Are oldest daughter is a 4th grader and has continued to have a very positive and rewarding experience at Park Lawn since her first days of 5K. We've been very happy with each and every teacher she's gotten and most have been excellent. I've had nothing but positive dealings with the principal and her staff and have received prompt responses to any questions I might have. The music and art programs have also been a positive experience for our oldest. We now have our second child there in 5K and have been very pleased with her growth during her first semester of 5K. The teacher's and staff have both contributed to her growth as a student. I would recommend Park Lawn to any family in town without any reservations. I understand that no school will please everyone, but I can say that our experience there continues to be very very positive.
Some excellent teachers. Losing previous principle a big loss. Any concerns to her fall on deaf and combative ears. Some not good teachers. Sadly, this year's had her favorites and would belittle others. I watched my child self concept, excitement for school, and number of friends plummet. Teacher refused offers for help from parents. Child attempt to participate in the limited number of activities ignored and dismissed and denied. Mean bullying groups of children, not seen and ignored on minimally supervised recess. If this is your district, just find out who is a good teachers are and who is not.
As an educator, I find it revolting that this school is supposedly a 'school of excellence'. While there are pockets of brilliance in teaching, there is far too much 'sit and get' learning. Also, departmentalizing 4th through 6th grade absolutely flies in the face of research on the best methods. Just because it is easier for the teacher to prep only one subject, it is definitely not in the best interests of students to switch from teacher to teacher for different subjects. Unfortunately, non -educators think the school is great, just because the school looks like the educational model many parents grew up with and because of the Blue Ribbon of Excellence.
Park Lawn is a very poor school. I removed my children from this school because of the low standards and atmosphere, and lack of interest on the part od upper elementary teachers. There are some very good teachers in the primary program, but they are forced to work in a very unprofessional atmosphere where many of the staff seem to just not to care.
