Helms is one of the smaller schools in at the area. My daughter attends the spanish emersion program. We speak absolutely no spanish at home, but that has not been an issue. The new principle is great. Helms has a very loving and caring atmosphere. All the teachers and admins know the kids names. My daughter has learned so much since she started!

This school is a study in potential. It has a more nurturing environment than other elementary schools that attracted me initially. They have a good amount of highly educated and prepared teachers. What is lacking is organization. Parents are not communicated with in a timely fashion. HISD keeps adding to the burdens of everyday administration taking focus away from providing the best education and teacher coalition. The students though do come home speaking, reading, and writing in two languages at a young age while still finding time for math and science, so the program I have a lot of faith in. Other HISD elementary schools in our area seem to be able to present a more communicative, peaceful environment and don't see to be playing "catch up" constantly.

I love Helms. This is my daughter s 4th year there & all I can say are positive things. My child perform everything thing a normal child would at this age, in two languages, in some areas, more. It impressed me that her teachers began helping her in problem areas as a preventative measure. Teachers didn t wait for the problem to persist. No, there aren t extra curricular activities; what elementary has them? Helms goal is to educate the whole child. This includes concentrating on helping students succeed in the three R s, science and social studies well as. At the same time, Helms educates its parents so that he/she can help his/her student as well. It is unrealistic to want Helms to participate in EVERYTHING and still keep the same level of excellence in learning. Helms parents are involved. There are different levels of involvement, but the opportunity is there.

Our school is like a family. They are very concerned about our children both in the classroom and out. We have a great PTA that supports the school. The Dual Language program is excellent. It is exactly what our children are in need of in this day and age - Spanish fluency. I considered moving my child to another school because she is sometimes resistant to the Spanish, however, I really think that the benefit of becoming fluent in Spanish outweighs the resistance. The environment of the school as a whole really keeps us going back every year.

The dual-language program is excellent. My son started kindergarten knowing uno, dos, tres and hola, and now, at the beginning of first grade, he can read and write Spanish, and converses with his teacher and classmates in Spanish. I love that my son will be bilingual and that he's learning to value other cultures. The students also have ancillary classes in art, music, PE and science.

This wonderful school is a historic landmark in the Heights area of Houston. Children are loved here and also receive an outstanding dual-language immersion (Spanish/English) language education complemented with an exceptional Science/Wetlands teacher.

This dual-language school is in theory a model program but in reality lacks the academic rigor that most parents desire. It almost seems that they spend too much time spreading the 'word' and less time heeding it.

BASIC

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
