This will be my sons third year at YATES. And we love it. Almost all of the teachers are excellent. The halls are orderly and the students are friendly and well behaved.

The chaos in the school is alarming. The one effective program in the school, the federally funded pre-k program, was cancelled and the funds used to create 2 part time pre-k classes that don' t hold a candle to the content of the full time program. A failing school too shortsighted to realize that preparing them early would help. The principal only wants imput from people who agree with her. I've pulled my kids out this year and I've run into 4 parents from their class who are pulling theirs out (4 out of 4!) next year. Children running through the halls, sitting all over the stairs at the entrance without teachers present was the norm. This is an arts magnet school with only one teacher with an Arts in education degree and hers was the pre-k program they cancelled!

The quality of education appears to be allright but the states test scores tells differenrtly they seem to be lacking up to 15% in english and math skills. The state has not identified this school as a school in need of help? why not. So far our childs teaching seems to be alright but as the years go by it seems to be getting harder to stay focused on school work. She has been offered a place in the after school reading program and is doing well there. It seems that some teachers want the childern to succed and others just want them to pass. The teachers should not be there for a job but for our childern our future.

Yates Magnet School is a rewarding experience for the children that attend it. The school prepares its students for positive interaction and ideal citizen conduct for their coming years. Overall, the students might enjoy a richer education experience if foriegn language courses were to be implemented into the curriculum.

This school is happy and upbeat. It could have a better curriculum. More field trips definitely needed and more parent involvement. I believe all this school has to do is ask. Parents have a responsiblity to help their children succeed. Most of us want to do anything we can, just need help on how.
