Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I have two children at Greenberg -- a 5th grader and a 3rd grader. I can honestly say - that while I still have issues about snack sales at lunch and the lack of free-play recess during the day - my children are strong students and have had really wonderful teachers during their time at Greeneberg. There is definitely a committment to the arts and arts educaton. The music and art teachers are fantastic. The parent coordinator is a real gem. Parent volunteerism has increased and parents can be involved, but you have to create or seek out the opportunities and get involved. It would be nice if Home and School meetings had better attendance and if there were more volunteers at HSA events. But, most importantly, my kids really like going to school and that's the real measure. Greenberg is a safe and nurturing school, and I recommend it very highly.

This is an amazing school and it is primarily children that come from parents who are professionals. And that is what makes a difference at Greenberg. It has a majority career oriented and educated parents so they understand the importance of education for their children. Greenberg is a wonderful school in a Pine Valley neighborhood. There is a real sense of community at this school, which has very high academic achievment, ranking it at the top of Philadelphia elementary and middle schools. I attended this school in its early days and am proud to have my son attend now. My son started attending kindergarten this year and thus far my wife and I have been very impressed by the teachers and the exceptional parent involvement and support for the school.

Joseph Greenberg is an excellent school and it is a great feeder to the magnet High Schools e.g. Central, Masterman, etc. The teachers seem very caring and involved in teaching the students. I feel any child that goes to this school will get a quality education, as well as a diverse exposure to many different ethnic backgrounds. Every time I have tried to communicate with the teachers they have been receptive to my comments and welcome my involvement. My son graduated from Greenberg and Masterman, and got accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Joseph Greenberg was a great MS to help him get accepted. My eldest daughter is currently in 5th grade, and she loves the school. I highly recommend this school and plan to send my youngest daughter here.

I'm a proud parent of three children who attend Greenberg! What a great, positive experience my children are having at such a wonderful educational institution - they love the school. The administration and staff make this school an academic paradise. This school is very academic oriented and encourage my children to be their absolute best. Great teachers (bad ones don't last long) and high standards. Middle School is academically excellent.

This school is unlike your regular public school. My son, who attends Greenberg, is currently in first grade, and barely made it out of kindergarten. He is so stressed out by the work load of homework they give him, and the frequent testing that is almost everyday. I feel as though I am homeschooling my child, because It takes us 3 hours a day to do his homework, which is about 6-7 pages a day. Not your average homework for a first grader.

Excellent school for children in the gifted program. In fact, it's the all-day gifted program that gives this school it's high test scores. A decent school for non-gifted/average children, however, this is one of the worst schools for your child to attend if he/she has any type of learning disability, even a mild learning disability, or even just struggles in a subject area.

Greenberg has really helped my daughter achieve academically and improve her social skills. This is her 3rd year here and we have no complains. The teachers have been great! Unfortunately, it did not go well with my son .he has ADHD and Greenberg does not have the resources to help him, so we had to send him to a different school that did. It s a shame he can t attend his home school. We are really sad about that.

This school is great for helping your child reach their academic goals. The children receive various awards for all of their accomplishments and improvements. This school has a great computer and science programs, and great free after school club programs. Their is about 50% of parent involvement in this school which I believe contributes to a safe environment. There is room for improvement in the library, music, and art programs. Overall this is a wonderful school. I give thanks to all the teachers and staff for their continued efforts of excellence with the students of Greenberg.

I graduated from Greenberg in 2011. I currently attend Archbishop Ryan High School. It is in my opinion the best elementary school throughout the Philadelphia area. The teachers care about the students, and have high expectations for them. Academically, the school is an excellent place for any child. Greenberg not only helped me academically but it helped me in areas such as socially and emotionally. The school has an excellent Mentally Gifted program for high achieving students, and the teachers and staff are great. I couldn't be happier.

My son has attended this school for seven years. I have had opportunity to meet the majority of the staff and can honestly say I have not met one teacher who did not exude the utmost enthusiasm and authentic concern for their student's education. The principal is concerned with students and not PSSA scores. I feel everyone genuinely cares about my child. I highly recommend this school. I will truly miss this school once my son moves on to High School.

The negative review two posts below is obviously completely and utterly biased against Greenberg. Greenberg is a wonderful school with a warm and welcoming community. I am a recent graduate who is attending Penn Charter, in Philadelphia. I was constantly challenged at Greenberg to do my best while still having fun. Greenberg taught me the skills necessary to balance all my interests including sports, community service, work, and friends, along with academics.

There is good parent involvement and the school's location is great. I have a huge concern that the needs of special education students are not being met. If you have a special needs child you may want to consider other schools in Philadelphia.

Compared to many of the schools I've come into contact with, Joseph Greenberg school, is one of the best. That is why we chose to move up to Pine Valley, so that our children could benefit and experience all that the school and its teachers have to offer. My children are doing very well and we are very content and comfortable with the decision we made.

We were previously sending our children to a private Catholic school in Philadelphia, but were unhappy with the facilities, faculty, and overall program despite the tuition levels. Our children were not developing academically and socially as hoped. Since bringing our children to Greenberg School, they have thrived at all levels, quickly developing friendships, receiving tremendous support from all of the faculty and are much happier.

I have been very impressed with Greenberg and what it has done for my grandson, niece and nephew and many other local children. I feel it has a great family atmosphere and encurages family involvement. The success of this school is really a testament to the excellent teachers and administrators who have kept the school on course. The school has a great music program they put on a wonderful concert every year! Everyone is so kind and helpful! It's a fun and safe school and I just love it!

My children have been going to this school since the oldest was in first grade, he is now in 8th, and it is an amazing school. Is it perfect? No, but then again, what school is? My 6th and 8th grader are learning more advanced Science and Math than their high school aged cousins! This school is as good as it gets for our area. If you want to sit back and enjoy the ride think again about enrolling your kids here.

The school is great! Sound basics. Solid discipline. Strong communication. Being a military family, our kids have gone to a couple of different elementary schools. The school offers music, art, PE, computer and science labs as part of the curriculum. My 4th grader just attended an Honor Roll Award Ceremony at the school. The teachers send home progress reports as a way of communicating about your child's progress. The best part of the school is the Instrumental Music/Orchestra/Band program. It gets my children excited about attending school every day.

Greenberg School is a typical example of how a school can make the most of its resources. My daughter who is currently at Princeton, graduated from Greenberg and then was admitted to Central High School. My 14 year old is currently attending Julia R. Masterman High School, and my 11 year old is currently still enrolled at Greenberg. Greenberg has proven to be a more than sufficient launching pad for my two daughters. Greenberg is the launch pad to go anywhere you want to succeed. Staff at Greenberg are wonderful, starting from the first person you run into when go to the school. They care and educate the most precious things in our lives. It's a wonderful place to raise your children. There is a high level of parent involvement in the school.

Joseph Greenberg has dedicated, friendly teachers. There are many fun school events for students and families. Involved parents make it an enriching environment socially and academically. The principal is a very passionate about the kids. She believes in each and every child's potential and makes an effort to get to know each one by name. The school is located in beautiful, well-kept, family oriented neighborhood, parking is not generally an issue.

This is my daughter's first year in public school after our move from the catholic school system. My daughter loves Greenberg and her teachers. After talking with her teachers, I find them to be educated and motivated. My daughter told me her teachers make learning fun. She stated they are strict, however they are not mean. Great School!!

We enrolled our two children into Greenberg and we could not be happier!! If your children fall into the middle of the bell curve then you are in great hands. If your children are self motivated or closely watched over by a parent then they will do well. The teachers care and are for the most part very good. If your children are not good students, or have any learning issues, then they will have a difficult time here. There is an extreme overload of home work, over which the teachers have no control. It is state mandated with very little thought other than high scores for the school which related to funding, however much needed. As far as alternatives go, I can't say that I've found the private schools to be better, and for 10-30 thousand dollars a year, from personal experience, I'd say your money is for the most part wasted.

Very good school. Great parent participation. I love the teachers and the programs at the school. My sons and daughter are happy (K, 3rd, and 4th grades). My kids have gained a tremendous love for reading, writing, and overall learning from Greenberg. I am enjoying getting to know the Indian culture more - the families are lovely.

Greenberg school is not that so great!! Wait until your children get into higher grades then you will see that all this school cares about is what is on paper. For starters the principal ostracizes the young, the secretaries are crude and the teachers are very unstructured. The kids don't come home with textbooks. The turn around time on one assignment such as multiplication is 24 hours and then off to division. I'm glad my child won't be at this school long. Make sure your child is not late because the pencil neck secretary may just start screaming and jumping down your Childs throat. These kids are a nervous wreck. Yea kudos to the area the school is in but what is your child really learning. They think every child is a special need child so they demand you to put your kid on medication so they can get more funding. What a disgrace .

I agree with the school being located in a good area and that is probably the most I will agree with. The teachers are very unstructured and the principal is very unprofessional in nature. Worst school my children has gone to and I am so thrilled to be taken them out. This school cares about funding and what is on paper. My child's education has hit rock bottom. They give just math homework every night. Where are the text books and learning one subject at a time? They give study sheets to have your child practice and then when the test is given they throw off the wall questions into the test that the kids have no clue how to answer. Do not send your child here unless you want a fast paced school that lacks in english, reading, language arts and so forth. If you do have a child that attends be aware of that secretary, she will scream her brains out if your child is one minute late. I had the opportunity to observe that while being ignored for five minutes in that office. These poor children are so nervous. This school definitely needs to be put under a review.

Greenberg is a great school, which is located in Pine Valley, a small, quaint middle-class neighborhood, saturated by mostly single family homes. It s a calm and somewhat secluded neighborhood with safe streets. To date, we are thrilled wit the overall progress that our children have made. Grade K and 1 parents

My daughter has been enrolled at Greenberg since kindergarten. I feel the quality of academic programs depend on the teachers individually. In first grade my daughter was encouraged to stretch her academic level. In second grade she is definitely not challenged enough. The music, sports and other extracurricular programs could be greatly improved for all grades. The parent participation is outstanding at Greenberg. Keep it up parents!

The principal does not know what she is doing. The policies of this school are only an attempt to mask the poor education quality that is provided. My child is in the 2nd grade and I guarantee that he is well behind kids that attend other schools in other districts. The school needs to focus on quality education and it starts from the top, the principal.

I have been a parent at Greenberg for 5 years and it is the 'grand dame' of all public elementary/middle schools in Philadelphia County . We moved to the area so our children could attend this school. The thing about Pine Valley is that it is in one of the wealthiest areas of Philadelphia County . Therefore, a lot of the students here have parents who have poured money into their education including private tutors. There are many school-sponsored extracurricular activities to get involved in as well as a ton of clubs. There is just a certain pride that comes with going to Greenberg that other schools don't have and I am definitely proud to say that My Child Shines at Greenberg!

This school is amazing and if you look at its test scores, it does as well as mostly wealthy schools in the suburbs. My daughter loved being here and had thrived. This school has helped her be accepted in a great private high school on scholarship. Although the homework load was definitely significantly heavy, she didn t seem to mind because she truly loved this school and her teachers made the subject matter fun and as hands on as possible. Many parents complain of the homework load because they find they need to assist their kids or are unable to stay afloat; however, they fail to understand the benefit that is reaped when kids consistently review their subjects.

The teachers at Greenberg are some of the best. Caring, involved and enthusiastic. Exceptional attention is given to the students to ensure they are placed correctly, whether that is advanced or needing special help. Curriculum is enriched with lots of projects that get kids excited about learning, and the HSA sponsors many family events throughout the year without asking for lot of donations or financial support from the students. I only wish there was more focus on physical education.

Greeenberg is a school where the faculty demands student proficiency in the state wide PSSA testing above else. The English program has very little focus on actually writing, and reading. In the 3 years my child attended, she wrote few papers of any substance, and read fewer then 20 middle school level books. In science, material is disorganized, focuses on rote method and no actual teaching of science. In math courses, the focus is on the PSSA testing results, speed of computation, and little time spent on learning real math. History is sparse and too diluted. Home work is excessive, poorly designed, and mostly useless. Scores and grades are paramount in this school. .

This is a small school with dedicated staff. The staff has difficult challenges with language and culture along with the transient nature of the neighborhood. Many students are non-english speaking. It seems like more than the 30% reported. But the administration seems to make every effort to accomodate and educate all children. Based on my child's excitement, the school is good.

Greenberg is all about stress and doing homework of no use. The school mainly focuses on Math and totally ignores other subjects, especially Language Arts. The middle school students are under so much stress and stay up for along time at night, studying for tests. Still, they get a bad grade because the teachers put more things in tests that they never teach. I highly recommend that you do not go to this school.

I have two children enrolled here at this school, it is nice however the academics lack enrichment and some of the teachers aren't passionate about their job. For the most it is a safe environment, the major downside is that the cirriculum lacks rigor, and too often it seems that the principal pretends to address issues but in reality she just protects her staff. She has a nice demeanour and is very present but is not very effective. If a little more accountability is placed on the teachers and some challenge added to academics, Greenberg has the potential to be a great school.

Both of my children have attended Greenberg, and the change that I had noticed is not for the better. The amazing teachers that made this school what it was, are leaving, and the ones taking their place, definitely do not measure up. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good school, but the teachers are what makes the biggest difference!

This school was not only where I began my education, but also where I learned English. I came to America in the middle of Kindergarten and since I did not know the language, I was put into a class with other immigrant children from India. Our teacher was extremely accomodating and understood the varying needs of all students. Our teacher helped us focus on learning and developing without making us feel intimidated or pressured. The teachers I had in the subsequent years, whether for general homeroom, ESL, or art, inspired us to be the best we can, and I, personally, was never discouraged. I loved school, which every elementary and middle school child should and I am extremely grateful to teachers I had while I was at Greenberg. Although many of the teachers have probably changed from eight years ago, I haven't heard any bad things about the school so my opinion remains the same.

This school was great and has the potential to be great. However, I am seeing significant dissatisfaction from teachers, parents and students alike. While some may be due to cuts. Much is due to leadership. I have 2 kids here and have started to look for alternate schooling for next year. Time to move on.

I have 3 children in the school and my oldest has been going to Greenberg for 7 years. I've been very happy with the school. All the teachers are very qualified and experienced. There's a mix of new and old teachers, but I've found them all to be insightful and supportive. And yes there isn't much time for art and music. But I think it's more important to make sure that the kids have a firm foundation on core subjects first. Each of my kids are particularly strong in certain subjects and I have found that their teachers are accordingly adjusting their lesson plans to challenge the students that want more.

My daughter attends the school, and she wants to do so much more, but there are no activites to attend to after school. It's a shame, it's all due to budget cuts, but the school needs the afterschool activites to keep the kids interested.

This is the best pK-8 public school available in the metropolitan Philadelphia area in terms of the sate-wide annual PSSA tests. It did on PSSA tests better than many expensive school districts around Philadelphia in 2011. This school is probably the very reason I still dwell in Philadelphia in order for my kids to attend Greenberg.

Having attended Greenberg as a kid, I had such great memories of this school. Unfortunately, the principal is running the school into the ground. I have no choice but to send my kids to this school. We had a bullying problem last year and since the principal and her staff refused to handle it we went over her head. Now she is taking out her frustration on our 7 year old daughter. Sad when a 7 year old little girl is being bullied by her principal. Is this what our schools have come to?

I have three children in Greenberg and for the most part am very pleased with the school. I do have to agree with the child who spoke about the lunch program which I heard is unedible. Also the lunch staff can be a little more tolerant with the children. As far as academic the school is like no other and i believe my 7th grader will be prepared for high school when he graduates. I think though we need to keep up the work being done so this unique school does not become like some of the public schools in the city.

Academically, Greenberg exceeds almost all of the Philadelphia public, private, and parochial schools. Greenberg competes with the suburban schools with testing scores. Students are ready for high school upon leaving Greenberg. The teachers are challenging with students, yet compassionate. Kids learn in a safe environment, and problems are addressed immediately. My two children attend Greenberg, and another child went through Greenberg and is now an academic scholar in college. Cons: The admin staff lack strong leadership from the principal. No real afterschool or enrichment activities. MG program is political and serves only the lobbyist parents. HSA is clique-ish but they do help the school.

The teaching staff for Greenberg is amazing, and pull miracles out of their pockets daily. However, with the recent addition of a new principal, Greenberg begins to falter. The school cafeteria lunch is extremly distasteful. Some of the lunch helpers are ignorant, and the school itself is dirty. However, school is to become educated, and Greenberg is still top dog in this category. As a matter of fact, I scored almost a perfect score on my PSSAs thanks to my great teachers. In conclusion, Greenberg is a great school for the education, but in five years or so, the school will deteriorate and become another 'school'

I have two children at Greenberg. We have been actively involved in their education for 8 years. I have always found the teaching staff excellent, however, the leadership and support staff is particularly horrible. There is daily confrontational behaviors by those in charge, no conflict resolution efforts between students and quiet pacifying of concerned parents. Things have changed over the years and even those who have stuck it out are deciding to move out of the district. An effective principle would turn the school around.

I had gone to Greenberg from K-8th grade. I am now at Central High school in Phila, PA. Greenberg is a great school but the only thing I did not like was that there were not sport teams, or anything to that extent.
