One of the comments below said PT had average state testing scores which is completely false. PT is ranked very high on PSSAs amongst other public schools (top 15%, some years top 10%). Another poor rating came from a parent who complained about the school's guidance counselors not helping their child apply for school/ financial aid/ scholarships. PTHS prepared your child to actually get into a college. Many children across the state are not even eligible to graduate high school and drop out. So I have an issue with your one star rating. One last comment on a ranker before me, an individual conplained about the lack of diversity. Yes, PT is predominately caucasian but that is not the school's fault. The school is public to all PT residents... they're just predominately white. I'm not saying PT is a perfect school district, it definitely has flaws like all schools. However, now that I have had my student teaching in an urban pittsburgh public school, it frustrates me that people have given an above average school such a low rating. I just wish the people who gave one star ratings could visit an inner city school where there are bigger problems that need resolved.

I am a former student and am now a high school chemistry teacher in Eastern PA. I cannot believe the poor ratings for this exceptional school district. The school has repetitively scored high and in the top 100 (out of over 600) public schools. I graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh with a chem major and biology minor. I then did an alternative route program for my teacher certification in secondary education with a science specialization... Anyway, I routinely scored higher than my peers on exams throughout college. I believe PT helped me tremendously and I was given a great education. The teachers are top-notch and prepare students for the future. I wish the students and parents who gave poor reviews could experience a different school district where books and teachers are in high demand. Absolutely absurd comments.

All of the negative reviews that you will find here are from bitter students who did not like the school based on elements like lack of popularity or poor grades, or from parents whose children are doing badly. This is a PHENOMENAL high school that cannot be beat by any other high school in the neighboring districts. They properly prepared me for college and the work force.

Professional, well-educated and caring staff. Thoughtful, well-mannered students. Cutting edge technology. Excellent community support and involvement. World-class education in a small setting. Numerous extra-curricular activities and elective choices. Distinguished arts program. The best overall district in Western PA.

I'm a former student who is currently at a very rigorous college, and I feel my experience at PT prepared me very well academically; in most cases I feel even more prepared than my peers, many of whom attended private high schools. While the music and art instructors are excellent, they recieve a lack of funding from the administration. The high school has three guidance couselors although there are just less than 400 hundred students in each class. Students are assigned to a counselor for all four years. I met with my counselor for the last time at the beginning of my senior year (I went to PT all four years) and she thought I had just transferred there! And she is supposed to be writing my letter of reccomendation for college?

There seems to be no leadership here. The good teachers the district does have either seem to leave or 'burn out ' in a few years. The teachers seem to have generally poor morale and it carries over in there work. Special Ed. seems to be the focus of the administration. Facilities are average at best when compared to districts close to them. PT has a very undeserved high rating. I guess if you tell people a lie long enough, they will eventually believe it.

I cannot believe all the focus given to special needs children in the schools. My son is always waiting for these kids to 'catch on'. And at times he is the one helping them! iam not paying school taxes so my son can twiddle his thumbs waiting all day. Its my son who does very well in school, that is left back! the special needs kids need to be in a 'special needs school'.

As a former student of PT and seeing other school districts now, I believe PT is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Yes, there are bad teachers who don't care (but what district doesn't have those) and focusing on those bad teachers makes everyone overlook the great teachers there are who truly care about the students. Also the extracurriculars at PT are decent and have a lot of student participation which makes them better. The guidance department is below par and don't really help with anything except the one time you meet with them during your freshman year. The schools are pretty old, but I've seen worse. Overall, it's not as bad as people are making it out to be and I feel I got a good education from caring teachers.

As a parent of recent graduate, I was suprised at the lack of support by the guidance department. I guess I expected more personalized advice and support as far as choosing colleges, what scholarships to apply for, what options or avenues make sense based on the student's individual strengths, weaknesses, personality, likes, dislikes ... they basically give every kid a website to do that on, a page of scholarships anyone can apply for and that seemed to be about it. I didn't expect someone to step me through the entire process from applications to financial aid, but I guess I did expect a little more 'guidance'.

As a new parent here I am impressed at the quality of education. The first thing my kids noticed in moving here last year is that kids listen in the classrooms and the teachers spend their time teaching, not disciplining the kids that are disruptive. As a matter of fact, there are few if any disruptions. Huge improvement. I am dissappointed in the fact that the district does not have an orchestra. A school district of this size should look into an orchestra program.

Mediocre schools. No racial or ethnic diversity. No drive or support of academic achievement other than the national honor society. AP classes are not up to par with other school districts and inflated grades by assigning vast amounts of extra credit work are the norm. Standards tests results prove PT is an average school in a state ranking closer to the bottom than the top in student achievement.

This district has no leadership from the superintendent on down , good teachers for the most part but they have huge class sizes and no support from administration . Buildings are run down and curriculum and technology 20 years behind the times .

The choice of classes/extracurricular activities are numerous. The Principal is rarely seen by students unless they are in trouble (i.e. my child has yet to see him). The teacher quality is in between average and great, and they all have various methods of teaching. The parents are never or rarely involved except in sports. The school lacks a good disciplinary action. I would have to say the overall quality of the school would be in the middle for having good teachers a great elective/extracurricular activity program but lacking severely in several other areas.

Overall this is a good school district. The extracurricular support (coaches and staff) is focused on football. A new weight facility was built with taxpayer funding; however, it is primarily available to football. Track, cross country, etc. are not allowed to use the facility.

There is no quality for special ed students, my son is now 18 and just in 11th grade, he has been going to the penn trafford school district for 5 years now and had actualy regressed in his learnning. I have faught for 5 years to get him a better program with this district and they have none, teacher are over welmed and unable to teach students with special needs, every inch you make you get nocked back two. Now I wonder if he will ever be able to even get a job let alone graduate, there is nothing for these kids at this school.

Academics are poor if you have any special needs. Both sons have IEP's and have failed all academic subjects miserably one 2 years in a row. Inclusion is used & the LS teacher helps all students in the classroom so the only individual help they get is 20 minutes per week in the resource room to go over what will be on the test that week which really doesn't matter because they can't read it. meanwhile they're missing out on regular class material. The IEP team refuses to offer anything different to address my children's need's & help them succeed. They took vo-tech away but that was the 1 area of success. My 16 yr old's IEP is for emotional support, does not have a behavior plan even though the IEP says it should, my 15 yr old's IEP is based on an evaluation done from another district in 3rd grade.

Class sizes large (25-30) Teachers excellent in honors/AP. Limited computer/technology. Guidance dept fair. Limited arts & music to traditional choices. Sports limited to traditional choices & fair/teacher coaching staff. Buildings outdated. Very little parental involvement after elementary grades. Poor use of recess time/outdoor opportunities. Feels like a district from the 1960's.

I am a recent graduate of PTHS and I feel as though I got a great education. The teachers there were very well educated and truly cared about helping us not only academically, but socially, athletically, and personally. When I started college, I felt as though PT provided me with a well-rounded education that left me prepared to face higher education.
