I attended James Martin in 6th grade & I am in 11th grade now. The teachers werent TERRIBLE, but they were certainly not good. take it from a student that has actually attended this school: the kids were horrible. if you're child is in anyway "different" or sensitive or EASILY INFLUENCED, don't let your child go here. I was bullied relentlessly because of the way I looked, the way I dressed, the way I acted. I had absolutely no friends at all and the teachers were indifferent. the kids cussed, they were loud & rowdy & sometimes there would be no teacher in the classroom at all and it was just chaos. in no way does this school prepare you for high school. I developed bad habits. the teachers didn't care, nor did they make any attempt to help me. Please, if you're a parent, make the effort to find a GOOD school for your child & not just dump them anywhere. A good school early on will definitely make an impact on how well your child performs in high school and so on. and if you are a teacher, make the effort to help your students. don't just stand & watch them get bullied, be receptive. But until things get better, don't let your child go to James Martin, for their sake. just don't.

James Martin middle is a great middle school . We are moving toward to become legendary . Yes our test scores may not be as good but we are trying to help that but taking rig msl's every week , we retake until we pass this has helped because the eog's are coming up . The teachers are great , they make sure each student is in a comfortable learning environment . An 8th grade teacher recently won student of the year at our school out of our zone . We are taking steps to become legendary .

Out of 30 years of teaching, this school has been the worst experience of my career. A previous review states that "over the past two years bad teachers are no longer a part of this school". That is totally untrue. Most of the teachers left this school because of the principal. And the teachers that left were among the best. Nothing improved, not behavior nor test scores while the principal was in charge. Moral sank to the very bottom.

My daughter is a sixth grader at this school and she absolutely hates it. This will be my childs last year at this school. In all honesty, it's not the teachers, it's the students. My daughter has had many problems with the students but the teachers have been very helpful.

I have been trying to get my child transferred out of this school since before it started. The reason is because of all the bad reviews. I don't think,so far, it's as bad as I read, but there are definately problems. My child hates this school for many reasons...its crazy that they cant wear jackets or coats or carry their backpacks. My child has heard a certain teacher threaten a student several times just because the student was talking. This school isn't even the closest to my home.I'm hoping the school board will approve my request for transfer soon. From things I've read and things I've experienced so far this year, the school still needs lots of improvement.

OK so eveyone is saying that JM is a bad school and teachers dont do anything, and those are all LIES! The school isnt whats bad, its the students who come to school to play, touch people, use profanity, anddo all but learn which makes JM look bad. The teachers at JM work just as hard as the leading teachers in CMS. Then CMS decides to start paying teachers based upon how well their students do on EOGs,which was absurd becasue certain students decide to do what they want when the want and how they want. I attended JM in the 2010-2011 school year and because of all the bad reviews i read i was a little optimistic as to if i should stick the year out or not. But when i saw these teachers in action, believe it or not they work harder than teachers at Smith Academy and they should really be reconized for that. Rigt now i am attending CrestdleMiddle because i moved and i hate it there. Eveeryone is quick to say how good of a school Crestdale is but really all Crestdale has is their ability to rob you of all your money and a couple good reviews. I would much rather attend JMMS than Crestdale anyday. Right nw im tryying to get back in Jm . Its OK go aheAd and send you child to JM!

Over the past two years the school has underwent major changes. Teachers who have behaved in an unbecoming way, are no longer a part of the staff. In fact most of the staff is completely new, in all 23 new teachers this year alone. This does not include the turnover in the administrative / support staff. There is now a deeper focus on customer service and developing students emotionally and educationally. The principal pulled his students out of their home school to demonstrate his faith in the school. He is demanding but fair, and expects all to engage in their child's education. The school requires that teachers provide tutoring hours every week, they stay late for three parent teacher conferences (and hand out report cards on the same night). They do parent university courses and have offered students more options to grow. While the reviews of the school are not stellar, you cannot judge this school, or its staff by previous experiences. The school did not get this way overnight, and it has taken almost 2 years to return to form that people can be proud of; which is evident by the UNCC partnership as well as the TIAA-CREF partnership. Stop by an see the new JMMS.

THIS IS A HORRIBLE SCHOOL, THE TEACHERS CURSE AT THE STUDENTS, THEY CHANGE THEIR CLASSES AND REMOVE THEM FROM HONORS CLASSES WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT, THE PRINCIPAL DOESNT HELP WITH ANYTHING... I AM TAKING MY CHILD OUT OF THIS SCHOOL. THEY SENT MY CHILD HOME IN 35 DEGREE WEATHER WITH NO COAT. THEY DONT LET THE KIDS USE LOCKERS BUT THEY DONT ALLOW COATS IN CLASS. I RATE THIS SCHOOL A ZERO!!! IT'S USELESS AND WE CAN BUILD SOMETHING ELSE IN ITS PLACE...

As a student at jm i feel that the school is unsafe in many wasy. thir standards are degrading. i was the victim of the manjy violents acts that took place. i was in a stituation where three students jumped me and security did nothing to intervene. The teachers and staff at james martin are rude and obnoxious an care nothing about student academics and success.

I do not recommend any parent enrolling their children in this school even if it is the last option. I have not had a lot of dealings with the principal however, the teachers do the best they can with what they have to work with. We are not from NC and did not know any better than to place our children among this poorly rated school. There is a lot of issues with this school that need to be addressed and handled immediately. The children practically run the school and the teachers are the students. Nothing good can come from allowing your child to attend this school. Please seek other options first.

In my honest opinion, I would not recommend anyone to enroll their child into this school. My child has only attended this year and so far there are only ongoing issues verses resolutions. The principal is the poorest excuse for a principal that I have seen in seven years. He does not respond to parents, or problems. My child is in honors courses. The children with behavior problems seem to have more power than the actual teachers or principals. As a result this environment is unsafe. The student's best interest is not at heart at this middle school. I volunteered to help get the PTA started and have not heard a word from anyone. If you have the option to place your child at another school, do it!

I am a former student of James Martin Middle but currently attend Piedmont IB Middle. As someone stated before, I was in the honors courses and made great grades. Parents complain about how James Martin Middle is a school where teachers just yeall and dont teach, students are wild, and the parent involment is poor. Some of the opinons stated are true but James Martin is being changed in greater ways every day. The new prinicipal, Mr. Ayinde Rudolph, i making James Martin a better and safer place for the childrens' education. Every school has there great points and baad points. Piedmont IB isnt the best school in dicipline but the best school in academics. James Martin is in progress for better education and if parents dont think James Martin isnt for there child, then so be it, but James Martin Middle school is a place of excellence and children appreciate that.

My family just transfered here in FEB. This my son's first year of Middle School, and at this point, I am not too happy with this school. I am a very active parent however, it took me to go talk to the principal to get the teachers to respond to me. I am considering tansfering him to another school for the second half of the year.

This is a terrible school and I would say, Parents beware! The teachers and administration are so overly concerned with punitive measures that the academic emphasis is missing. My son relearned everything he learned previously in CA in the sixth grade in James Martin's 7th and 8th grades.

I have been happy with the care and support the teachers have shown my son. He trusts that the teachers are there to teach and explain things to him. He has had to learn that he needs to take more responsibility with school work, and the teachers have been able to hold him accountable in a nice way.

My son recently began attending James Martin ater attending Alexander Middle for his first middle school year. Overall he is happier at James Martin, but I did notice that every day I ask him if he has homework, and just about everyday he tells me no. That surprises me. I also ask him if he has any projects or reports and again th answer is always No. Everytime I visit the school, I hear the same thing, teachers or aides yelling at the top of their lungs at the children which I dont approve of. The student services office need work.

This school needs more parent involvement. Took me three attempts to get sons schedule changed but worth it now he is in AVID and that is all that matters. Takes hard work and dedication in this world. Too many people give up! I am not one of those parents. I have 2 children in this school this year. I also have one at Vance High in Special needs class and know first hand that you need to push until something happens. Also not just be a talker but a participant. Not stand on the sidelines telling everyone what needs to be done. I am pretty pleased with the first 2 years of having a child and now children in this school. Thank you all staff at James Martin Middle your efforts are shown we all need improvements and it take special people to teach our children. Debra B.

It amazes me how we can always find room to judge and belittle others. In a world where the responsibility for learning is placed on the shoulders of the educators, there is no wonder that no one is learning. Learning is an internal process, educators can only teach and facilitate the avenues of learning. They cannot FORCE students to learn. It is a wonder that our parents do not reflect upon what they have taught their children. Values, Respect, Integrity, Honesty, Pride, Commitment and Spirituality are all lacking from the students of JMMS. As an educator at JMMS, it frustrates me that most of the complaints that arise regarding the school come from parents who have children who demonstrate the lowest levels of respect for the learning process. Parents are frustrated because THEY have failed their children moreso than the educators, but its simply easier to blame someone else.

My child has attended this school for 2 years. Within a couple of months I noticed a change for the worst. The teachers appear either nonchalant or afraid. There is no expectancy level from the teachers for the students. The principal seems kind enough but lacks direction and the ability to execute.

It s funny to hear my concern over and over again. My family and I just relocated here and my son has had nothing but troubles. He was taken back as well with how different the kids are or how different the staffs handle situations. I am not very happy with the staff and getting someone to return your phone call is a full time job. Parents really need to take more control of their kids, it s not the responsibility of the staff at JMM, I think that s part of the problem!

Do not send your child to this school!!! just as some of the other parents said, we too are recents transplants to charlotte. Our child has never had any problems with peers before this school. She hardly ever has homework. She doesn't even have a math book. The administration is less than desirable from our experience(on her first day) the violence is unbelieveable. To make a long story short, we will be moving this summer to a better school district!

We just moved to Charlotte from Phoenix and I was shocked that this school doesn't even provide a math book for my seventh grader. Furthermore, he can't even take his workbook home. His homework isn't graded and we have no idea if he's making any progress. The teachers seem to be trying to help, but they spend more time disciplining the kids than teaching. Please help me find an alternative. I'm ready to move out of this district immediately or place my child in a private school.

The staff is good, the extracurricular activities are great and the school is trying very hard to improve the safety, but what the heck is going on with the lunch prices? In order for your child to get a nutritious meal, the parent has to pay approximately $5.00 per child/per day. With my two children in this school, I am paying $50.00 a week for lunch. Is the school board aware of this? Because we are new to the system, I gave my kids $2.00 a piece on the first day (which is what the pamphlet says). They had fries and a drink for lunch. Without a good meal, you cannot learn. These ridiculous prices need to be amended in a major way!

Like the previous parents said, the racial bullying at this school, and bullying in general is a big problem. The students behave wildly, the teachers have given up and don't seem to care, or they know there's nothing they can do. There is an tremendous amount of violence at this school, and the school is overpopulated. The only thing I can say that is positive about this school is that the Principal is good. He tries his best to make James Martin a good school, he can't do too much when the students in general don't feel comfortable in their environment! This scool is like a lock down for our children - not an environment for learning! We just moved here and I've pulled my student out of this school and put him in a private school where he's in a safe environment and is not scared everyday at school.

January 06, 2005
As you can see, this school is really overcrowded. I don't see how they expect my child to get an education with that many people in the school! The reason why there are so many behavior problems is because of it's population problem. But besides that fact, the teachers here are horrible! My child is forever complaining about how the teachers handle situations badly and stereotype a lot of the kids(but not her personally). My daughter comes home every afternoon and when asked what she learned in school, it's hardly ever anything new because of teachers' inability to teach and behavior among her peers.

Like the previous parent said, the racial bullying at this school, and bullying in general is a big problem. The students behave wildly, the teachers have given up and dont seem to care anymore, my daughter has yet to take a field trip and I havent heard about any plans to do so this year, there is an unrealistic amount of violence at this school, and the school is overpopulated. The only thing I can say that is positive about this school is that the Principal is good. He tries his best to make James Martin a good school, but hey, you cant do too much when the students neither their parents dont seem to care about their education! My daughter has gone from a scholar student, to failing 2 of her classes! She feels very discouraged by her teachers and peers education wise. I dont recommend this school to anybody!

We recently moved here from out-of-state. The racial bullying at this school is absolutely horrible. We have had nothing, but problems. We have taken our concern to the administration, who have tried to handle it. However, my child every day faces some sort of racial bullying. Advise to parents who are moving into this school district -- don't enroll your child into this school. On top of all everything, the academics are horrible. The teachers try to teach, but the students totally out of control.
