Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School

This is a great school. My doughter has been for Pre-K and Kinder and I have seen extraordinary advance in her knowledge. She is in Kindergarden and she can read and wire in English and Spanish. She not olnly know to add & subtract, but also find the missing numbers she amazes me every day with the things she learns.

Every year this school is getting better and better (since the new principal came in). While staff doesn't always agree about methods in the school, they always agree about one thing--whatever is best for the kids. While there are some bad aspects of the surrounding community, parents & staff alike try their best to team up and direct the children down the write path. A child will get lectured about something they did wrong by about three to four different staff members (on top of what the parents do) because they all care.

The thing that Zaragoza has going for it is that most of the staff cares about making a difference in these kids lives.

This school unfortunately is directly across the street from a convenience store that sells alcohol and allows others to 'hang out' just outside the store. Very bad visual for the children. On any given school day, there are men hanging out watching the children come and go. The school itself has an adequate faculty, however while watching the classes come together in the gymnasium for assembly, I noticed that each class is full to capacity with only one teacher per class. Most of the time the teachers' gestures, tone and body language indicate they are on the verge of losing it. The children, especially the older ones, seem to be 'calling the shots' for lack of a better phrase. There is a substantial amount of childrens' work product on the walls in the halls, and I really like that. In addition, there are educational works lining the halls also.
