Ghetto is as ghetto does. Kids either want to learn or they don't want to. Keep up the spirit. Sad when you go to football games you are told to be careful of gang activity.

were* ,*.... Also unlike what somebody else said, most the students, at least while i was at South, weren't at poverty level. My family is upper middle class and lots of the people i knew were from upper middle class families as well.

My oldest son graduated in 2008 from SGHS and my youngest will be a senior next year (2012/2013). I have nothing but great things to say about THE South Garland HS. The new principal is fantastic! He is getting the students and staff excited about SGHS. Both my boys passed all their exit TAKS tests their junior year and my oldest did well at Eastfield and is now working for a fantastic company. One parent said that her daughter had to take a remedial math class when she went to the DCCCD, but that's not that uncommon - no matter what high school you attend. I had to myself and I went to a highly rated high school. The biggest complaint I have is that the parents are not involved. The current PTA president is in name only - she has never once called a single meeting the three years we've been there. There were many when my oldest was there. Most football and Class of meetings are attended by a handful of parents. It's really sad. But, that is not the fault of the school - there are plenty of opportunities for involvement, the parents just choose not to be involved.

My daughter went to South Garland all 4 years. She took four years of high school math --Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. She passed every TAKS test with flying colors. She made Bs in mathematics consistantly throughout all 4 years of high school. Upon enrolling in a Dallas County Community College, she tested low in math and has to now take a non-credit remedial math course. What a waste of time and money! South Garland did not prepare her for college adequately nor did it accomplish to TEACH her math. She "got through" math, but learned very little.

Lack luster. Teachers at open house all seemed to have an apathetic attitude. One seemed apologetic and basically told my wife and I that he never taught the course before and was "working through" the curriculum". We asked three teachers and none of them ever heard of the name of the psychology teacher (even when we provided the surname from our student's schedule), nor were they helpful in locating the teacher. Science teacher rolled her eyes when we mentioned the relatively new course (forensics) and acted like it was a real challenge to teach. All in all, NOT IMPRESSED.

I personally attended SGHS for three years. Some of the extracurricular activities were expensive. The main draw back that I experienced were what I percieved to be structural inequalities, as well as segregation among the student population.

Below standard staff. Unable to deal with anything in a professional fashion. Unwilling to listen to any outside suggestions.

I am a student of South Garland and I have to admit that South Garland isnt all that dandy but the teachers do what they can to help us students as much as they can, even with the kids that dont want to learn. I have seen teachers go beyond their limits to help others out. South Garland to me is a high school I will never forget

South Garland High School is a wonderful school. It is evident that the teachers really do care about the students. And I love the traditions that have been passed down for so many years. Pep rallies are amazing to watch!

I currently attend sghs as a junoir and despite what others say we have a really great school with lots of activites and great teachers. We offer some of the best ap/pre ap classes if i do say so myself...I take them. And our fine arts is one of the best in the district. As an older school we have lots of fun traditions and football season is the best time to come see our school spirit. Whether we win our lose our football games us colonels always got the spirit.

I'm currently attending South, and it's a great school. My teachers whom are Pre-AP/AP teacher are great mentors and they are always willing to help you. The students are the ones that refused to learn. The extracurricular activities are very fun, and enjoyable. It also has a great Debate team, and Mr. Haney is a great debate coach. It also offers a great Cosmetology program. I'm looking forward to graduate in the top 10% from this wonderful school in 2011!

I graduated from South in '04. I must say that anyone who had trouble learning there, did so out of his or her own fault. The teachers there did their best. From what I saw, it was the students themselves who refused to learn or totally skipped school just because they didn't like the 'classroom'. As for myself, I knew how important it was to get my diploma, so I was dedicated to my schoolwork and helped my teachers help me. I'll admit, my worst subject was Algebra - I failed Algebra 2 the first time. But the second time that I took it, with Miss McGee, I passed with a 90 average. Other great teachers there include: Ms Hipp(English), Ms Emmons(Art), Madame Milkowski(French), and Mr Varassi(Science). Also Ms Briggs, the light counselor, is a wonderful person to talk to if you're having trouble with anything.

I am a SGHS grad from 06. In my opinion, the teachers had some difficulty meeting the needs of the average student. The atmosphere at times made learning impossible. I contribute this to the teachers inability, or refusal to provide a conducive learning environment. However, there were a few oustanding teachers, who seem to be disappearing by the minute. As far as parental involvement goes, my parents tried, but were treated as hostiles for expressing the slightest of concerns. I am still amazed that I was able to graduate from this School.

I am one of the Choir Directors at South Garland. I was noticing that the reviews are a little dated, but I wanted to let parents and students know that the Fine Arts are STILL strong here. We are continuing to build on a strong program based on skill and involvement in many extra curricular areas. We perform a Musical every year, which some schools don't. We also pride ourselves on upholding a superior level of excellence when it comes to our End of Year Showboater Big Show. The students fundraise here like I've never seen before. We typically sell over 4,000 poinsettias in order to pay for their Choir Trip (also taken every year). As far as parental involvement, I have a solid Booster Club who will do anything to help our less fortunate kids be successful. We offer Senior and Private Lesson scholarships, and more. I love this school!

South Garland is an excellent school with many great extracurricular activities. We have an amzing Fine Arts Program with a very well known choir, which I am a member of. We also have great teachers who will do anything to help a child. AS for the parent involvement, I belive it is excellent. My mother in the president of PTA and they are always doing something for us. As well as the booster club for every organization. As for the poverty, maybe being in all AP classes shelters me from that. I had no idea there was any at all. South Garland is an excellent school.

In response to Steven Freemans post I would like to clear up that most students at S. Garland do not come from poverty, in fact there are many wealthy families whose children attend this school from the Eastern Hills C.C. area. As for gangs they are not much more of a problem here than they are elsewhere in suburban schools. I attended South and graduated there in 2003 and overall had a great experience there. Most extracirricular activities are good and the fine arts program is top quality with an outstanding choir and rebuilding band program.

The kids that go to this highschool are trying but most of these kids come from poverty and are use to the hard life. There are gangs and heavy drug relations. But it's the best these kids have known.

This school has a great tradition and excels in creating a diverse learning environment. The band program is rebuilding and balanced and fun. The teachers in the honors classes are great and challenging to the students. It is a school that has high achievers and those that don't care. But that is life. This school has a fanatastic fine arts department and parent involvement is stellar.

If you would like your child to learn uniformity then this would be the perfect place for them. Stepford Hgh is what it should be called.
