Alright, yes, Lanier isn't a PERFECT school, but it is definitely an amazing one (yes, I am a former student at Lanier (and I'm moving on to Bellaire HS)). My teachers throughout the years have been kind and very good at teaching (besides my 6th grade science teacher and 7th grade math teacher (who I think taught elementary school before he taught 7th grade), and the administration is very helpful with any problems you have (schedule issues, bullying (if any), etc.). There are also foreign languages that challenge the students as much as their core classes do, and electives that are very enjoyable. Now, you may be wondering why I gave this school 4 stars when this looks like a 5-star review. Well, to be honest, I feel a little bad for the students at Lanier now because they are doing some changes (for example, merging vanguard and non-vanguard students into the same cluster). It feels a little pointless and that's what made me remove the 5th star. In conclusion, I recommend this school for any student who wants to be challenged in the Vanguard program, or any future middle-schooler who wants to be challenged in general. Go Purple Pups!

I agree with many of the reviews. Lanier is not for everyone. This is an excellent public school for G/T kids in a large, public school district. No school gets everything right all the time, but if you are evaluating middle schools, I would encourage you to tour Lanier. There is no hard-sell, and I don't think anyone affiliated with the school would encourage you to choose Lanier if it isn't the right choice for your student(s). Our family has been able to appreciate the overwhelming balance of positives at Lanier: diversity, evenly-enforced disciplinary policy, professional leadership, differentiated instruction in an IB framework (this alone has been invaluable), and a wonderful community of students, parents, administrators and teachers. Are there teachers that could improve? Yes. But if you can cite a school that rates an all-star staff by all their students, I would say that you have found Utopia. If your kids are interested in challenging themselves in any number of areas, I think Lanier may be a really terrific option for them.

I am a student at Lanier and I recognize due to the fact that I am not white my voice probably means nothing but I just don't care anymore. The teachers are terrible and dont teach the only way to get good grades for high school is by knowing the information prior to entering the school. It really hurts to see really smart kids failing because the teachers can't teach at all.I have been called many racial slurs by students in Lanier and when you report to administration they completely ignore u.There is no academic rigor only academic stupidity. After going to Lanier I have become a little racist and an egotistical idiot.I have all A's and im in the Vanguard program, trust me it isnt a a challenge (Ib algebra).Pup Pride is really white pride.I hate this school and cant wait to leave.

I would advise any parents with talented kids NOT send them to this school. The principle is very unprofessional and teachers are very self-centered. Their stupidity will easily ruin your talented kids.

I would not at all recommend this school to anyone. My child is gifted artistically and excels in a particular artistic talent, but that was not encouraged at all at this school or the director of the program. The 6th grade Science teacher did nothing but taunt and berate my child, who did need help academically. The principal was standoffish and rude when I tried to speak to her about issues he was having. I felt very alone and isolated a not so traditional family, even though this school is in the middle of Montrose, one of the most diverse, supposed open minded communities in Houston. I was so happy to get my child out of this school...

Lanier has been a fabulous school for my 8th grader. We have seen her 'grow up' here and develop skills, intellect and confidence. It may not be suited to every child. For kids who are motivated and bright this is a great school. The best things is that each teacher has an individual style which they are free to express. Teachers here have low turnover and like to stay because they are allowed by the administration to bring their own persona to the teaching. This is great for the students who get to interact with valued and respected teachers.

children to spread lies about other children and taunt students who partake in an incident which got them in trouble with a non minority and let the non minority get off scott free. They state that they have a 0 tolerance for hate and that is true if you and your child were born full-blown white. If not-will be overly punished to make an example of and taunted on top of it by the administration. This is not a school that I would recommend to any student who is not white and who does not kiss up to the administration. They do not create a safe environment for all students nor protect them and encourage all teachers, faculty and students to promote peace instead of hate. I give this school 5 thumbs down if you are concerned about and fair, and safe learning environment. There are lots of other middle schools who actually care about the well being of all of their students and this is not one of them.

I am a recent grad from Lanier Middle School and I am currently attending Debakey HSHP. My time at Lanier was a wonderful experience, meeting great people and having awesome teachers. It really prepared me for the hardships of high school and my transition from Lanier to Debakey was almost effortless! The leadership program is great, and will help your child in the course of his/her life. Go purple pups!!

I have been SO DISAPPOINTED with Lanier after researching so much & deciding (according to ratings & test scores) to send my son there. He just finished his 2nd yr there & we are getting out for good! This school does NOT care about teaching your kids. They just care about getting passing grades to make themselves look good as a whole! We worked so hard to teach good ideals & hard work ethic to our child & this school just wiped all of that out of him by giving INFINITE number of chances to make up homework, redo tests, hand in projects weeks after they were due. Even when we requested they not give that type of treatment to our child, they still did it. One teacher told us our child "talks too much & doesnt do his work, but all in all he is not a bad student. Your son is very good-looking & that will get him far in life." WHAT???!!!! And that's only one of the ridiculous responses we received when trying to stay involved in our child's academic life & be supportive of his future. DONT send your kids here if you care about them growing up with good values & work ethic

My daughter will be leaving Lanier this year, she is in 8th grade, and I must say it has been a great ride. The curriculum is rigorous and there are such great extra curricular activities to keep the students motivated to do well. I feel Lanier has prepared my daughter for many years ahead of studying, discipline and hard work necessary in High School and College. There were late nights, tears and exhaustion but now my daughter is breezing by in knowing what kind of work to deliver, expextations to meet and responsibilities to fulfill. We were lucky to be accepted into the program!

I have a 24 year old son who went through the vanguard program many years ago and currently have a 12 year old in the 6th grade vanguard program...I am finding that although the there are many perks (ie, ethnic diversity, good fine arts programs, many athletic opportunities, lots of extracurricular opportunities, minimal discipline issues and great parent involvement) the most important aspect (academics) seems to just be alot, alot, alot of work. Not necessarily advanced, higher thinking or challenging work...simply more regular leveled work. My daughter is telling me that the only class she feels might be at the vanguard level is math. I am also finding that several teachers give out alot of regular leveled work and yet sometimes themselves fall short of grading or giving proper preparation and proper credit for what is assigned. But this one thing is true...the reputation for being a top school filled with many top students is solid and that carries alot of value all by itself...plus my daughter loves it!

As a student at Lanier Middle School, I can tell you, this is the best school in Texas. If you want proof, just walk in the door; we have rows and rows of thousands of trophies, we continuously earn more every year. Our sports teams are amazing, our 8 time 1st place National debate team, and our fine arts programs make this school great. The competitive nature is very tough, and many students just can't go through with it. If your child is "fragile" send them to T.H Rogers.

I am currently an 8th grade student at Lanier. I am in the vanguard program and i think that Lanier is a great school. Next year I am going to carnegie and i feel Lanier has prepared me well. In sixth grade i was in cluster b and i learned alot. Seventh grade was harder than 6th because we had lonestar which was a very stressful project. However i learned a lot from it. I have to say 8th grade is my hardest year. I am in cluster c this year. 8th grade is more rigorous in academics but it prepares you for high school well. The teachers i have had are excellent and creative.

I think Lanier is an excellent school, and everything that everyone else says about it, but it was not the right fit for my daughter. She qualified for the Vanguard program but did not enjoy the competitiveness and felt overwhelmed with pressure and a lot of homework. Her health (mental and physical) suffered. Her core teachers were willing (a couple of them I would even describe as eager) to help her succeed but she just never felt really 'safe' or happy there. My daughter is quiet, completely non-competitive, and tends to freeze under pressure, so this school did not meet her needs emotionally which resulted in less than desired academic results. However, her closest friends absolutely thrived in the same environment.

This school is extremely good academically, but it stressed me out. There are very strict rules and guidelines that have severe punishments, high expectations, and competition. If you are in the Vanguard program, the kids tend to compare scores. One time, a kid looked over at my paper which had a 'B'. She said, 'Ooh, sorry. Better luck next time.' As you can imagine, this discouraged me quite a bit. I'm not very good at coping with stress, and the atmosphere there had a lot of tension. However, most of my friends loved the school, and the challenge and competition was good for them. They learned more, enjoyed the benefits of the debate team (which is more than just debate, it also includes other communication activities), and made good friends. It depends on the kind of person you are.

Ok Lanier is the best. It has outstanding teachers that work so hard, and they really want everyone to learn as much as possible. The teacher at your own pase. I know it had a run in with a 'drug problem' but so what every middle and high school have stuff that goes on like that they are safe not the safest but its safe.

Lanier Middle School is an excellent school. While there are some disciplinary and administrative issues, no school is perfect, and Lanier comes close. The teachers are helpful and interesting. However, the workshop program employed for English classes is not always sufficient. The highlight of this school is definitely it's debate team, which I participated in during 6th-8th grade. Debate really teaches students how to communicate while making great friends and having great times at tournaments. Overall, Lanier is wonderful.

There was a serious safety issue last year, with drugs, so I have to say that the safety is not up to par. But the dance program, as well as the Vanguard programs are very good! Go Pups!

I only just left Lanier this year, and am going into High School in the fall. My opinions are rather mixed. I was in the Vagard program in seventh and eigth grade, but the 'normal' program in sixth, and I have to say that the normal classes are hideous. It's not uncommon for the teacher to quite literally give the students an assignment in the form of a worksheet, and then sit back for the rest of the class, letting the class get as unruly as possible. While the discipline has been quite good, there have been cases when students would shove and punch each other two feet away from a teacher. The Vangard program, however, has much better teachers and students. With the large amound of students, however, even the best teachers get very disorginized. I do think it is a fairly good school--IF you are in the Vangard program.

I am now entering the eighth grade at Lanier and I love Lanier! My favorite part has been the debate team who has just won it's sixth national win. Its a great experience. I also recomend the Model United Nations team as well. The teachers are all very involved with the extracurricular programs, as well as helping parents and students be on the same level. It is a great school.

I absolutely love this school! I am currently an eighth grader here and I would recommend attending this school if you or your child would like going to school with the top students in the city. It is sad that next year the school will be converting to all-lottery admissions, but I hope that this won't affect the school too badly.

This is a good school. I am a student there, and i'm really happy. There are great fine arts programs, if one chooses to pursue t. Not much required fine arts. The Drill Team (which I am on) is alot of fun. THe acedimics are good. I dont like the fact that you are forced to have Speech and Debate, which has a pretty nice teacher, but a little boring, and the program is to short, if they choose Fine Arts Rotation. I really like the campus and the entire school! Go Pups

My son attended Lanier for his 6th and 8th grade year and was very unhappy. The principal is new and came to Lanier in his first year there. She has implemented many rules that have taken a great amount of livelihood away from the children, and not offering anything in its place. The administration was not very good at following up when you have concerns and gave sporadic discipline. The teachers had good ideas academically, but were somewhat poor at getting those ideas to the students. They did not have the backing from the principal that would have made them successful. The sports, cheer squad, and band are excellent. Mr. Montgomery, the band teacher, is simply wonderful. He is one who truly cares for his students and their leaning is proof. Coach Kunz is very good and contacts parents as needed. I hope this review of Lanier helps. Thank you.

Lanier Middle School has to be the best school in houston, because of it's diversity in classes and extracurricular activities. I strongly advise you to join the Lanier Debate Team, as the experience was one that changed my life and the lives of countless others. Also, the debate program has been something that sets Lanier apart from all other schools because this debate team has been the national champion team for five years running now.

Lanier is a very nice public middle school in inner city houston. It is mainly vanguard (GT) and you must test into the program to be admitted. You need to contact the school's magnet coordinator for information. The academic program is not structured so you have to be prepared for that, but they do interesting things that I feel the kids remember. The extra curricular choices are great and thier debate team is wonderful and a lot of fun.

Lanier middle school is a high profile school recognized as the top public middle school in houston's below average school district. IT is recognized as such because of its excellent GT progrmam which fully challenges talented students. IT has a wealth of extra cirricular programs available for those interested including its national champion debate team , a drama club basketball team geography club and a dozen or so other things. IT is overall the best houstonian public school and performs exceedingly well on state exams as a whole with all students high in the percentile rankings Its teachers always willingly cooperate with parents if need be, with a high degree of politeness

Lanier is a very diverse inner city school with exceptional teachers and administration. The theme of the administration is 'if a child is not succeeding then it is the system that is failing not the child'. Lanier has won many accolades but does not choose to rest on its laurels but is constantly looking at ways to improve the way it enables children to learn. The learning environment is the key for Lanier because they know not all children function well in the same environment.

Our child is finishing her 3rd year at Lanier, and I cannot imagine a better middle school, period. The vast majority of the teachers are caring, challenge their students, and have high expectations of them. The pre-IB format, combined with the G/T program, gives the students a rigorous cirriculum without a bunch of needless 'busy work'. we feel our student will be well-prepared for advanced courses in high school. The main extracurricular activities our student has participated in are Speech & Debate (tops in state), orchestra, and track. The orchestra is wonderful, go see a concert, they had more Region IX members than any other middle school. No school is perfect, but this one comes close. If there is some kind of conflict, there is a dedicated and sincere effort made to resolve it.

There is a balance attempted at keeping academically postive teachers, meaning they have teachers that can teach academically advanced classes without boring the kids to death. Arts, sports and extracurricular activity is there and most are very successful due to the teachers involvement and support. However, smaller programs have to have strong student/parent drive to be successful. Parents input and involvement is strong and heard by the administration, however, the school manages to maintain control, this is not a parent lead school so fairness can prevail. They truly have some outstanding teachers and staff there that makes this school outstanding.
