Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I was a student at the Academy of American studies until sophomore year. The school spirit is strong and also the school has so many events through the year. There are indeed some students which are trouble makers but all schools has its flaws. But mostly all of the students there are great. You can have more freedom to go around during study hall and grab a meal at the near grocery. The basketball team is great also the coach is a really nice person u will enjoy it

teachers are tough graders and bullying goes around a lot especially if your black . School is interested in sports having a lot of sports teams. There are a few trouble makers in the school and gossip gets around fast since theres not as many students.

It's a small school where everyone knows each other . Most of the teacher are really great such as Ms Jaffe, she's not a teacher only. The way she teaches you is just inspiring, she teaches about the meaning of life, the world, people. Mrs Greenspam she makes boring biology as interesting as a fiction book. Ms Toro, she is not only a teacher but she is your friend. It's really a great school.

If I could give a 0 star rating, I would. This school has very unprofessional staff, almost no choices in elective classes, poor facilities, and is extremely overcrowded. They brag a good reputation for American history while neglecting science and math classes with very poor staff in those areas, no science labs, even some humanities teachers are not good. If you have an issue with a teacher mistreating you here- good luck. Because there is nobody to complain to either. Staff acts like this school is all that when it is not, going here robs a student of a high school experience and does NOT prepare them for college. Facilities are a nightmare and a fire hazard, classes are held in extremely cramped classrooms and during passing, hallways are a nightmare. This school brags maybe three teachers who actually know what they are doing and are qualified while the rest are rude, unprofessional, and inexperienced. There is a lot of favoritism that occurs in this school from multiple staff members amongst other unfair things. DO NOT go here, you will regret it! This school gets away with countless violations somehow, and it is at the expense of students. I am glad to have graduated.

There are no word to express the dedication and professionalism and enthusiasm of everyone at the Academy of American Studies, from the staff/administrators and students. All who visit the school are welcomed with open arms. My son, this might sound a little strange, can wait for the summer to be over so that he can go back to the Academy of American Studies, where he has made wonderful new friends in every grade in the school.

I can't say enough about this school. I am a former student, and I have nothing but good memories of the time I spent there. The teachers are amazing, and the atmosphere is welcoming. One really feels apart of a family there, not to mention that the education I received there really gave me the tools I needed for college. I feel so much more prepared and ready for anything college will throw at me thanks to everything I learned at the Academy. Just thinking about it makes me wish for my high school days.

I think what is really nice about the Academy is that it is a small school and you can really get to know everybody and the teachers really care about you, and try to get to know you as a person. I enjoyed my time in Academy, because it helped me to prepare for college. Many of my college classmates do not even know many of the things I have learned from high school. I am an Austrian Teacher who was lucky to teach at the Academy for 3 years as a Science Teacher. With me hundreds of other Austrians came to NYC. We met weekly and talked about our experiences. I am now back in Austria and still tell my classes about my wonderful experience in this school. I ve had the time of life!

This school really made me discover my personality. I was always insecure and still am, however, everyone in the school was so outgoing. I took a personal closeness to the assistant principle since I was in the theatre club. I was able to discover my love for acting and here I am now, acting in plays in college and writing scripts. I learned perfect French in this school and I'm also a history buff. I love traveling and I thank a higher being everyday for the oppurtunities Academy gave us with school field trips and etc.

Although my son David has only just begun attending Academy of American Studies I am delighted that we chose it and that they chose him. David attended Solomon Schechter School of Queens, a conservative Jewish day school for the last 9 years. I was nervous about his transition to public school. Having said that I have to say that the Academy is the closest you can get to having a private school experience in the NYC public school system. There are approximately 625 students which makes the learning environment a more intimate setting. Apparently everyone knows everyone else within a short time. I love that David is receiving a private school quality education with the added advantages of it being a diverse community. I am sure David will be nurtured and enriched at the Academy of American Studies. We look forward to the next 4 years

I feel as though my son's classes are really a great hodge podge of required classes as well as classes that interest him. School spirit at Academy of American Studies is always highlighted. The cherry on top is really the wonderful and frequent trips the students are offered. I have been a part of the Academy since it was created in 1996. The focus of the teachers and the caring and concern of the school community makes this the best place for learning to happen. Our little school that could--and does, also affords me the opportunity to bring theatre education to our students through grants, plays, Improv and links to the New York State Theatre Education Association. Our 1000+ alumni continue to keep in touch telling us that because of the Academy, they were prepared for college and beyond. GO EAGLES!

This is a very small school with 500 students, major in American History. I'm currently a sophomore at the Academy of American Studies. So far, this school is great, a lot of school and homework as much as townsend Harris. You see subject teacher three times a week. Academy of American Studies is considered as the second best high school in Queens behind Townsend Harris. Also, top ten hot school in the city. Our graduation rate is 88.9 percent. The relationship between students and teachers are close units. You can talk to them about anything and they care about you and your future. We have basketball and volleyball teams that are very good and active. We share the building with newcomers which is a very good high school for new immigrants. Academy and Newcomers have this program called the Unity program where students from both schools talk about issues that happen in the school and try to make two schools unite as one huge community. Academy of American Studies has a very active student government. Student gov't has sponsored many fun events such as spirit days. Also, the school offers two class trips a year. At the end of the school year, two freshmen will be selected to take college course at Cambridge University in England over the summer for free. Personally, i like this school a lot. It makes me feel like this is a school i belong. At first, i hated this school because it's so small. Now, I like this school because all the teachers here are like your friends, and parents who sometimes give adivce better that your own parents. Although, I have a lot of work but it's good to be a student at the Academy of American Studies.
