This school is known for their special education program- it is EXCELLENT. Their special education teachers, aides, and EVEN the substitutes who help out.
Washington Elementary School is such a positive learning environment for my daughter. In her 3+ years at the school, she has had teachers who are dedicated, cutting edge and up on current trends. When I expressed some concern to her teacher recently about her math assessments, I was contacted by the math support teacher the next day. There seems to be a genuine caring by the teachers for what is best for each student.
I have two children who have gone to school or are currently enrolled in Washington Elementary in Mount Lebanon. It is a fantastic school with very involved and supportive Faculty and Parents. There is a strong emphasis on inclusion with all students and the faculty continues to reinforce this throughout the year. We have many activities throughout the year where the students are not just learning academically, but also learning socially to give back through programs where pajamas are donated to shelters, service projects to support students in Japan, Louisiana, and Haiti and other areas of public service. Our elementary is a warm, exciting, and inviting place for all students.
Honestly I don't know where that parent is coming from who gave it a one star...feels like one of those "my child is awesome why doesn't everyone see that?" parents that I try to stay away from. The (relative) diversity of the students at Washington is one of the best things about this school which is one of seven excellent elementary schools in Mt. Lebanon. It's a nationally recognized blue ribbon school (Lincoln is the only other Mt. Lebanon School to have been awarded with this distinction). The teachers all work very well together and there is a great focus on using technology to differentiate instruction. Their new librarian is FANTASTIC.
At Washington Elementary, you child(ren) has to fit a certain (undeclared) mold even if he/she is the best in his/her class. Though my child had been at the top of his class at Washington Elementary School, my child s teacher had consistently put him/her below the top 25% of the class, instead of the rightful top 5%. However, her (teacher) students in the top 5% look up to my child, including help with challenging schoolwork isn t there something wrong here? Ironic specter!! Like nearly all parents, I know they have their biases in favor of their children. However, the proof became evident when my child led and still continue to lead in his/her in a new school that recognized him/her for settling a record. My child is doing the work of, and helping students of two grades above his/her current class. Washington Elementary may work for some students/parents, but not equally/similarly so for other students/parents. It would be disingenuous for me to recommend Washington Elementary School to my friends, acquaintances, colleagues or neighbors the behavior of certain teachers stifle students bright future.
A wonderful educational experience for our child and us. We moved our child from a private school and were amazed. The school's motto is 'the best education for each child.' Our child was given loads of individual attention from teachers, the guidance counselor, the principal, etc. He was watched and helped to integrate. His primary teacher and her assistant were on top of his transition. The school is immaculate. The principal is a younger, former reading teacher who does what is best for the child not the minimum the state requirements. Teachers respond quickly and by email and phone. There are a few old thinkers but otherwise the teachers are well trained and broad in their teaching methods. A huge negative - 29 kids in one classroom. They totally are prepared for kids with learning disabilities. Better than the two private schools we've had our children in.
This is a tremendous school, well run, and with high quality teachers. Why it ranks lower than others in the Mt.Lebanon district is beyond me other than it attracts a diverse population.
