Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am currently in 7th grade at CCCS. I have been in this school since Kindergarten. I am already starting to be sad that I will need to move on for high school. I have had amazing teachers and support during my years here. I feel lucky to be a part of this school. I hope to come back visit when I move on to high school.

I began my teaching career as a substitute teacher working for the school. Immediately, I was embraced by the administration and faculty. I served as a substitute teacher and eventually landed a fulltime position. The teacher turnover rate is very seldom, so I immediately accepted the position and have never looked back. I have been teaching at CCCS for several years. The administration is beyond supportive and caring. The staff, faculty, parents, and students are like one big happy family. The members of the school encourage parental involvement through yearly events, such as annual Basket Bingo, Penny Party, and holiday and spring concerts. We organize school projects for the students and local community, such as the Philabundance food drive, Red Cross Relief funds, St. Jude Research Hospital, Pennies for Patients Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Alex s Lemonade Stand, and volunteer at our local senior center. All members of the school are active stakeholders that contribute in their very own way.

I have worked at several schools in my teaching career starting in the Harrisburg area and eventually working here in the Philadelphia area. I LOVE IT. I couldn't ask for a more warm and inviting environment. I appreciate being able to have the time and resources to get into the things kinds love most and explore new worlds through the Literature, Math, Science and Social Studies! I think our program is 1st rate! I think the testament for me is the number of students who come back after they graduate and say those two words that help us know we helped them grow into the amazing people we believed them to be! "THANK YOU" is all the reward I need for the hard work. We appreciate the support of students, family, and staff to make this place the special place that it is.

I'm very proud to work at CCCS. The children are a joy to work with. Our school works very hard to instill good citizenship, and it shows when kids walk in my room. Our teachers work together to communicate and create the best possible school experience we can for our students.

My daughter just started at CCCS this year (5th Grade) and wow what a difference already! She has adjusted better and faster than I thought she would. I couldn't be happier with my decision to move her from public to charter and CCCS in particular.

CCCS is an amazing school. OUr children are in 7th and 6th grades and have been in CCCS since Kindergarten. The administration, faculty and staff truly care about the well being of the students. We have never regretted our choice to send our children to this school. We wish that the school had an associated high school and will truly miss the CCCS family when our children move on.

CCCS is fantastic educational institution. Their teachers are high qualified. They have various teaching styles and meet the needs of their students through differentiation. The administration is very approachable and care deeply about the children who attend there. I am proud to be a parent of a CCCS student.

I'm a proud patent of two boys at CCCS. CCCS has excellent teachers and administrative staff who care deeply about the children at the school. There are lots of different ways for parents to get involved in school activities, even for those parents who work full time outside of the home. My kids are getting an excellent education at CCCS and they are at the top of their class academically and socially. I feel blessed to have my kids enrolled in such a great school in the city of Philadelphia.

We have been very fortunate to have found this school for our son. He did not start at CCCS but he transferred there several years ago and I witnessed a different approach to his studies in a very brief time. The teachers sparked a new interest in his academics and as a result he is always brimming with new ideas. We have had discussions with teachers and staff and they are always ready to advise us on matters pertaining to our son. There has never been a time when someone is too busy to respond. During these very difficult times for the school system in Philly, the choice to send our son to CCCS was a most opportune event for our family.

I've been at CCCS for eight years and I've never been unhappy with it. I think it is a safe learning environment and I love it. I know that it is an excellent school and I am a student and I can say that there is really nothing about it that is bad or anything. Every single year I've been there it has gotten better and better and I know it will keep getting better even after I graduate. The teachers and the staff are highly trained and are very capable of teaching the students. I know since it's such a great school that many kids want to go here and I'm very lucky and happy I do.

Cccs is an amazing school! My daughter now going into 2nd grade has excelled in her school work because of the hard work from her teachers and staff. The staff at our school is amazing they are always involved in all aspects of my child. My daughter has struggled with her reading in the past but with the help of her teacher and her teacher telling me how to help my child she is an avid reader. My daughter enjoys going to school and having a wonderful staff to greet us everyday makes it so much more pleasant! I wouldn't have it any other way CCCS is the school for me and the education taught there speaks for itself!! We are blessed to be apart of this community.

CCCS is truly an amazing-breathe-of-fresh-air of a school. Honestly, I couldn't have imagined a better school for my daughter, who has been a student there since kindergarten and is now entering 6th grade. Every staff/faculty member from the Principle to the Teachers Aides go out of their way for each and ever student, as far or as deep as individually required. Their curriculum is outstanding and their teachers are all top notch, they wouldn't have it any other way. They lovingly push every student to be the best them that they can be, and to never settle for less than their best. It is an all around outstanding school and environment for our children.

As a self-described over-protective parent, I could not be more pleased with the fact that my daughter attends CCCS. She started Kindergarten last year after never having gone to even a Pre-K program. The teachers and staff were beyond welcoming and made me feel 100% comfortable with her day-to-day. I've read older reviews that state there is a lack of parental involvement. I could not disagree more. There are plenty of opportunities for parents to participate. As a parent who didn't want to go the Catholic route and was terrified of a city public school, CCCS is absolutely the best of both worlds. The classes are just the right size and the diversity of my daughter's class was amazing. There's only a few weeks left until school starts and she cannot wait!

As I'm about to enter into my Senior year of High School, the only people I can thank are my parents and the amazing staff and teachers of Christopher Columbus Charter School. CCCS really prepared me for my years that I've spent at Central High School. I remember being the only student in my Freshman english class that knew about grammar rules; and, I owe that all to the great teachers that I had during my K-8 years at CCCS. As I go into this next and last year of High School, and even into college, I'll never forget the fundamentals that CCCS has taught me, and not only the scholastic fundamentals, but also the fundamentals of having good citizenship inside and outside the classroom. So, to all the the staff and teachers, thank you.

Christopher Columbus Charter School was an awesome choice in schools for my children. They offer a great education from a faculty that is caring, educated, and most importantly informed. They have a wide variety of sports, instruments, clubs, and after school programs. The teachers are hand picked for each grade. They set a fantastic foundation for my children to work independently. They teach them to be leaders and to be active. The curriculum has prepared my children to score well on their PSSA testing allowing them to get into the best high schools in Philadelphia. I couldn't have made a better decision. The principal wants nothing but the best and does everything in her power to receive whatever it is, she needs for the school. She has only the best interest of the school and children!

My children transferred to CCCS in 5th & 7th grades and I wish I made the choice sooner. My son recently graduated in June 2013 and my daughter is starting 7th grade. I highly recommend CCCS for having excellent teachers, staff and programs that prepare my children for their future.

CCCS is a Fantastic elementary and Middle School. As an alum I can say that this school was the best place my mom could have placed me. CCCS prepared me for high school I went on to Girls High with a 3.7GPA and went to College and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and honors. CCCS put me on the path of success. Such a great school and if I had kids I'd send them there without a doubt in my mind. Fantastic Staff and Faculty.

I am very dissapointed with the lack of parental envolvement as dictated by the school. I was looking foreward volunteering at my daughter's school. She is in kindergarten, and I was looking forward to going on Field Trips and volunteering in the library or at lunch. I was told by her teacher that there isn't a need for parent volunteers at school. I feel robbed and my daughter feels dissapointed, too. I was very active at her pre-school. I am also unsettled that I do not know any of her other teachers. There is no way to meet any of her other teachers. The back to school night in Sept. only envolved meeting my daughter's homeroom teacher. I wouldn't know the other teachers if I tripped over them. The kindergarten school work is very advanced. My daughter is very stressed now. How will she feel by the 8th grade?????

It's definitely not what I expected. I've heard wonderful coments about this school, and I have no complaints about the clean environment, no bullies, but there's not much parent involvement allowed, and if you come from a different background, (specifically Hispanic) they will make you feel worthless. And totally agreed with the past coments about kids with IEP, they just make the work easier for them. I really wanted my kids to finish in one school, but after I've seen and lived with my kids in this school I've had to make a tough decision....

It's hard to get help for children with IEP's. My child is making great grades because they have made all my child's work easier. My question is "Wouldn't it make since to just help my child with their disability, than to make everything easier . I don't seem to be able to get much help. They just want me to say Ok, and go away. The school is clean, there are no bullies. Only friends and family of the admin. is allow to participate in school activities

A great school for children without disabilities. If your child is naturally smart, this is the school for you. Rules are only enforced for select students. Only traditional learning allowed. Not much room for children to explore their individualism. Not much parent involvement allowed, inless you are in the click. Children with disabilities, be prepared to fight for your child's education.

I am a parent of a child in 7th grade who has been at CCCS since kindergarten. This is an excellent school. Academically challenging and disciplined - no nonsense - which is how it should be. I've heard of students that have transferred from other schools (catholic and public) and needed tutoring in order to catch up and stay in their current grade level. This is a wonderful school. I wish it went to 12th grade.

My children have been at CCCS since 1995. I think that the school is excellent. But some of the teacher are not for the children. One teacher will talk about one child to another teacher and that child is label in the school which is not fare. Some teacher need to respect others. What they say and how they say thing are important. Respect children they do have opinion. Some taecher can not come from six grade and teach third grade. Teachers need to take the time and teach, patient is the key word with student .

My DD is in the kindergaten class of 2008-09 :-) When she entered school this past fall she couldn't read one word yet now in just a few short months she is reading with confidence & pride :-) We were so fortunate to have her name picked in the lottery last year, otherwize our special girl would have gone to a poorly rated school in our dist. CCCS is a wonderful school with a loving caring staff, it's a fantastic choice(IMHO) esp if you want that private school feel without paying the private school tuition.

My son has been in this school since kindergarten, he is now in 6th grade. We love this school. I am so grateful he has this opportunity. Yes, they are strict, but in a good way, they care. Any issues over the years, whether it was academic or behavior, the staff handled it in a loving and knowledgable way. I would recommend anyone that can apply here.. do so It is the best move you can make for your child--- what am I going to do when he graduates 8th grade :(

My son recently graduated from CCCS. The first class that went from K-8. So imagine your child being in the same school since kindergarten and not ever having one problem? I love CCCS for the structure they have given him to prepare for life after CCCS. I only wish that Ms D would have made it K-12 so he could stay longer!

My Daughter is 8 yrs old and was diagnosed with ADD, not only the school but the teachers are helping my child in every way possile for her to reach her goal in her academics. I walk in the morning or after school and all the staff at CCCS know each and every child, as the kids approach the staff with a big hello and hug. I have no worries about sending her to school if anything or anyone is going to bother her. I look forward to my 4 year old attending as well. Thank you all for the help and support you have given me and my daughter.

CCCS offers a solid academic program that includes skill development and reinforcement at all grade levels. There are several extracurricular activities for Grades 5 to 8, such as art club, homework club, chess club, student council, etc. The school atmosphere is pleasant, safe and caring. The teachers and parents who are involved at CCCS are caring, enthusiastic and helpful. Students who attend this charter school are very fortunate.

I agree with the September 2005 comments. I agree that a school needs to be strict but I also beleive that the rules should apply to every student in the school including relatives of the principal and teachers. The school has it's cliques and unless you are a member of the 'Premier Clique' your child will be treated differently.

They are strict, but it is in a good way and all of the children benefit from the dicipline. A calendar mark is only intended to keep the parent informed of the student's progress. If they didn't impliment this system, parents wouldn't know what areas their child is having problems with. This school is highly recommended and academically challanging than Performing Arts. You can't compare the two. Christopher Columbus is the Cadillac of schools and Performing Arts is the Chevrolet!

While the academic portion of the school is great, it appears this school has a rigid and strict regime that expects young students to adhere to only one staff direction and after that they recieve numbers and then demerits. Imagine a first grader being told only once to stop talking, once that is supposed to last the entire day, and if they continue to talk and get a number on the behavior chart they get suspended. Do yourself a favor, try Performing Arts Charter School instead.
