We love being a part of the Vance community! The admin and teachers are all dedicated and caring, and we have felt very well heard and cared for when we have had concerns around our son's special needs. There is a great open door policy with parents, and this school does a great job of interacting with and taking advantage of opportunities and resources in the surrounding Asheville community.

As parents we have been very pleased with the experience our daughter has had so far at Vance. I feel like the channels of communication are open there and can get any questions that I might have answered quickly. There is such a sense of community at Vance and I hope that continues. The staff is so open and welcomes parent involvement. We've felt very blessed with Principle Allen has a big heart for children and families. I believe she goes out of her job description to give support to families in need or experiencing a family crisis. I don't think we could ask for more, other than getting an increase from the state budget, but that's another story. I've been involved with the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and they work so hard to provide extra educational and fun programs for after school hours. The Vance Peace Garden is a bonus too. The Garden Coordinator puts her heart and soul into that garden to give the kids an outside classroom. I really can't say anything negative, other than a few things on my wish list would be: Language classes taught while they're young: Spanish, French, etc. Overall, I feel our child is getting a high standard education.

I have not one bad thing to say about Vance. They challenge the students, reward good behavior, and encourage the kids. Speaking from personal experience from k-5, it is truly a great school.

Presently Vance does not have any playground equipment for the kids to play on. The school commumity has taken it upon themselves to raise the money for this project. It may take them some time but the creativity and determination on going about this project is inspiring!

Vance elementary has such a wonderfully beautiful cobb shed house, that was built by our close community/loving parents and students. We have made tremendous improvements in our test scores, attendance and participation. We really need to finish out playgrouds for the children though.

My 7 year old Ella has Juvenile Diabetes and has had the most amazing wonderful teachers manage her care. As a parent of a child who has needs that can be challenging, the staff at Vance has made our life have one less worry - school. I so appreciate all that they do for her every day. The best thing has been their recognition of who Ella is beyond her diabetes. The beginning of each year is always a lot of meetings and trainings of how to manage her daily schedule with insulin and finger pokes, certain provoking some anxiety to all involved, but after that it becomes routine. Her teachers have even told me she is a pleasure to have in class. Wow. Thanks to all her past and future teachers, Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Gaines, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Wilson and now Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Williamson. And a special thanks to Mrs. Sellinger, our principal, who has greeted not just Ella, but every student, by name with a smile every day. She is extraordinary.

I love Vance because I can send my son there knowing that there is an amazing community committed to his best interest. The administration had fostered a sense of caring and community that is incredible. Vance nurtures kids and gives them a connection to the Earth with a large garden the kids plant, harvest and eat out of as well as a table at the local farmers' market. They compost in the cafeteria and are currently working on a water catchment system to use rain water to water the garden and teach kids about building a sustainable future. The teachers at Vance are top notch and bend over backwards to give kids a safe place to learn. We love Vance!

Vance is an awesome neighborhood school with a wonderfully diverse student population and an incredibly talented staff of teachers and administrators. The parent team is very active and enthusiastic as well helping to improve the playground, maintaining a thriving community garden, encouraging and supporting students and staff, and much, much more! My family and I are proud to be a part of this school!

Vance Elementary is an awesome and truly multicultural school. Its teaching staff, administration, and families are considerate of all and not elitist or exclusive. As a NASA Explorer School and magnet theme of Human Diversity and Ecology the climate and breadth of opportunities are remarkable. An extensive garden and outdoor classroom have been planned and maintained by families in the neighborhood. Family nights are well attended, and relate to art shows, music performances, NASA Astronaut visits, summer reading, engineering challenges, and other celebrations always including a meal. Vance achieves this strong sense of community through its accessibility as a neighborhood school in a Magnet System. Many families walk or bicycle to school. The administration is present, involved, and supportive, well prepared to lead this school into the 21st Century.
