Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

P.S.139 is an amazing school. I used to go here, and I remember the faculty and staff was so nice to the students. Never have I pretended to be sick just to miss school, because I was so eager to learn! I miss this school so much. The PTO is also very active.

Barely no enrichment programs opened to all, bully teachers and principal, packed with unreasonable rules. Not to mention bathrooms and cafeteria stink.... This school needs a reform.

This school is horrendous. both of my kids are attending this school because i dont have anymore options, this is the only school near me. i dont see anything positive here, teachers, principal and the rest of the staff are only concerned with their paycheck. no one cares about kids and their education. the positive reviews on this website must be submitted my staff themselves, because all the parents i have talked to hate this school as much as i do. its a shame our children need to live through this for 6 years.

PS139Q is below average when it comes to academics. I agree with some of the comments here: the principal is only concerned about the funding. My son goes to the 'Kapa' program in the school, which is a special class whereby the admittance into the program was recommended by the teacher. So they put their best students together in one class, then the teacher took a month off at the end of last year for 'sick leave' and my son had a whole month of subs with barely any homework. After the teacher came back in Jan, she then took more time off during the day for training. I'm sure the test score for this class will still be above average, but it's certainly not because of the quality of the teachers. If you have kids are that smart and wanted to learn, send him/her to a private school.

I am the parent of two students that attend P.S.139Q. This school receives my highest recommendation and I'll tell you why. All of the teachers at this school are teaching and all students are learning. The principle is completely in charge of everything that happens in the facilely and is a wonderful leader. The thing I like most about her as a leader is that she does not appear to have befriended the teachers and staff under her command. On the contrary, they are her employees and she treats everyone with respect while keeping in mind a job at hand that need to be achieved. That job is teaching the students at P.S.139Q and preparing them for their academic future. If you are thinking to move into the area you have hit the jackpot with P.S.139Q.

Like any public schools, it has some pluses and minuses. I was hoping the school's academics would be stronger, but it's not. With the exception of a few good teachers, I think their faculty needs to be revamped.

All my children have gone to this school and I must say it has gone down the drain over the years the current principle is only concerned about getting funding for the school and is very very rude. The school is only concerned with testing testing and more testing my child has not learned anything it is just so sad this was such a great school before.

Too many kids...my kid is in 3rd grade and there are 31 children in the class. School staffs are helpful but I can't help questioning whether the major focus of the principal is to get a better school ratings or to provide a resourceful and respectful foundation for kids' true learning. I have to confess that I've seen some of the teachers not fully "there" for students or respond to their students without respect or raise voice constantly. I have to admit I decide to write this review since I have a strong doubt if I could recommend this school to anybody. not much enrichment classes nor extra activities and homework is mostly based on printouts throughout all years, not to mention there's not much art nor sports. It may have been good in the pat but definitely needs some improvements in... many areas.

I think this is a good school however you have to be proactive. Also, the math program is very difficult and requires many parents to supplement the work the students get at school. For example, students learn complex math problems but haven't yet had the basics drilled into them. Many of the top students enroll in Mega Academy or Elite so they can compete for Hunter High School. My daughter was bullied - kids demanded her to pay money not to tell the teacher if she did anything bad. The school handled it when I sent a note however I made sure to call on another parent who also sent a note.

PS139 is a phenomenal school. Over the past 6 years, my son has been eager and excited about school and learning. This is a direct reflection of the school's nuturing environment and effective leadership.

The principal is incredibly bureaucratic and unflinchingly does whatever the DOE tells her. However, despite the principal's unwillingness to think for herself, the teachers remain terrific! They find a way to fill out the tons of required paperwork and keep the scores high while still connecting with the kids and bringing some fun into their lives. Thanks to its dedicated teaching staff (and no thanks to the DOE, its constantly changing mandates and its principal) PS 139 is still a great school.

My child could not have gone to a better school than PS 139. If there is a program that a child is interest in and this school does not have they PTA get it done with the Principal assistant. They have wonderful Enrichmond Program. They have a TAG (Talanted and Gifted) class which the students love. If I have a nother child this would be their school.

I graduated from this school and I have to say, it is not as wonderful as the reviews say it is. Some teachers have yelled extensively at their students and the food is horrible. The principle, Mrs. Chosed often does not support a student's side of the story. Many students are involved in fights with each other and smarter kids in the 'kappa' class are always being picked on by the other members of their grade.

I have nothing but good reviews for this school. My child has a wonderful experience in learning because of the teachers-their approach in teaching the kids coupled with their compassion and understanding what the kids needs. The teachers are highly skilled and the school really strives to meet more than expected of them. The afterschool program is great too.

I can't recommend this school enough. If you're child is starting Kindergarten and you get Ms. Talish, you are blessed. She gives a lot of work, but your child will be more than prepared for first grade. It's a wonderful, wonderful school.

P.S. 139 is overall a great school. The teachers of here are highly skilled and they really care for your child. They work with the parents and student to bring the best out of a child. More choices on extra-curricular activities would be welcome, however.

PS139 is a great school; I have a son in first grade and I could not be happier. The school concentrates a great deal on literacy and has great programs in place for all learning levels, and the teachers are first-rate. We are currently in the process of getting extracurricular activities in place, so stay tuned. I must say one of the greatest things about PS139 is the attitude the school has toward the parents - we are always welcome in the school. At any given time, you can find parents all over the school, whether we are volunteering or having our monthly meeting run by the Parent Coordinator, parents are welcome with open arms there. It is a great feeling.

My child attended The Rego Park School for 5th and 6th grades and did very well. The school is extremely mixed as far as race and nationality yet I found this to be one of the schools greatest assets. The administration and teachers are extremely caring and competent always taking the time to address parents' and children's concerns.
