Athena Middle school is awesome. My daughter has needed a lot of accomodations and they were so wonderful to work with. Athena Middle School has an excellent music department and performs outstanding plays each year.

I love this place its amazing. It has the top music and the most beautiful structure. And nicer people than other schools. Its had the most famous moments, j-mac, the president and unbelievable productions. Yay for Athena!

My son has had a great experience at this school. Caring, creative teachers who are willing to provide extra help when needed, accelerated classes, excellent music program, school musical with over 200 kids involved, club and community service opportunities, intramurals, sports. A climate committee has made some positive changes with regard to school behavior during the past year such as a tighter dress code, respect issues, lunchroom behavior, safety issues, etc. Like any school, improvements can always be made..but generally, this is a very good school which is also getting better over time. Once the contruction is complete this year, we will finally have an auditorium which will be enjoyed by the entire community and improvements such as a new reading lab and technology upgrades.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
