Valley Cottage School

Both my children graduated from VCE and were more than prepared for Nyack Middle School and now Nyack High school both socially and academically. The staff and administration genuinely care about the kids and their education. I can't imagine a better place to be a kid. Like another parent said some of the discipline tactics are a bit too traditional for me.. I have lived in this area for 6 years and would highly recommend the Nyack School District a very racially, ethnically, and economically diverse place with lots of opportunities for all. Great emphasis on building solid reading and social skills. Has a Spanish program which teaches children a foreign language starting at Grade 1. Active PTA program.

The VC Elementary School has been great for my son. We are very happy he loves the school and the teachers, principal, etc. and gets involved in what he can. The principal makes sure she knows all the kids and gives all words of encouragement, etc. The academic programs are first rate and all the extracurricular activities are readily available and have the most wonderful teachers running the programs. All of the teachers we have met (my sons teachers and from other grades and programs) have been wonderful and always available to talk to and encourage us to be involved, and our son to always do the best he can and know that as long as he does that, he is 'ahead of the game'. I would recommend this school to anyone who is in our area and has children ready for school.

Academically, the literacy programs at this school are excellent. Children with advanced skills are recognised and challenged. The arts program is also wonderful. Mrs. Mahan is turning out little Picassos like mad! Parent involvement is high. Overall, I have been very happy with my daughter's education. I think the school needs improving in the area of discipline, although some parents find the strictness a good thing. I would prefer to see a kinder approach in some instances, and this is also my daughter's only complaint.I am very happy we chose this area and would recommend Nyack schools highly.
