Attended the new family tour this week and the Principal was so kind. She answered everyone s questions and we were all very impressed by her professionalism and knowledge of instruction. We are excited to become Wildcats!

My family has had a positive experience at Weddington. Upon moving here, we met with the Principal and she was very welcoming and informative. She has a solid handle on instruction and that made us feel at ease. Having one student that excels and one student that requires academic support, we have a positive relationship with the Assistant Principal. She is caring, energetic and answered ALL of our questions about how to best support our child. She assured us that the educational resources at Weddington would fit our child s needs and she was correct. The Assistant Principal attends our IEP meetings, is very knowledgeable in the resources provided and has made our child s year a success. Teachers are energetic and committed to helping the kids be successful. My children s teachers communicate regularly and I appreciate the time they spend to keep us in the loop . When I volunteer or come for lunch, the office staff is kind and very upbeat. The school may be older but it is well organized. I hope that the playground equipment is updated soon and more is added.

We heard great reviews regarding WDES. Unfortunately, this has not been our experience. The administration is poor as both the assistant principal and principal are lacking in relational and effective communication skills as it relates to the parents. There are indeed quality teacher's and assistant teachers at this school; however, they are numbered. For those teachers that need supervision and re-training, reports made to the administration regarding the lack of appropriateness by part of those teachers is of no avail. These poorly functioning teachers continue to function in their poor capacity. Moreover, there are some serious confidentiality concerns that need to be addressed at this school. I have found the administration and especially the staff discussing the lives of children within the hallways and front office. It is embarrassing.

This school is a disaster because of the principal. She does not listen to parent feedback, thinks she knows what is best even though she only has 2-3 years teaching experience, is incredibly stubborn, and has no idea what is going on in the classrooms. She doesn't require lesson plans from teachers, which means they do what they want (which may include nothing). There is no consistency between different classes in the same grade. She hedges questions and won't answer anything directly. If you have a gifted child - forget it. They don't read, they don't do vocabulary, they do far less than the regular classrooms. Although this has been an issue for 2 years now-it's not addressed. For those being switched FROM this school with the redistricting - they are jumping for joy. This school was great until the current principal started running it. It is impossible for me to believe this is the number 6 school in the state based on current practices. This school TEACHES TO THE TEST - that's how they get high test scores. You often even hear teachers say "that's not on the EOGs". STAY AWAY from this school unless you want high test scores with no real learning behind it!!!

We moved into this school district because we read all the reviews of Weddington Elementary being an "award winning" school. So far, the only reason I can see that they win awards is because they teach the kids how to test, and that is about it. If your child is in the median, they will do just fine. If they are above or below the median, they suffer. I have seen some poor decision making on the administration side without consulting parents, as well as a complete lack of communication between administration and staff, causing administration to fumble for an excuse for their mistakes instead of owning up. The academics are mediocre, at best. There is a lawsuit between the school board and the county, that is in the appeal process, with $92M in unanswered funding which the county refuses to pay. This hurts the school, the children, and the academics. The gym has leaks that they can't fix, which is dangerous for the students. Overall, I am disheartened to see that this school has a 10 rating only to find out that they are more like a 7. Luckily, there is a lot of parent involvement to put a positive vibe into the school. Otherwise, it would be a pretty drab atmosphere.

My daughter has attended this elementary school for kindergarten and now first grade. She loves the school, the teachers and the faculty. Each and every one of the teachers are caring and supportive. They KNOW my daughter. Her first grade teacher is VERY in tune with her emotional and mental state and its incredibly reassuring to know my daughter is well cared for and is getting the best education at a highly regarded school.

Weddington Elementary is an amazing school! The teachers and parents go above and beyond every day. They care about ALL the students not just their own. My 4th grader loves to go to school and my 4 year old can't wait to be in kindergarten next year. Keep up the good work WDES!

WDES is a great school! The teachers and staff go above and beyond to allow our children to grow and learn as individuals. The parents help make that happen!

This is by far the best place around for students to learn and grow. Teachers work hard to make sure that each student's needs are met. The principal is visible, strategic, and communicates consistently. I feel confident in sending my child to Weddington Elementary!

I am so impressed with Weddington Elementary School. My eldest daughter is a kindgartener and this is my first experience with Weddington's public school system. Prior to the school year Principal Blanchard hosted all kindergarten parents and introduced us to the school's approach, she's outside every morning to greet students, and present at every non-school-hour event. She really cares about her students and it shows. The teachers are equally impressive. They have gone out of their way to keep us involved and informed in our daughter's education. We've received personalized emails with updates and have had open dialog about her progress. My daughter regularly receives friendly encouragement and adores her teacher. I am so pleased with Weddington Elementary School and am really glad that this is where my daughter's education has begun.

We moved to this school 2 years ago and we were warmly welcomed into the weddington family. We have attended 4 different elementary schools because of moving, and although all schools were wonderful, this one is definitely the best. The staff is very helpful and kind, they encourage and appreciate parental involvement. The interactions I have had with my children's teachers has always been positive. The principal is very involved and loving towards the children. My children are really happy at WDES, and I'm grateful for that!

We have a 2nd Grader who has had an excellent experience at Weddington Elementary thus far. He came into kindergarten needing services out of preschool from prior evaluations; and we felt he was borderline on no longer needing OT. In kindergarten, team decided to discontinue services. His kindergarten teacher was awesome, as was 1st grade. He finished first grade reading at end-of-2nd-grade expectation; largely due to the teachers keeping him challenged. Principal seems focused on academic growth and individual achievement, so at times it seems like the BEST students may get a little less attention to fly higher than the struggling students to achieve expectation. But that's also considering on-going budget cuts throughout the district and state, so it makes sense that's probably the better imbalance to have. Parents are very involved, and welcomed to be involved. Couldn't ask for a better public school.

I cannot say enough about the entire staff at WDES. My children came from overseas, and they have been at WDES for three years, and I cannot say one bad thing about the school, its teachers, cafeteria staff, etcetera. It in essence is a "private school" and we look forward to every year. We thank you all at WDES and Union County for a superb job.

Weddington Elementary School is a wonderful place for children to learn and grow. The principal, staff, and teachers demonstrate not only a desire for excellence, but also, care and concern for the total well-being of each child. This school is located in a community where parents desire the best education for their children, and that desire is reflected in the level of parental involvement in the school. Reading some of the reviews from 2010 and 2011 increased my concern about the quality of the education my children would receive, however, my concerns have been completely allayed after interacting with the teachers and the new principal, Mrs. Blanchard.

Awesome teacher - awful principal. Our experience with this Weddington principal has been horrific. She has no people skills and is on a power trip. Parents are owed no respect or time. Overrides parents' judgment without even a conversation. Terrible attitude. Don't send your child to school with a cut, scrape or bruise. She'll report you to the Dept of Social Services. Dangerous individual in a position of power.

Our child has special needs and attends WDES. Our experience with his teachers, the administration and the supporting staff for special needs has been outstanding. Ms. Kassle, the Principle, has shown direct involvement with our child's needs and has gone above and beyond to make a difference. His teacher proactively communicates with us and has made our child's' learning experience very positive. In addition, we are actively engaged as parents with the school and the staff as partners in the educational process. It makes a measurable difference in the learning experience. To the other parents expressing reservations... perhaps you should reevaluate your approach and process to learning. An open mind, effective two-way communication and a shared goal for educational excellence is the key to success for our children. WDES is an excellent example of this in action!

This school is horrile! From administration to the teachers no one cares. The teachers are unfriendly and careless. Most of the staff bad mouth parents, and do not respect parents. Adminstration is far worse, no accountability from the school system allows the staff to bully parents and students. I am like many parents on here just fed up WDES. When will someone care and remove all the bad apples from their jobs. WDES use to have great teachers, they have all quit, due to the mess that has been made since WDES got a new principal.

As a parent, we work hard in encouraging our children to enjoy school and learn from others. My child attends this school and thus far not impressed. The teachers attitudes lack excitement and believe the principal is doing very little to weed out those teachers who are just biding their time . While they are certified teachers I believe they still should teach and inspire children not give constant criticism where other students can over hear. I agree with the prior posting the school admin gives of a very negative vibe to parents. Plus I feel the school is too concerned about their test scores vs relationships with teacher/student/parent.

We have been at Weddington Elem. for a couple of years now. The teaches are great but are handicapped by the school's administration. The 08-09 WDES Administration emits a very negative environment and are demeaning to parents and staff. Many of the staff and parents 'avoid' contact as much as possible with the school's administration. Capital contributions are very small - shows the heart of the community towards this school! We can't wait to be free of WDES! In spite of the poor administration, the teachers have great hearts.

My child is at Weddington and we are unimpressed thus far. The first semester has passed and we can't say he learned one new skill or task. He is at the top of his class but no challenging work is given. The class does alot of peer groups. I don't feel like another student has the ability to teach academics. The classrooms are large with little relief from teacher assistants. Good test scores don't necessarily mean a great school. If Weddington suppose to be top notch, I wouldn't want to see the other schools here in Union County. How sad for our children.

The good news about this school is that it has good test scores. The bad news is that test scores are the only aspect of your child that is valued at this school. Your child will be an expert at testing and scantrons upon graduation as this is what he/she will do for much of the year and for 3 solid months in the spring preparing for the EOG's.

Great school with caring teachers and involved parents that delivers fantastic academic results. It doesn't get any better than this. We'd like to move closer to work, but can't bear to leave this school system. We (parents) went to private school growing up, but think this public school is A+.
