I think the school can be better if the curriculum is provided to parents on an ongoing basis for all subjects. Parents need to be aware of what their students are learning on a weekly basis in order to provide assistance at home. Children do not grasp everything in the classroom and parents can help to reinforce at home when the information is provided.

Northern Parkway School has been great for my child. He really loves his teacher and the school offers lots of different opportunities for my son including band, art, clubs, and tutoring. The administration and teachers have been really supportive and have answered all my questions.

Northern Parkway School can improve by providing parents with more information on the curriculum their children are studying.

My daughter is a new student at Northern Parkway Elementary School. I've come to learn that the school has a new Principal, Ms. Smith. I am looking forward to wonderful things that Ms. Smith will bring in her new appointed office. I believe she brings a fresh new approach to learning and that the faculty and district board alike are excited to see what changes will come over the next year. I, as well as many other parents in the community are excited about this school year. I for one will be keeping my prayers in line for Ms. Smith and Northern Parkway Elementary School. Let's make this a fantastic year.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
