Hillcrest Middle School is awful. The principal is on autopilot and should have retired yeears ago. In my opinion, the students' test scores are holding the school together. Some of the teachers are resistant to change. If I hear "this is how we've always done it" one more time I'm going to scream. And this is from the young teachers. Some of the policies and procedures are not conducive to middle school students. Example, you cannot take home district test for review of errors, you can't pick up student work until the third day of an absence etc. Hillcrest caterers to the honors tracked student. Thank goodness my child is in advanced classes and in the Beta Club ,however, I'm sure that Hillcrest has many students that are CP. The teachers settle for mediocre. Some do not go above and beyond to help students. With Common Core standards being implemented, the rigor is not apparent. I could give you a gamut of examples, however, my point is be the voice of the underrepresented. My child has one more year and will be fine. But that's not enough. Hillcrest needs to step it up in the 21st Century. I hope Hillcrest Middle is not indicative of what's to come at Hillcrest High.
My child started 6th grade at this school in 2011. She received failing grades in two of her classes and neither one of her teachers even bothered to notify me of her failing grades. I e-mailed her teachers and asked for a call and did not receive any response for 3 days; then I called and the principal and had to leave a message. The principal never called me back but got her teachers to right me back. They did not even give my child a chance to bring up her grades and my child has never received a failing grade up until this point!
My son is in 6th grade. I am so far disappointed with the office staff and teachers. Office staff is not friendly. Teachers allow students to fail and don't bother to talk to them to see why they're failing. They won't even contact the parent to advise them of the student failing. It seems there's no interest in helping students succeed. The principal seems as if it's time to retire but won't.
As a hillcrest student myself, i am envolved in the basketball team and can honastly say that the school is laking in the activities department..Although our school may not have many choices to choose from, the administration is very involved in the students and their well being. Many of the faculty members are very caring, and are heartfull people...Any student capible of saying they went to hillcrest is lucky!
The availability of sports and other extracurricular activities at Hillcrest Middle School is poor in comparison with other local schools who have many more activities for students. Hillcrest Middle School definitely lacks in its offerings to its students when compared to surrounding schools in the district. With some quality instructors and parent resources, I feel there is much that can be improved to provide more activity options for our students.
This is my child's last year at Hillcrest. It has been a good experience. Hillcrest has been a blessing considering we came from a school where the administration was really lousy. The teachers are excellent. Band and art classes are great but the sports department needs some work.
