I am absolutely pleased with Mina. My daughter is in 1st grade and I am looking forward to my son starting kindergarten next year. The teachers are very caring and supportive. The teachers I have dealt with encourage parent/sibling interaction. The only thing I am concerned about is the safety of the children as far as visitors but they are switching to the new RAPTOR system after the first of the year, so that will help.
Three of my children went to Kindergarden through fourth grade at Mina Elementary School. I feel the principal needs to create a more positive environment on campus. Many parents and teachers I've spoken with have made similar comments. A visiting relative who happens to hold a Master's degree in Educational Psychology went to the school with me to pick up my children. When we left she immediately remarked that the individual in front of the school doors was very anti-social and needed better people skills. It just happen to be the principal.
I think this school [is] wonderful, I have 2 daughters that attend and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about their teachers and curriculum
I have had three children go through Mina and have always found the teaching staff to be competent and caring. Two of my children have had special help (title V) with minor learning disabilities. Four years ago - I did find that they were slow to recognize these problems, but since then, I have found them very proactive.
Overall, not a bad school. Students that have a more difficult time learning or keeping up are often left behind. Not good for a childs early years. Programs for children needing special help are poor. Some teachers are great with young kids, some are horrible. The best thing going here is they do have a handle on discipline. More than I can say about most Bastrop schools.
The first grade teacher at this school does not appear to be doing a productive job. My child attends this school and does not seem to understand the class lesson. However, when I home school he does pretty well. I think the principal at this school is not very involved and needs to learn people skills.
My two children went to Kindergarden and first grade at Mina. The Kindergarden teacher was new and seemed to have no clue how to teach. I felt my child wasnt learning what she should have been. My first grader was doing ok, but I never saw how good she was doing grade wise until I got a report card. When we moved back to the area for second and third grade I decided to homeschool.
