As with any school, it depends on the area. We loved Mayde Creek, the teachers, volunteers and staff were awesome. My children attended for 4 years and we had the most awesome teachers. Everyone seemed to love their job and the PTA concentrate on raising money to get items for the teachers and students all year long. The Teachers had phones in their rooms -Wireless and you could call them anytime and leave messages. They would always return calls. I never had a problem getting a meeting with any staff member. Very diverse, fun and safe school. I can not tell you about other Katy Schools other than I have heard nothing but great things from Nottingham Elementary, George Bush, Exley, Kilpatrick and Rylander.
My kids are and have been at Pattison. The teachers have all been very good, concerned and caring. I think it is more important that if you plan on staying long term, choose your high schools since that really sets the stage for their future. I think Taylor and Seven Lakes are the best.27793
Our children attend Rylander, which is great. I've also heard great things about Griffin, Wood Creek, Nottingham, Exley, Creech and Alexander. Griffin and Alexander currently have the strongest GT focus, but I expect Stanley to come to that level as well (they are new, so it takes time.) I'd say the thing that makes a school great is the level of parental involvement. All our teachers are great, but they can't do what the parents won't support. What takes our schools from good to great is the level of community involvement and parents who expect the best from their kids instead of using the school as a babysitter.27792
Will be moving to Katy ISD in 2011. What is up with Fielder? Over the last 3 years, the low income percentage has gone from 7% to 30%. Where are these low income childrens coming from? Are there new apartments up in the zone?27791
Fielder now has a 2-way immersion program (English/Spanish) where children are educated in both English and Spanish. I've heard good things about the program, but it naturally brings additional ESOL students to Fielder, which changes the demographics. I don't know how this has affected the rating or TAKS scores since my children attend another school, but you can look these up at the TEA website. There is ONE new apartment complex, but it's not low-income. The residential areas are reasonably affluent (mostly Cinco Ranch.)27790
Regarding the english/spanish immersion program..that makes sense now. So, do the kids involved in this program have to live in the zoned area? or are they exempt and bused in from other areas? I think I still like Williams Elementary better at this point, but Fielder is a close second.27789
There are only a handful of schools in the district with the 2-way immersion program. Kids are bused in from other areas. There is NO low-income housing zoned to Fielder (or Williams, Rylander, Alexander, Stanley, Holland, Griffin...) You get the idea. :-)27788
