Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I have two children graduate from Alvin High School. Both of them completed several of the excellent AP courses offered there, so I'm talking about the "smart kid" track. The oldest received a significant scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas (not a bad school) and was well prepared for college. He didn't miss a beat, and was able to hang on to his great scholarship through his freshman year, when many students struggle to maintain the high GPA necessary to keep it. My youngest son is taking even more advantage of the AP and Dual Credit programs. He is already accepted to an honors college at UT/Austin. He has had excellent teachers at the highest levels - AP English, Chemistry, Calculus, and History. He has succeeded (4+) on every AP exam, which is a testament to the level of teaching here. All of this, and he gets to play sports too. Alvin High has been very good to him and to his parents. Kevon Wells was one of those great principals, and I hated to see him get kicked upstairs, but that's life in any institution.

my kids have jus moved here from a provate schol and they LOVE LOVE LOVE it they were easily excepted this is a place were nobody cares what brand you were and what part of town you live in the . The AP program is also excellent! and the coaches are very caring and understanding of there grades i.e they may miss practice for tutoring. i also like how they can not play with out passing the class. the principal is great there and it is well organized for such a huge 5A school

I am currently a senior at AHS. I have been to other Houston area schools and Alvin has some perks. The school clearly has a lot of money which provides teachers with nice new high tech equipment. The school is also very safe compared to other schools I've been to. Sadly getting good grades in the school is a popularity contest with many teachers. Many students receive a very poor education. I personally have learned very little at AHS. The school does have an excellent AP program with the exception of the English program which is a bad joke. The new principle is terrible and the ap's and administrators are not organized or competent. It seems that principles give some kids unfair perks while being absolutely hateful to others for no reason. A large part of the student body does not care even a little about getting an education. Alvin High School is all in all a terrible school that wasted years of my life.

yeah i am a freshman this year and have been here for a semester and i personally think that you parents out there arent getting both sides of the story!! you probably went here but that was a different century! this school is great. they help us when we are struggling and when we ask for their help they do what they can. and yea any school could be better than what it is but this school is amazing. and i like the young teachers! they are better than having old grouchy people... -100% YELLOWJACKET!

It is my son's last year in this High School. He has struggled with teachers that are simply too young & seem to be there only for the paycheck.Coaches in the school main concern is having good players & winning, therefore students may get away with anything.

I pulled my son out of there about 5 months ago. My son is no angel but there is a lot of bad stuff going on there. This is another school that alienates kids that are not into all the all the usual sport cheering and stuff like that. he is graduating this thursday but not from alving high. It did cost to do this but is better than him droppping out. it did get him away from some bad apples

ok, I am currently a sophmore at alvin Highschool. This school is good but yes it could be better. but the main thing is that the students don't show any potential. they dont work or show any respect. At Alvin, there is The Rotc program, atheletics, and Ag I am currently in Ag and rotc, Right now I am struggling cause the teachers wont help students struggling. L

Worse school in the area. My daughter is a sophomore at AHS and we are moving soon due to lack of quality teachers and parental participation. Alvin is a nice, laid back little city but the school system is deplorable.

I am an old student at Alvin High school, and for all of you who say alvin high school is terrible, rethink. first, its alvin, that explains 50% of all negative actions. alvin is a low classed town, and in a low class town you have a low class school. Alvin High school is on top of their priorities, and try and get things done, and teach the students. in order to have a good participating school;teachers ,you have to have good participating students.most of the students at Alvin High school dont put in all the effort they should, its the students not the school, not the teachers, not the ap's but the students, alvin is an out of control town, period.

this school is terrible. i am currently a senior, and honestly i can't wait to get out. while i have no problem with the idea of school, i do have a problem with a school who's main priority is to just get by. yes, the majority of students are disrespectful and obnoxious, but honestly, when kids use colored constuction paper in 11th grade english that is a problem. this year i'm taking dual credit english, i feel so far behind in the class because it's challenging and i haven't been challenged in english since 8th grade(i went to a private school for junior high). there's a kid in the class with me who is completely confused most of the time because of the huge jump between the alvin highschool level and the college level honestly, any school who's regular classes don't come near readying kids for college is not a good school.

This school needs to teach more than just what is in the TAKS, they need to teach skills that we actually need in life. Most of the core teachers think of only their paychecks and attendance. Only the extracurricular teachers seem to care about the student's grades.

I think that one of the best princIples in alvin high school would have to be Mrs Almendariz! She has an excellent choice of words, options and explenations i just want to let her know she is appreciated.......Thats why i rated this school an above average.

I am attending AHS this year and have been dissapointed on few things. It has an excellent Medical Science program in which I am now training to become an EMT because of it. I am the top of my EMT class due to the quality of teaching. My concern with the teachers is that they are only reflecting the students. The students here are out rageously disrespectful. If they would care more I believe the teachers would be superb! The do spend a lot of money on their male dominated sports programs. (The varsity football team lost every game this season)Some of the money could go towards the classes that can't afford a class set of books. There is only a significant level of parent involvement in big programs such as football, drill team and band. Good school, poor students.

Alvin is a rapidly growing town but still keeps a small-town atmosphere intact. The high school is always under construction for the rapid growth of students and is great condition. Alvin High has a few high quality teachers that are very good at their job, but a little more of the teachers are a bit suspect. Overall, the quality of academics at Alvin is mediocre, but is increasing fast. The availability of sports and fine arts has always been growing, with a new fine arts facility, new tennis and basketball courts, an impressive baseball and football fields and a pool. There is a significant amount of parent involvement and care, which is solidly proved by there active involvement in graduation for the seniors, prom, sports activities and school sponsored events.

I know AHS has great teachers and great leadership. Many parents blame the school, I blame the parents and the kids that dont pay attention. Too many parents are absent and not involved with their children.

Alvin high school is great if your child is in extracurricular activities for a boy, but on the girl side they are lacking in many ways. They have brought other couches in that care more about out doing the boys then the girls that are playing for them. The head cough that was in their years ago, was strong but the girls respected her and they all were great. Now its all about the win. The school is lacking in the steps to help students that are college bound and may not be in the top 50 of the class. They need the help to find out where and what they need to do. So consul, get off your bottoms and do your jobs.

All the teachers seem to do is teach TAKS material and only what is in it. They need to expand what they're teaching.

Alvin High School spends more money on the sports that don't win than they do on the acedemics. They never teach my son what he need to succeed in life. All they care about, is if he is there for the TAKS.
