The sullen, depressed boy we brought to Crossroads School at the beginning of the 3rd grade has made monumental progress academically, emotionally and socially in his time there. When he was evaluated for learning differences at the beginning of the 3rd grade the assessment was depressing. The doctor told us as parents not to expect that he would ever read on grade level or write with any clarity. Math scores were very low. Crossroads School totally changed our outlook. They helped our son to achieve his full potential. This year I got regular updates from him on the books he read in class. He likes to write book reports. Not only has his writing improved, but he has a newfound love of math, especially algebra. He is so confident in his math skills that he told me high school algebra would be No problem . My son just graduated from the 8th grade with A's and B's and got accepted to a large private high school. He now talks about going to college and studying engineering and math. This school has a wonderful program and excellent teachers. I highly recommend this school for kids with ADHD, Dyslexia, Social issues and other learning differences.
Perhaps very good for certain children who are responsive to their "method," yet as a former parent, I would never had sent my daughter to this school, knowing that they literally group the children together, as all "special needs children," and at meetings called my child a behavioral problem. Since we left this school 1 1/2 yeas ago, she is doing so well in a mainstreamed environment, yet was doing horribly at Crossroads. There was never any curiosity on their part as to why she was not responding, doing well, or suddenly having behavioral problems. Just be careful, and interview in DETAIL, observe the classes, and ask as many question with guidance as you can think of, before you send your child to this school. As I said, very good for some children, but not all.
This school provides individualized curriculum and teaching for kids with learning differences. The teachers and staff are experts in learning and attention issues. My son has attended the school from 3rd grade to 8th grade. He has gained in self esteem, social skills, self advocacy skills and academic success.
Crossroads School has given my son the tools to succeed in school and we are so grateful.
As a parent, you want the best for your child - and it is a huge challenge when your child has "different" learning needs. Traditional school settings could not accommodate and other private schools could not understand how to help my child succeed. Then we found Crossroads...and it has made all of the difference, not just in providing a challenging academic environment, but with teachers, staff and leadership that help students learn social, organizational, and life skills to help them transition to traditional schools when they are ready. Teachers know each student, and how to customize a learning approach that works for each student. The committment of the teachers, staff and director are inspirational. The school is small, about 70 students, and private - so all fundraising is done by the staff and parents - which we happily do, since there is no other school in the city like Crossroads. At the end of the day, my child is happy, has more self-confidence and is better prepared to meet the challenges ahead. At Crossroads they are "Proud of Our Differences"...and that, in turn, makes all of the difference!
We moved our son to Crossroads a few months into 6th grade after years of being told "it's just a boy." When we finally diagnosed his dyslexia and dysgraphia, the psychologist advised us to move him as soon as possible, because they just wouldn't help him in public school. From the first day he visited, he loved it, and he never wants to go anywhere else. The teachers are amazing, the staff is great, and the kids help each other out and support each other. Besides remediation for the dyslexia, he can accelerate in those areas that he needs to as he is also gifted in math and science. There are only a few schools like this in the United States, and I feel fortunate to have found one here. Crossroads is the best decision we ever made for our son, and up to this point we were die-hard public school fans.
This school is a hidden gem; I wouldn't have known it existed if I hadn't been referred by another highly reputable private school also speciales in teaching children with learning differences. My son is now a 4th year student (08-09) and through a combination of Crossroads School, its director, and dedicated teachers, along with two local therapists, my son has made a miraculous turn around this year. Through our 7-year journey of seeking answers, we have finally found a unique combination of help for my son who is Dyslexic, Dysgraphic and has a processing deficiency, I could not be happier with this great school, and more importantly, my son LIKES Crossroads. He feels safe, and is academically and emotionally supported. He went from being shunned by his friends in 2nd Gr. public school to being (in his words) 'one of the popular kids.' I highly recommend Crossroads School.
Our son had problems in public middle school. He was in the Gifted & Talented Program and would not do his homework and almost flunked 6th grade. He tested well and thought he could get by. Our psychologist recommended Crossroads School because they could give him special attention. Our son has ADHD but we don't allow that as an excuse. We sent him to Crossroads for 7th grade. At first he went back to his old habits. We had meetings with the director and teachers and worked out a plan and he finally turned himself around. From February on he made all A's. 8th grade has started well. Crossroads teachers work very close with each student and send home a report daily on each class. Parents are required to sign the reports everyday. The school teaches students organization, responsibility, and consequences besides school work. They build self esteem. They are great!
