We moved to this area not knowing anyone. We placed our child in St. Mike's starting in first grade. He is now in 4th grade. We love the teachers, staff and students at St. Mike's. It is a great school and we are glad we made a good choice for our child.
This is a Catholic School where the focus is on faith as well as academics. Contrary to the review below mine I do beleive that the children are taught diversity. By having all learning levels together the children learn to operate in real life scenarios. Not tracking the children is not St. Mike's specific, it is an an archdiocesean policy. Children that require reading assistance or speech are offered those things through the county. An advanced reading program has been put in place this year. I am blessed with two children who routinely score above average on standardized testing, so special education is not a need I have. The school has a variety of extra cirricular clubs and activities: choir/chours, drama club, lectors club, Reading Olympics, Altar Servers, CYO sports including soccer, track, basebball, softball, and football.
This school is not up to par in introducing students to diversity and a healthy competitive learning environment. The children are homogenized and taught to think only what is taught to them. This school creates what THEY think a student should be and does not let the student be an individual and come to conclusions on their own. I've lost my religion since graduating from St. Mikes. It is only after attending both, catholic and public schooling institutions that i have made my judgments. I was living in a box during catholic school, THEN reality hit me once i left. Paying for teachers who are uncertified and for a 45 minute religion class is ridiculous. If you want your child to possess good values and beliefs, then take responsibility into your own hands and do it.
My child attends this school now and he loves it. Compared to what I have had to pay in Day care the tuition is very reasonable. The teachers are great and very attentive. I like the smaller classes b/c I don t feel like my child will be lost. There does seem to be a high turn around in teachers but like the other parent said they only have that teacher for one year. I hope if you read this you will consider sending your child to this great school.
This is a good school for the 'average' child. If you have a child that is 'below average' or 'above average' programs are limited. There is a high turnaround rate of teachers but since the child only has each teacher for one year, it is not a big deal. Some classes have too many students because there is not enough for another class. Parent involvement keeps this school up and running as well as the CARES progam--very useful. No playground to speak of for the older kids-and there is all the room out back and with the old Conwell now gone. Sports seems to be an important aspect of this school too.
I have had two children graduate from St Mike's and do well in college prep high schools, my third child is in St. Mike's now. While many things have changed in the school over the years one thing that hasn't is what the school can offer their families. We have an extremely active Home & School providing 1-2 low-cost or free family event every month. The volunteer program has almost two hundred parents and grandparents servicing the school every day. The school offers music, gym, a computer lab, research room, science lab, elementary level library and middle school library, nurses every day, academic assistance, clubs, athletics through CYO, tutoring and more.
