It seems like the last few reviews were written by teachers or parents that were asked for a review. The truth is, this school is not for everyone. It is very cliquish. Once you have a problem with one teacher, it gets passed on to the next and follows your kid from grade to grade. Very immature staff in the lower grades. (I can't vouch for the older grades) The principle is no help in this situation.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective
July 14, 2015
Teachers make a world of difference in their students lives because they are with them at least 7 hours a day...more than most working parents see their children. I am glad to say that the teachers at Long Creek Elementary do an excellent job of effectively teaching, training, exhorting, and encouraging our students!

Their reading and comprehension teachers are fabulous. My son didn't like to read before he came to this school. He was encouraged to read, to take his time, and to keep trying, that coupled with reinforcements from home has made him a better reader.

The Fred Carr award plays a huge factor in this! Long Creek celebrates their students who respect others and themselves and encourages others students to do the same.

There is a sense of family at this school...which is a rare find now-a-days. The teachers, and staff enforce fairness by teaching students to share and to think of others in their decision-making. Also, during test time their encourage students to do their own work and abide by the honor system, which because they are treated fairly and with respect, they do.

One word to describe this school and it's staff...Outstanding. Mrs. Swint in the front office is amazing...the nurse to the principals are very professional and attentive to student needs. I really enjoy the family atmosphere and cohesiveness of this school. They had a PTO staff that is second to none, who makes sure that our children's fundraisers are exciting and done in excellence. I am very picky and particular when it comes to where my boys attend school. When we moved to this school district from another, I went online and read the reviews. We came from a very popular and top ranked school so my expectations were very high. I am glad to say that the teachers and staff surpassed my expectations. From Pre-K to 5th grade, you won't be disappointed. I read the other reviews about the bullying and was very SHOCKED. I honestly can't imagine the principal and teachers not caring. They are concerned about EVERY student. And as for Mrs. Simpson, my children and my family thinks that she is a Rockstar! She is out in the carpool lines in the mornings and in the evenings welcoming parents to ask questions and to sit in classrooms. My rating is 100% in favor of this school. Clean and safe environment, fun atmosphere, conducive to learning and growing with rewarding opportunities in music and after-school clubs. My opinion is of my personal experience, and I know plenty of other families that love this school. My advice is to go visit for yourself...you'll be glad that you did!

Long Creek is one of the best schools my children have ever attended. The moment you enter the building you are treated with respect by all staff. The building is always clean and most importantly, safe and secure. My children's teachers and I keep in constant communication. I make sure to check the parent portal for grades. This ensures that there are no "surprises" at the end of the semester. I believe it is our responsibility as parents to stay on top of our children's work. Stop blaming teachers for not informing us of their progress when the resources to help us stay informed are readily available.

So my son was wrote up, not to add, he had to sit in the office all day long, again he is only in Kindergarten, but he was overly punished for defending himself.I have been fighting this since Friday because I told them after what happened last month I was afraid they would retaliate or pick on my child because I am a vocal parent and that is exactly what happened. I have been told lie after lie, excuse after excuse and to top it off they don't care. I have been given the run around all because I want an acceptable explanation as to Why you would write up a child in Kindergarten for only defending himself, and over punish him when he has been pushed around all year and you guys did nothing to those children. I am telling you do not take your child to this school. If you are not one of the parents in their little "it squad" of people they know and like or if you are a vocal parent they will treat your child unfairly. Right now I am trying to figure out in the last semester how to transfer my son to another school because I do not trust them and scared of what they will do to him. And no one cares. Please try to put your child in private school. Please

Since Mr. Thomas left and Ms. Simpson took over as principal, this school has gone downhill. The uniforms are very sloppy and the staff is extremely underclass. Teachers do not communicate with parents, no notes, parent teacher conferences, letters, emails, phone calls, nor writing in planners to let you know of grades slipping. The teacher will apologize and promise to not do that again for the next quarter, and then another bad grade is received on the report card. The will defend the bullies at this school if their parents look pitiful enough.

To say we had a horrible experience at this school would be an understatement. From the Principal to the school nurse, just awful. I sat in the lobby and watched a child be put off for 15 min in the nurses office while she(the nurse) carried on a personal conversation with her grown daughter regarding an energy bill and how she was upset by her daughters treatment of her. Totally inappropriate. My child was bullied at this school also and the administration was completely uninterested. My child was shamed by a teacher in front of the entire class. Not a good way to teach. I have heard from others that once upon a time this school was very good. Not true any longer. I would advise anyone considering moving into this school district to think again.

Long Creek is an excellent school! Last year was our families first year and I can truly say that the teachers are nurturing and the school atmosphere is warm and inviting! I have a son that's a rising third grader and he can't wait to get back to school! That says so much about the environment and the staff there! Looking forward to an awesome school year!

Long Creek is a gem. The communication with parents is great with a monthly school wide news letter, monthly class news letters and weekly emails from teachers. Children learning abilities are treated individually. We are blessed to be in this school district.

I do not recommend this school to anyone until Ms. Simpson is gone. We had to take our son out of Long Creek and put him in private because of some bullying. Teacher and Ms. Simpson did nothing to resolve the problem. Extremely unhappy, this school is not what it was just a few years ago. It's going down hill real fast.

Wonderful community school! Ms. Simpson the new principal is extremely involved and visible. The staff and teachers all seem to be dedicated to the success of each and every child. My daughter is happy and loves going to school everyday and that makes me feel great!

My children attend this school. We move to NC about 2 years now and I have been please with the education they have rcv'd here. Mr. Thomas is very involved and you always see him throughout the school. The teachers allow you to come in and observe as well as assist if you would like in the small group sessions. Ms. Y. Bonaparte the school counselor is excellent as well as the office staff. I could not be more pleased with Long Creek.

Long Creek Elementary has excellent, involved and caring teachers. They are far and above a better choice of teachers than given credit. The faculty/staff are very good about developing and instilling strong character and responsibility within the students.

Due to the leadership of the principal, this school is an awsome learning facility and has increased its test scores trememdously in just a short period of time. I would definitely recommend this school.

The principal is very hands on, he get directly involved in the the goings on of the school. I have rarely see him in his office he is always interacting with parents, teachers and students. I like how involved he is. He takes his job to heart and gives his all. The teachers follow his lead and the rest of the staff is very accomodateing as well as friendly.

My son is in kindergarten this year and it has been a wonderful experience. We have been very please with his teachers and the administration. The new principal seems very excited about the future of our school. As an added bonus we will be getting a new building in 2009!

Our kids have been at Long Creek for their entire elementary years. We have had a lot of leadership change, but are finally settling in to a fantastic year with a great new principal. The teachers seem happier to be at school and the kids are more excited than they have been in years about going to school. The way classes are grouped in 3-5 really meets the needs of all children, high and low. Long Creek has regained a lot of parent participation and enthusiasm this year. Go Mustangs!

The curriculum standard is set fairly low here although if you are an involved parent you can find additional ways to challenge your child. The fact that children are not allowed to truly celebrate holidays at school also contributes to very low parent participation. The school looks extemely dilapidated. I don't think the principal has done enough to fight for desperately needed structural improvements. There is not a satisfactory gym or place to have student presentations. On the brighter side the kids seem well behaved and the school is genuinely focused on developing the whole child.

I have only wonderful things to say about the teachers and principal. They encourage the children to do their absolute best and it shows in the school's improving EOG scores.

Great neighborhood school. It's small enough for the students and parents to feel a sense of 'family' at the school. Awesome Principal, which leads to great faculty and morale. Old school is charming and safe. Same curriculum taught here as in all CMS schools. Nicely diverse student population. Students well prepared for middle school. Getting a little overcrowded, but still manageable.

Awesome school! Small school allows for a 'family atmosphere' at many gatherings. Teachers are focused and have high expectations of the students. My daughters teacher teaches 'to mastery', which means that no matter how they 'rank' in the class, they can all improve on something. This is an 'open' school, which means parents are encouraged to visit school often, whether it be for conferences or simply to have lunch with their child. Principal is professional and fair, yet warm to the students.

Morale of students at this school are low due to teachers being overbearing. Short lunches are often taken in silence and holiday parties are allowed to be taken away for consequences for minor incidents (such as forgetting to bring your reading record to school.) Parent involvement is not encouraged.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
