I think Nelsonville York is a great school system, I think kids are tought very well and go on to do great things in the world. I am a graduate of NY as well as my husband, we are also both college grads. Our son is in 5th grade has been on Merit Honor Roll every year and is also in the tag program. We did move away for a bit, but returned finding that NY was more advanced than the other school he was attending. As for the football stadium being built that money was in most part donated by a local business and you cannot tell people what to do with their personal money. And we may be a smaller district so that does limit the extras we have, you cant have everything if you dont have they numbers to support it. And we may not have all the money in the worl either but thats an issue that our State Gov needs to deal with! I am very happy with our school. I love that the teachers know the kids they know the parents and they are always there whne you need them..

I have to agree. I have lived in Nelsonville my whole life, went all through school there, as did my parents, and now my own kids. Nelsonville is a nice place to live, I feel safe here, and I feel my kids are safe here. As for the school district, my son is in 1st, and all the teachers are very nice and helpful. However, I do know that once in high school, their focus is on football, and the state championship. I've seen teachers give athletes a passing grade just so they could play. This teaches them that academics are not important, and I've seen many boys graduate and basically just fall apart out in the real world, especially if they go to college. I have seen some positive changes, but they still have a ways to go if they truly want to put the focus back on academics.

I agree with the previous parents that the emphasis is clearly on sports. Although sports are an important part of school, being a student should always come first. The district has made some headway in curriculum in the last several years but still lags behing many school districts. The tag program was just started a couple of years ago and last year was our first year involved in model UN. The elementary is a complete mess whereas the middle and high school are much more professional and focused. Some of our children have difficulty when taking standardized testing (i.e. SAT/ACT etc.) even though they are in the top of their class. This would reflect some problems with curriculum. And as far as the new buildings--notice which came first--the football field and weight room. I think this speaks for itself.

I totally disagree. We are getting new/updated buildings. My daughter is in the TAG program and just participated in Model UN at Ohio University. My son is in 4th grade and at least 25% of the class is on Merit Honor roll (all A's). The teaching and administrative staff are all friendly and very helpful. I found that when my daughter transfered from Alaska, the change went very smoothly and she actually had to 'catch up' because the curriculum was more advanced.

I agree - too much emphasis on sports. Very disappointed all around. When I enrolled my children in both elem. and high school - my oldest wanted to take French - it isn't offered -not enough kids signed up, but they had/have a swimteam of ONE! This districts priorities are not in the right place. Had I known what I know now, we never would have moved to this district.

No funding for gifted programming, no funding for special ed, too much emphasis on sports not enough on education.
