ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is good. Teachers are excellent! Only negative experience there was with "Guidance Counselor" at this school, she does want to help the parents at all! It is so hard to talk to her. She does not have normal communication skills! She provided wrong information to us... She does want to listen to what you said. She is sitting there just only in order to collect her Union salary and her Union benefits! She is not going to help you or your child with serious information! This "Guidance Counselor" is worst person in that school!

My child currently goes to this school and I have noticed a very postive change in her. She is more open. She began loosing up. I asked her why. She said, "The gifted and talented program has made me more open because I can accually talk to my friend about what I want to talk about." She also said that "Unlike normal Ed, I have to work hard to get top score. In Normal Ed in my elementary school, I just did what I was supposed to, never studying and getting 100s, to get the highest score." I think my child thinks P.S./I.S. 119Q as a challenge in the Gifted and Talented Program. The Nofication of Saturday School, PTA meetings, Food Drives etc. is terrific. All the teacher are friendly and are willing to help the student if needed help. They have acual Gym Units, Ex. Volleyball. My child comes home everyday with a grin or smile. The principal walks around the school every single day. SHe watches over the kids. Everytime she comes, she takes notes. So, overall I would rate this school a 5+! Hope this helped you! Resourses- My daughter ^_^

As a student in the 119, it seems that the curriculum served here is very limited due to money issues, growing racism, bullying which then in turn, affect self consciousness one needs to provide the hand in hand community for students' grades. Needless to say, this immaturity is the single factor that determines this school's progress. Kids are struggling to learn as they see others pass on and achieve their goals of success. With this occurring daily, one cannot simply say, "I can do this." Its very hard to see this school slowly, but noticably falling apart. However, teachers are another ideal that hold this school in place. They are the tightrope for the "clown" circus actors trying to get across, as the circus actors continue to fool around. Its hard to analyze a school singularly on its students when you have clever teachers to somewhat benefit the school. This schools' teachers help students, and it can truly be seen that they encourage and promote academic success. With continuous ethics to be produced, i hope to see this school be in the top. As it is, this school can really learn from its mistakes. Hopefully, it will be fulfilled with stronger efforts to challenge kids.

I graduated from this school in 2008, and I thought the education quality was excellent, as an honors student I had good teachers and I saw hard work being rewarded. However, a major major problem was bullying, students in my class often bullied myself and others and no discipline was enforced. Halls began to get crowded as the school started bringing in expelled students from other schools, and discipline issues rose. As for applying to high school, counselors were not very helpful and I don't feel I was informed enough about the application process at All.

I am a student at IS 119 and I personally like the school. There is some bullying there but the deans always there to address it. When you first go to that school you will feel that the homework is alot but eventually you get used to it. The teachers there are nice and helpful too. They have good after school activities for everyone and they also have robotics for those in specialized classes.

I'm a student here and I'm a 6th grader I also have a little sister that goes to the school too and is a kindergartener. The teachers are nice if you do listen to them. But other kids are very mean there. I mean, usually it's hard to get friends when there is so much people you hate. I see and hear other teenagers cursing and pushing little kids, being perverts. My little sister even says that teenagers keep pushing her around, and she came home crying. She does learn and loves school. But it's too much for me. The only thing I can do is be good and stay calm. Also this school may give the kids completely challenging homework and tons of it even for the kindergarteners. I don't even get the chance to hang out with my family and I always finish all my homework around midnight from the afternoon. This school is okay, unless your tough.

I am a student here, and I have to say that this isn't such a bad school. The gifted & talented program is great, and if you can, choose it. There are lots of fun activities ie) volleyball, basketball, after-school clubs, robotics. The school is also very convenient. It is to many bus routs, such as the Q29 and the Q47 . The downside is that many teachers are very mean. They will be rude to the students and will even curse at them. However, this is still a great school. If you are selected in the G&T program, then I suggest you go to this school.

due to bullying caused by racism. Unless you are hispanic or a European, do not attend this school. In these cases, your so called "family" is unable to protect you. The principal and deans try to enforce discipline. But many students are way too stubburn, continuously yelling and refusing to obey orders. The principal and deans are then unable to control the students in the school. The environment is not welcoming in the aspect of students. I do not know about non gifted classes, but the teachers of my gifted class hardly yell at us, although i constantly hear instructers screaming at the top of their lungs across the hall. Though I can not stand being seperated from my classmates, the school itself is not pleasant. The instructers need to be repundant on telling non gifted students they are not going to go to specialized high schools. Of course this does not apply to everybody. Actually most people are nice. But personally, i can not wait to graduate and move on with my life. It is not worth it in the case of surroundings. But education is fulfulling. I was finally able to recieve a 4 on the ELA state exam. There is also a 0.7 mile highway seperating the Q 47 bus and the school.

After attending IS 119 for 1 year, I feel compelled to share my thoughts. The school has some amazing teachers who know their stuff. They are funny, smart, and ready to help. However, the teachers are powerless over the appalling administration. Dr. Fagan is one of those people who does things to make herself look good. She has some good initiatives and curriculum ideas, but how about her relation to the students? She is all about discipline and order. The horrendous deans just walk around the entire day, blowing their whistles and screaming through their bullhorns at everyone. They have everyone in fear of committing the slightest infraction. For example, using an iPod in the hallways results in it being confiscated for the day. No big deal, right? WRONG. They will call your parents and have you humiliated for something so minor. Also, the filth in the cafeteria is horrible. You'd think we were in a prison, the way they scream and scream about who's on line and who's not. The entire administration and the old lunch lady hags should eat a meal in these filthy, stinky conditions. All in all. while the teaching is great, don't go here unless you plan to submit to these conditions.

THIS SCHOOL IS HORRIBLE. The gifted and talented program is bad and there are bullys everywhere. The deans, and teachers and principals don't do anything to stop this, it only gets worse and worse. The school is neither challenging at all, if you're thinking about going to this school, then forget it, your district school is better.

As a parent of a gifted and talented student who currently goes to this school I can honestly say that this school is pretty bad when it comes to bullies and ethnic race relations. If you are white and not shy then you are fine. If you are Asian then I suggest you do not go to this school. The principal and the deans are non responsive to your concerns. The response to bullying is yes this happens but so what. It happens that bullying is not suppose to occur. I believe the city has a policy against it but when it comes to the folks at this school they simply turn the other cheek. My son feels everyday that he does not want to go to school. If I could give this school no stars I would. I strongly suggest you look at other programs before going to this school. I agree with the other parents who do not recommend this school.

I don't get how people say that there are SOO many fights, bullies, and trouble with this school i would give it an A++ because they really get u to work hands on projects, and working with chemicals, i havent seen one fight and this is my 2nd year i would DEFINATLY try for the G&t program because they have so many good teachers and even in general ed they help you a lot

I think this school is really good. The school is clean, the food is great and we even got new kindergartners. Dr.Fagen tries really hard to make this school as successful as it can be and I think she is doing a wonderful job at this. Although there is one flaw that I need to point out. In sixth grade I took chorus class, I thought it would be a great opportunity to try to sing but the chorus teacher does NOT know how to teach a class. The chorus class is filled with delinquents which she doesn't know how to handle and spends the entire time screaming at them. I don't think she is a good chorus teacher, she repeats the same old things because she doesn't have anything else planned out and she gives us pointless work?? I tried to to change to band but it was all filled with the kids who knew the chorus teacher wasnt good. Now im stuck :(

My daughter started kindergarten there this year. The program is excellent and the teachers and principal are wonderful. I feel that my daughter will get an excellent education there. The gifted and talented teachers have also been assisting the little ones. So far my daughter is loving the school and excited about learning.

First off I'd like to say that you have to be in either the Gifted or Honors program to have any want to go to this school. Almost off of the children who are in General Ed. or other classes are probably going to grow up to be future convicted felons, if they haven't been already. The atmosphere in the school is welcoming, but only by the staff. Students despise each other and it's disgusting. Seriously. Don't go to the school even if you're in honors, now that I think about it. You have to be in like Gifted to enjoy the experience, but even I was in that class and I despised the school. If you are a child like me, who is a +A student, the school will ruin you completely. Well luckily, I still am intact, but really. It's abhorrent what hate and disgusting aura the school's children carry. It's sad how when you leave somewhere, you should be sad. But I on the contrary am so happy that I only have to stay there two more days. Thank you so much for reading my review, and seriously, don't go. (Unless you're in Gifted, but even there you still get hostile)

I am a parent of an Honors student who is also an 8th grader. I don't know how other students are treated, but my child has received exceptional support from the teachers, counselors and from peers. I am proud to have my child in a middle school that challenges the mind.

Im a senior at IS 119 this year and it's a awesome school. All of my teachers are really nice and they push you to try your hardest. All the people who say that this school is bad haven't seen it on the inside. The atmosphere is friendly and the students do not bully each other. Everybody tries their hardest to keep good scores. All the teachers grade based upon the work you do and how well you do it. They also dont give a lot of homework and they scarcely give tests.

Teachers will not help you thee princpal is helpless. To rap it up i pefer you to go to a different school

My son attends the six grade at this school. I have to say this is the worst school I have ever known. When you call the office a answering machine picks-up. You have to leave a message and when they feel like it they will call you back. The two secretaries are very rude & have no compassion when a parent calls. This schools office has no professionalism.

We are three students currantly attending IS 119. We honestly think that it is te worst school you can go to. No techer treats you with respect and nothing is fair. They base your report card average on houw much they think you do... now how much you try to do. This is a very social school and it has many activities. Like band, dance, theatre, and vocal. The princibal Dr. Fagn is the worst princibal ever. She dons't care about you and she'll get you in trouble with a dean if you don't look at her. But on the other hand 119 is a good school. Not great...but good. I suggest another school. Maybe 73 or 227. Thank you ; Bye.

I am attending thi school for my second year and it was phenominal. I made such great friends and was accepted into the honors program and I definatly recommend this school to parents. Even though the discipline isnt the greatest our new principle in Dr.Fagan is the best principle you can ever have. She has done so much for this school. I really hope all new coming 6th graders would want to register here.

The IS 119 has excellent teaching staff. School needs more discipline. Deans and counselors staff should work more effectively to solve problems. There is a tension among students of different ethnic background, what upper level staff does not want to see. And problems are often stayed unsolved. If your child is shy, excpect big problems in a future in this school. Deans will not help you, believe me!! I rate a half star, just because of efforts of teaching staff.

I am a seniour here at I.S.119 and recently we have aquired a new principal. Dr. Fegan has added things like more pre test before state exames ang goal days where students could practice their individual goals. While many of the after school activities were lost which was a disapointment because they were so new, only put into place last year, the scholl is going over a make over both to the actual building and the teachers and cirriculum. The becan program was added last year and while it is still being acustomed to, many of these students have gotten into specialized high schools, along with the advance math program. The one major downside is that there is a unequal distrobution between the three acadimies. They are the preforming art's academy, the science's academy and humanities academy. Many things are only avalible to the 2 larger groups, preforming arts and sciences.

My daughter is in her senior year here. This is one on the best middle schools in the neighborhood. I feel that my daughter was academically challenged by most of her teachers. The downside is the performing arts academy, many students tried out for a specialized school and many got rejected, letting down high hopes. especially in the drama program, this reflects back to the teacher who everyone calls Mr. B. Overall, my daughter's experiences here were positive one.

I graduated this school in 05'. The school had improved a lot since I was in 6th grade. From what I hear the school is even better. They have great 'SP' classes and great regular classes. The teachers were always wonderful. The principal is amazing in everything she does for that school. You work hard and get good grades as well as being able to socialize with your friends. The changing of classes provides you with experience to what is to come in high school. I love I.S. 119 and if I had a chance to go back there I would give up anything in a second. -Tara

I will graduate from I.S.119 this coming June '06, and I think that the school is wonderful. The school has a friendly atmosphere, and the teachers show that they really care. Although the class sizes are sometimes big, if students try hard enough, they will be placed in a S.P. class(faster learning class). 119 is a great school, and I reccomend it to anyone. 119 has early and late bird sport programs in the Gym for students that want an extra period of Gym. Although there is a teacher shortage, the principal has programs in the morning and the afternoon for struggling students. I wish I was back in the 6th grade...just to experience the wonderful school again!

IS119 gets a raw deal; because there are so many private schools in the area, many parents think that 119 is substandard. The exact opposite is true in many cases; 119 offers accelerated classes for their honors students, and the academics school-wide far surpasses what the private school children receive. 119 graduates are accepted to the catholic high schools of their choices (and many receive full or partial scholarships to these schools). 119 can also boast that many of their graduates are accepted into the Specialized high schools, the Performing Arts high schools, and into honors programs within other NYC high schools. Their academics are rigorous, and the teachers are top-rate. This is definitely a school you must see to believe.

I'm an '05 graduate of I.S. 119. I'm attending Bronx High School of Science this September. I think the teachers at I.S. 119 are wonderful. I think if you are a good student you'll find yourself in the best classes, with the best teachers and have the most opportunities. Although, the downside, is that the SP (Special Program) students tend to have more opportunites and attention than regular student, so if your an average student, you won't get as much out of 119 as a gifted student. If you manage to get into the top 8th grade class, you'll find yourself with the most experienced teachers and teachers who are very concerned with your education. My teachers were the ones who helped me get 100 on my Math A regents and a 96 on my Earth Science Regents. I.S. 119 is the best!

IS 119 is a good school. The students need to be more disciplined. This is a problem that both parents and teachers need to work on. There needs to be a better sense of unity between parents and teachers so that students understand that if they break the rules, they will suffer the consequences. The teachers and principal work hard and the school is very clean.
