of this school is horrible. He has no compassion, no child involvement and doesnt no how to deal with parents. This is my childs 1st year in this school and if wasnt for his teacher I'd be looking to get him out.

I have been very pleased with the quality of the education at PS 2. The staff, starting with the custodian, right on up to the principal, are interested in the overall well-being of all the students and encourage them to do their best. There is great parental involvement between the PTA and various functions they sponser and the parent coordinator and her involvement and availability to the parents. I find it to be a family friendly school. However, it does need more music and arts programs. Maybe some kind of a holiday show or Spring dance would be nice. Other than that, PS 2 is a well rounded environment for K-5th grades!

My daughter has attended PS 2 for the last 4 years and, quite honestly, I've found the school to be outstanding on multiple levels. From kindergarten through to fourth grade she has encountered teachers and staff who have been supportive, encouraging and challenging on an academic and personal level. This school has an extrememly involved PA and a great Parent Coordinator who work with the best interest of the children and school in mind at all times. Mr. Taddeo and Ms. DiFalco are always available to parents although you may need to make an appointment to see them, which, in my opinion, is not unusual as they are administrators & take the running of the school very seriously. I am very glad my daughter has had such a positive experience in her early education as these are the formative years in so many ways. Thanks to all the staff and teachers!

Although I am happy overall with the level of education that my child is receiving, I have found on multiple occasions that the principal is not available to parents. He told me point blank that he receives too many e-mails to be expected to respond to every one. Therefore,I shouldn't bother contacting him. My child's teacher has been absent 6 days already, and it is only November 1st. I anticipate that the quality of education at P.S.2 will decline.

after having my children in 2 different schools this is one of my favorites. It has great parent involvement, my children are learning much more then their other schools. But I must agree that the principal isnt very involved. He forget that they are children. Its your teachers, parents and students that make it such a great school.

My son has gone to PS 2 for 3 years and I have been very pleased with the teachers and staff. There has always been a family feel at the school and I have to admit that Mr. Baxter was the most wonderful that my son has had through his entire school career. His personal attentiveness towards all his students is nothing less than stellar.

As a longtime parent in this school, I think it is a good school with good teachers, The Principal needs serious training in dealing with parents. He is disrespectful and unwelcoming. The PA is strong and very involved and does its best to get the parents involved. The parent coordinator is great.

I think this school is a wonderful school. The principal is a great person and a wonderful administrator. Services are available to students in this school more than other schools. Yes it's true teachers help make the school but without the guide of their administrator it wouldn't be this great. Plus, this school has great parental involvement. keep up the good work.
