We have been extremely impressed with Lamplighter during our child's first year at the school. Our child has grown and learned so much already, and we love the dedication, enthusiasm and energy of the teachers. We've also enjoyed meeting the other parents, and there are so many activities and events, it is almost overwhelming.

This school is by far the best elementary school in the Dallas area. I am now at hockaday. Lamplighter has prepared me well

I graduated from Lamplighter in 2002. I absolutely LOVED going to school every single day while I attended Lamplighter. I have wonderful memories of my teachers, classmates, and class projects. I have donated to Lamplighter since I graduated and will continue to do so because I am so grateful to have received such a fine education. When I do have children, I would love for them to go here. I have a feeling they would be very happy at this amazing school!

We sent two of our children to LL through first grade. It is a much different school than it once was. Once the two founders suddenly retired, the class size doubled and the experience required of teachers plummeted. We decided to start looking elsewhere when our four-year-old started coming home with stories about his teachers eating Eggo waffles in the classroom while the kids colored--the kids were only there for three hours! Or how hs teacher's feet hurt from "going out" the night before, so it was ok to take them off. Another quote, "I don't talk at school because Miss so--n-so says she can't hear herself think if we talk." It's a $17k a year, three hour a day, daycare. All three of our children are now at another private school, doing well and scoring in the top 1% of standardized tests. We sent our youngest to a church based pre-school (1/4 of the costs) and she is at the same level our other two were at the same age.

This school is the most developmentally appropriate school I know. The focus is on developing the whole child. The school fosters self-expression, creativity, and academic excellence. The curriculum is thoughtful and completely integrated. The environment is warm and nurturing and the kids are great! If you're looking for worksheets and rote memorization, this is not the school for you. If you're looking for an environment that develops critical thinking skills, you've found the right school!

Good school at a very high price. Teachers are very young and inexperienced for the younger children.

Lamplighter gives the children a thirst for knowledge. The teachers are fantastic and really care about the kids. I went to Lamplighter as a child and am happy to discover it is equally good now as it was when I was a student.

Lamplighter is a school which looks at your child as individual and really gets to know your child. Our daughter loves going to Lamplighter.

Lamplighter is a great school for young kids. My child loves to go everday and really enjoys his day. It is a great school for kids who are developmentally right on track and who are self motivated and go along with the class. It is not a good school for kids withy any kind of delays or attentional or sensory challenges. One of my kids has attentional issues would never have been a good fit for this school but the the other child is a good fit. The teachers seem very young and inexperienced but again if the kids they accept generally are above average and easy this is not an issue for the classroom! Again love this school but this is really not a very one school fits all kind of place.

I have sent all of my 3 kids to lamplighter school. it has been a wonderful school where each of our kids have thrived. The small classrooms have been especially important. 2 of my kids have since gone to other schools (Hockaday and St Marks) and they are at the top of their grade in both schools. Lamplighter prepared them to go to both schools. Lamplighter is not a good school, however, for kids with any type of ADD or learning disability.

Lamplighter is a great school for above average children who are good at 'going with the flow'. It is not ideal for children who are gifted and it does not seem to embrace children who might be socially different from the mainstream. Many of the teachers are fairly new and early childhood classes are really large which can work to the detriment of some children. Preschool reputations seem to carry through to 4th grade, but this could be controlled/improved with more professional leadership and true support of the growing child. Non-academic programs are outstanding. The parent community is great.

Lamplighter is one of the most developmentally appropriate schools for young children in the Dallas area. I have two children at LL and cannot imagine them being anywhere else. They love to go to school and they love to learn. Their cooperative learning model and open classrooms are fantastic. I like the fact that my children are learning the basics in a non-competitive environment. There will be plenty of time for competition when they get older. This is not a sit-at-your-desk-and-do-worksheets kind of school. It is very hands on and defintely promotes critical thinking skills.

Lamplighter is an excellent school, but they do not let kids show any sign of competition which I don't like. Kids need competition in there lives.

I sent my child here for every grade they offered. Well, we loved it! It never occured to her to dislike school. She made friends, learned great things each day. The children are privileged with the hands-on activities they do; building bird houses, planting in the garden, bird watching, feeding the animals on the school's farm! All in all, it was a great experience. Helpful teachers, safe and fun environment, music and drama and art and Spanish classes! We still donate to Lamplighter to this day.

This is a wonderful environment for the kids. The classrooom is very open similiar to a montessori enviroment.

My child loves it. The programs seem to be excellent and the teachers are outstanding. Lots of art and music but no emphasis on sports (or seemingly competition in general). Parental involvement doesn't seem to be encouraged.

All things being equal, there is not one other school with the outstanding environmental science program at LL. Our child would not have been exposed to most of the live animal, ecological &/or agricultural experiences. Through our lifestyle he would not have had the continuous cultural/art exposure that they offer. Poetry, opera, completely integrated curriculum - all are heads and shoulders above any other school I've heard of. Please visit this school. It is truly in a category all its' own!

My children attended Lamplighter through first grade. Lamplighter has a great reputation but has undergone much change in leadership over the past 3 years. It isn't the same school it once was. The class sizes, particularly in pk, are much larger than the open classroom facility was designed for. The teacher quality seems to be slipping also. Overall the students are parents are wonderful.

I love Lamplighter. It teaches to the individual level of each child in a TEAM focused curriculum. They tend to work 1 grade above the average, so kids here are Average to Above Average. Great School in a nurturing environment.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
